MLR Album Event: The EDM Orchestra

Postby NegaNote » 05 Sep 2012 15:17

Hello, MLR. I've been thinking of a type of album, that I really haven't seen much of an idea before.

The idea is that the songs in the album are a mix of EDM and classical progression. That is, full classical songs, with essentially an entire orchestra-sized library of synthesizers & classical instruments, or classical songs with only synthesizers as instruments (not including percussion), or songs with general EDM progression and amount of instruments, but only using classical instruments; really, anything with a 50/50 balance between characteristics of EDM and characteristics of classical songs.

It's meant so that classical composers stretch their boundaries to include elements of EDM, and EDM producers stretch their boundaries to include elements of classical. People stretch their comfort zones and try something new; it can be a learning experience for everyone.

No deadline until at least 5 people join in. DEADLINE FOR SUBMISSIONS IS JANUARY 1ST. Anyone can submit any number of songs, but they must remember that there will be quality control, and that if they submit multiple songs, there is no guarantee that all of them will get in.

If you want to submit, put a wav & an mp3 in dropbox, mediafire, etc. - really, anything works, as long as you can rely on it still being there when I get it - and email me a link to both at [email protected] :)

Huh, this is what I've been doing with a project I'm working on.

If I make a song that doesn't make it for that album I'm doing, I'll submit it.
I'm Decibelle, nice to meet you.

I basically just write dance-style music with orchestral instruments, so it's likely that I will want to participate in this.

What about chiptunes/8-bit/fake-bit renditions of classical pieces? And would they have to be full on orchestra-sized pieces, or can we do things like string quartets, piano pieces, and duets?

... And can we use 20th century composers? ^.^

You can do anything, as long as you mix elements of EDM and elements of classical music in a 50/50 balance. :) Like I said, you can make a song that would otherwise be EDM, like a trance song or such, except use classical instruments such as string instruments, woodwinds, what have you. :D

I see two possibilities with this:

1. Use orchestral instruments in an EDM fashion (ex. make a bass drop with violins, cellos, and basses).
2. Use EDM instruments in a classical fashion (ex. using synths with elements of classical music behind them).

This sounds like fun. Count me in.

I prefer the IDM/Orchestral Blend, more specifically the blending of ambient and orchestral, but good luck with this!

Yup, that's the general idea. But since that's for Remix War, if you submit anything, please submit something you made after I started the event instead :)

I'm thinking of making orchestralstep, but I don't have any good orchestral samples or soundfonts. Anyone want to bring the orchestral? I can drop the bass, or break (if you perfer DnB).

Edit: I'll be available sometime in October.

Awesome! I've added you to the participant list. Now that there are 5 people, I've set a deadline. People can still join in.
