Use the wave forms Strontinium or however you spell it and Chrome in NI Massive as well, otherwise you won't be getting anywhere very fast.

And while I'm here, I may as well spill the beans about how to get the best basses. There's a waveform in NI Massive called "Modern Talking", if you use it, you're 100% certain to get the best basses out there.

Don't forget your phase modulation and your sine/parabolic shapers. Both can give you disgustingly beautiful results.

Omnipony's basses aren't bad, if that's what people are making fun of. All he needs to do is not apply dimension expander or any sort of stereo widening and then they'd sound much better and he'd be just fine.

And while I'm here, I'll point out that FM8, or most FM synths for that matter, can make much more interesting bass sounds than Massive.

Omni is known to utilize the poor practice of putting dimension expander on his basses, which is a really bad thing to apply to your bass.

It's worth discussing the do's and dont's of music production as well as how to's. I think a lot of producers can learn a lot by listening to other productions and taking note of what's good and what's bad. In Omnipony's case, I think his basses would be great if it weren't for the stereo spreading he puts on them.

Stereo spread on basses might sound neat at first, but you lose a lot of energy and weight from your bass when doing so, not to mention that your bass becomes incompatible for mono, which has its own additional problems. Keep your basses mono, fellas.

If you're using sampled bass libraries and you notice that it isn't 100% mono compatible, make sure you put a MONO gain plugin on the effects chain to sum the signal to a mono signal. Logic Pro has a plugin that does this called the Gain plugin.

The point is to keep the basses centered but you can spread the mids and highs like crazy to make ridiculously wide bass synths. Frequency splits gentlemen, frequency splits all the time.

Also if you have an EQ with Mid/Side mode you can just cut all the low frequencies out of the side channel, which can clean things up

All reasons why I can't listen to Omnipony, especially on headphones. Stereo spread subson headphones give me a really, really bad headache. I critiqued someones mix where they had spread the bass artificially and I felt horrid for about half an hour, dunno what thats all about :|
