Well. I don't even know anymore. It kind of... Changed a bit. It needs more, but I'm having a hard time making a dark ambient pad. Actually, I might be able to take a normal pad I make and use really low notes... Hm... Why didn't I think of that before? I'll try it later, I guess.

Also, shit mixing.

This would be good if it were mixed better. Right now it sounds pretty terrible, in my honest opinion. Also, add some reverb to the snare, or vary the snares a lot (or both).

How is it so far?

Also, I have a question. How do you make a sub wobble? I tried using the volume/amp here but it's not really hearable in the full mix, or at least, I don't think.

You need to add a progression in there. My favorite type of dubstep song is the kind that has relaxing high-mids for progression on top of a deep sub bass, like this:

Sounds like that's what you're going for. If so, definitely add more melodic synths.

Totally agree. This is just the barebones of the track that I whipped up in like not even an hour and a half. I think I'll make the synth melodies very dissonant because of the dark theme of my track. The tone is supposed to be unnervingly creepy; an abandoned (probably pretty damn haunted) hospital.

Wow. Your clip sounds a lot better on earbuds for some reason than on my stereo system (which is what I usually use with my computer). Do you use earbuds when you make music? Because that isn't good. You need a subwoofer (and decent sound quality) to mix it accurately.

That song, by the way, is made by the guy in my profile picture. He's cool.

No, but I am mixing with on ear headphones for this song (Bose OE2s), since I don't have a functional sub. :(

But the rest of the song sounds fine on my Altec Lansings. I just can't hear the sub with those.

Oh... That's a problem.
Try to get a sub when you can.

Erm. Mixing from a single audio file? I don't think I've ever heard that before... I would expect you to need to project file (assuming you use FL) so you could mix the instruments individually. I have never heard of someone mixing something from a single audio file, though... Mastering, yeah... But mixing?

Idunno. Also, if I need you to mix it, I might ask. I have a problem with asking other people to do stuff for me, or spend money on me, or anything like that, because I feel like I NEED to give something in return, even if people tell me not to. I don't know. I'm just weird like that I guess I don't know ugh maybe

I don't know my way around FL very well, but I could probably manage to mix it decently. If you want me to do anything to it, just send the project, but the reason I didn't suggest this is because you'd have to include all the samples and, if you make music anything like I do, you have a metric fuckton of drum samples that would take hours to compile. And I assumed you already had mixed the various instruments, but just borked the mastering somewhere.

In return you could do some sound effects if you know how to make them. I always need some nice sweeps, since I'm absolutely terrible at sound design. Or you could just give me advice on cool tricks you know.

I had mixed the instruments a bit, but it's pretty terrible mixed, as we can all hear. I never master a song until it's completely done, so I couldn't have "borked" it in any way, yet.

I'll think about it. Who knows... Maybe some mixing miracle will happen when I finish the song, and I won't need any help!

hahahah like that would ever happen

...you can make a good song (that sounds good on speakers) with earbuds just fine. You don't need a sub so long as you have decent earbuds.

Anyway, I'm not sure my song is 'dark' enough. It's got a bunch of mid-high pads with some weird filters and semi-unusual LFO times and sweeping and stuff. The 'drop' adds another pad and a nice sub following the new pad. Even if I don't use it for this, I'm quite proud of it. I guess I'd call it 'swooshy'. I'll post a dropbox thing if I can get on my computer at the airport tomorrow

I don't remember anybody saying this album has to be dark...

Unless you're trying to make it dark. If you're trying to make it dark and it's not dark, then the track is not dark enough.

Yeah and just so you all know it doesn't have to just be dark spooky dubstep, there are a royal shit-ton(Technical term) of styles of dubstep out there and it would be awesome if a couple sweet feel good tracks get produced. Just remember to stay away from ear splitting mid-range stuff, because bass.

If you wanna make a dark track by all means do it! ^^ As long as it's in that old school/real dubstep feel.

I hate how people think classic dubstep is just Skream. Skream and Kryptic Minds are like the Skrillex mainstream artists of classic dubstep. People aren't hipster enough.

Well, I was gonna post my current near-finished WIP today, but the hotel/apartment thing I'm in doesn't have wifi. I'm currently using the australian parliament house's wifi :3

But yeah, it's nearly done. I just wanna run it by some other producers before I finalize anything

Wow, I haven't even worked on my track for a long while, props! I'm to busy with my rainbow & rooted track xD lol It's hard to get into a good dubstep mood after working on a hip hop track xD or at least I find it difficult. And the Aussie Parliament House? That's awesome.

I HAZ INTERNETS NAO AND I CAN POSTS MAH SONG!
It's a WIP, so nothing is finalized (obviously). Any and all constructive criticism would be great!
(It's in mp3 form because WAV takes forever to upload :3)
https://dl.dropbox.com/s/f58kznqqwwrc78 ... 1.mp3?dl=1

One thing I'm not sure about is the snare/clap. The snare seems a bit too snappy for this track, so I may change it.

I like the feel of this! Although I think it needs about 20% more bass. Some reverb on the snare would sound wonderful as well!
