Mysteries of Glowfree Forest

Postby DasDeer » 22 Dec 2011 07:01

A song i spent the last week creating. Actually, my first project where i only used orchestral stuff, and no synths or drums (only orchestral percussion).

Soo, a bit of back story to the actuall tune.
I am a huge fan of video game music, and really enjoy composing that on my free time. Buuuut, since i also like to compose pony inspired and related music, i decided to mix them up!
I wanted this song to fit in with a classic "fantasy" forest level, in a MLP platformer. You know, a forest filled with giant mushrooms, glowing plants and gigantic toads that can speak the human (or pony, i guess) language.
Inspired by games like Trine, and Zelda to name a few, but also by the Everfree Forest, and the thought "What if Everfree was Brighter and more living, but still rather dark?".

Since it was my first "only orchestral" piece, i really want some feedback. What is good, what is bad etc.

I hope you enjoy it,

Sweet! Don't think it has any real issues. However, I'm not the orchestra-aficionado round here, so maybe you should consult Makkon, Dr Dissonance or others...

I did see this and was going to watch it, but as was said, the embed was messed up...and I had to leave quickly and forgot to post anything saying so...:P

Now, firstly I swear I've heard parts of the melody before, but I think it's because the accompanying melodies/chords are the same/similar as "Castle von Tedistein" from Conker: Live and Reloaded:

Specifically the bit after the intro at 0.58!

THAT'S NOT A PROBLEM of course! It's just the first thing I noticed, which is weird, considering they're so different!

Anyway, the piece itself:

I can't say too much really, the variation was nice enough for the timeframe and the harmonies and use of timbre were good!

The only thing I can really nitpick is a small bit at 0.40! The flute playing the melody there is very nice, but the final few notes of each phrase seem to be panned differently to the others...it gives the impression that there are 2 flutes, or the single flute is possessed! :P Unless you actually used 2 flutes, maybe consider panning them together, so they sound like the same instrument!

But great job! Liked and subbed!!!

Yes, now that you mention it, i hear what you mean. I'm not sure why it sounds like that to be honest, i probably got sloppy and did something wrong. Big thanks for pointing it out!

Also, thanks for all the feedback. I'm very glad you all liked it, and Senator, if you ever need advice just ask. I'd be glad to help you out.

Huge thanks for the feedback; i wish you greay holidays!

You haven't played MYST by any chance? Because the music reminds me greatly of that series, which I must say were the most important games in my childhood. :D

One of my favourite classical pieces out there! :)

I actually haven't, but i know what they're about and the gameplay elements overall. This tune is mostly inspired by Legend of Zelda and Trine. (awesome platforming game, look it up! ^^)

Thanks you, i am happy that you like it so much!
