Myself I go with a couple of Yamaha HS5's mounted on top of gingerbread boxes.(That isn't slang or anything)
I feel they've improved my mixing a lot compared to when I was using headphones only. If I remember right, they're about the price of the KRK's. And they're white instead of yellow or black, so they look sorta nice.(Totally not my endreason to pick them or anything.)
I like the HS5's more than the KRK's as well. I mentioned them because here the KRK's are slightly cheaper. And I actually have to agree about the bass response, they seem to be aimed as a bass heavy producer monitor, whereas the HS5's seem more aimed as an all rounder. I know I use HS5's in the recording studio, and a mastering engineer I know uses them alongside the HS8's in his studio. So yea go with the HS5's if they're not out of your price range. If you really need some cheap monitors M-Audio make some good enough monitors.
