Its probably the ipod earbuds; apple in-ear headphones start to low pass at 10kHz and have weird peaks in the mid-high range with recessed mids.

I'd mix for your ATH-M50's. One of the problems with working on (or even listening to music on) good headphones is it makes it REALLY hard to enjoy music on lower quality when you loose a lot of frequency response. People that never have used them before usually don't realize what they are missing, and may think your song sounds just fine.

Thanks for the help. Still, I find it rather strange that other artists' songs sound good on my earbuds and my actual headphones but the (admittedly rather few) songs I've listened to on the earbuds just aren't up to par despite sounding good in my ATH-M50s. Perhaps it's because those other artists' tracks are professionally mixed and mastered.

Also, I suppose I should feel lucky I've never experienced the problem you mentioned at the end there. While I've had good headphones for almost a year and a half now, I have no problem listening to music on my earbuds (I use them all the time waiting for the bus, on the bus, before first period, after last period, etc). I was aware of the phenomenon beforehand and tried to avoid it as best I could (despite the nature of it making it rather difficult to avoid) and evidently must have done a fairly good job. Or maybe it's because I'm just not an audiophile or an 'audio purist' with regards to format or bitrate or anything like that.

So there's gonna be a National Geographic TV show that talks about the more weird cultures, one of which bronies.

I'm shining over here on the couch.

Yeah, but what if they only cover the bad parts of the fandom, like many news outlets? I realize National Geographic is more reputable than other places, but they could simply do it on accident, since I feel like a lot of them would be new to the concept.

This is what I've found out.
In that docu series, Darren something visits all these weird human phenomenoms (not cultures). In the episode with bronies, he wants to learn about bronies from bronies, wanting to become one himself for the docu. Apparently he showed up at BUCK 2013 in a Big Mac costume?
They also filmed stuff at BUCK, I believe.

Oh and I believe I've read somewhere that, in that docu, Darren lives with a/some brony/bronies for some time to better get to know their ways (or something like that). I don't know how accurate this is.

Why are people using cassette tapes again? The most recent Darius album got released on tape, a Noize Pervertz album and The Essence of Imperfection is getting a cassette tape release too. Have noise artists been doing this for a long time?

Using casettes became big during hypnagogic pop explosion and i think plenty of lo-fi /noise artists have been using it the same time too. I know it keeps costs low and relies on physical media but i can't think that the cumbersome aspect of quality loss and how few people own a casette player really makes it a dumb format to use. I never thought i'd recommend vinyl but i'd rather they at least look into that than casette if they need something non digital. Maybe get some 45's if its a sinlge release. But its 2014, why do we need to backtrack to an inferior medium?

And the Warmonger O x Noize Pervertz split!

Tapes are still popular with a lot of labels/artists who make Death/Doom Metal, Dark Ambient and Noise of all types.

As for why I did/am doing tape releases under Noize Pervertz, the DIY aspect of cassettes and such appeals to me.

Not even close.
Vinyls are incredibly popular for their feel and raw sound, as well as th superior quality over CDs they have.
Tapes have this really underground and DIY feel that create a good appeal to producing really underground genres onto them such as noise, dark ambient etc.

Yeah, like I said, the same.

Like what do you mean "underground", "DIY feel", "feel" and "raw"

These are all words that means essensially nothing in regards to what it actually sounds like.

So what, if noise weirdly became mainstream, would cassette be not fitting anymore?

Call me a hipster call me what you will... I use tape and vinyl because I like old technology. I use a lot of old tech. Heck I only just recently started using digital desks. The main reason I use tape is the saturated sound it gives, I'm talking about a full scale tape deck btw. And the reason I use cassette is actually because one of the cars I drive has a cassette player in it

Viricide Filly wrote:superior quality over CDs they have.

Debatable. Early CDs weren't great, to be sure, but that was because encoding formats weren't as sophisticated. It's pretty much a mathematical fact that there is no loss of information in 44.1 kHz at 16 bit PCM (which is the ideal format for a CD these days) that can be heard by normal human ears. A properly manufactured and pressed Audio CD is indistinguishable from a properly manufactured vinyl record. Assuming proper manufacturing (and storage), it's even debatable the two will be different 100 years from now.

For what it's worth, there's loss in vinyl, too, because the needle has a width. There is only so narrow a groove the needle can settle into, meaning that there's only so small a wavelength that can be recorded. Naturally, this limitation is well outside the range of human hearing, but that's really the whole question: can you hear the difference? Under the most ideal circumstances, you cannot hear the difference.

So what about that "raw" sound? Electrostatic hum. Dust settling on the record while it plays. Feedback from the speakers if the table is in the same room, and the music is played loud enough to vibrate it. The imperfections of analogue transmission of audio in commercial record players is what actually makes vinyl so popular. Given that, what eery says is perfectly true. If people who listen to vinyl listen to it for its imperfections, then that's pretty much exactly what people who listen to audio cassettes do it for; the properties of tape hiss and electrostatic hum are desirable to them.

Granted, when a CD is played back in less than ideal conditions, after improper storage, it's hard to argue that it still sounds "good." But I would hardly argue that vinyl is superior because it degrades more gracefully.

I love using cassettes and CDs! I don't have the means to play vinyl things but that would be fun too. I enjoy listening to all the sorts of formats.

in other words I recorded another piano song.
