Rate My Wubs!

From scales and semitones to pentatonics and cadence patterns. It's all about the science behind the expression, here.

It needs to be catchier. It has some sweet sounds, but bad sequencing and progression. Also, I don't like those floppy drive-ish sounds. Maybe try incorporating some melodic pads into it like Alvin Risk and Knife Party do.

Anyone know ways to improve this sorta thing? I have no idea if I'll ever use these kinds of sounds..

No, I think people have just stopped listening to other people's uploads on this thread. It always happens in these kinds of threads, so I'm pretty sure it's dead.

I've never cared for FM synthesis, (I prolly should though) but if I had to give advice it would probably be: modulate a lot, but don't go too overboard. FM synthesis lets you have really complex sounds with crazy harmonics, but that can easily get out of control, and it's a nightmare during mixing.

I decided to make it a tribute to Super Mario Bros. (which I've been trying to beat) in stead of ponies.
All sounds, by the way, were made entirely by me with absolutely no help. I didn't recycle any old presets, either. :D
Any advice on how to make it awesomer?

For this one, the drums could really punch through more. I can barely hear them. But the main problem with the whole thing is that it could be structured better. The sounds don't sound like they fit together in the way that you arranged them, and the whole thing just doesn't seem to go anywhere.

But I love that growl. I really do.

Wow, that sounds awesome! My only two complaints are: that "yoy" sound at 0:27 has got to go, and the snare is incomprehensibly muddy. Just fix that up and you've got a nice glitch hop track.

The thing is, the only thing that's preventing this track from being great is what isn't there. I can understand the similar-sounding basslines, but the mix doesn't feel filled out. I'd probably either do the obvious thing and add a few crazy synths or whatever, but what I think would fit this track better is if you added some harmonics using distortion. Then, you don't have to worry about mixing the new synths in and the track will still have a lot of energy. Take a listen to this:

Obviously, it's a completely different feel than what you're going for but a similar principle applies. There's actually very little going on in the drop in terms of different [sounding] sounds, but those sounds are extremely rich and beefy. I wuuub your track anyways. (The sub is pretty cool sounding)

Structuring has always been my main problem in these kinds of projects. I can do really good sound design, but I for some reason just can't put them together well at all. The only song that I've ever been able to sequence well with many different sounds is Cloudchaser (but that was a pretty bad song overall, anyway). I have never been able to find any resources on how to structure a drop, because all of the tutorials are just about making growls and wubs, and they assume anyone can put them together well without any problems.

Does anyone know any good guides on sequencing? If not, I'll have to find someone to collab with.

Update:
I restarted the sequencing of the drop entirely, messed with the drums a bit, and added moar bass. Unfortunately it's only a four second clip right now, but I'll expand it based on the feedback I get here. So this is what I have now:

You got me worried tho, because my computer is really crappy and i'm not sure if it's distorting my sound output. Is the snare really that muddy? It's obviously loud in volume, but otherwise it's snappy and clean from what i hear. Also, the sub is just a sine with some bitcrush lfo, does it stand out? I can't notice it with my headphones.

Well, I think the sub sounds pretty nice. I never said it stuck out, I just said it sounded cool. As for the snare, what I meant is it sounds very lowpassed and awkward to listen to. It punches through the mix just fine, but it doesn't have any high end to it, making it strange to listen to.

I love the snare, Random, really makes the track stand out. You'll want to either lower the volume though or compress it, it's peaking like crazy.

before i go post a new thing, ill help you with urs :D
now im thinking that with what you have, you've got wayy to much modulation going on at once, and thats making it sound almost too dirty(?) What i do when playing with FM8 is create a really simple patch, that almost just sounds like a saw/sine wave, but i try and find a routing that allows me to really morph the whole sound with just one control, and then ill mess with some really short delay to widen the sound, then add some external distortion (ohmicide is my best friend)
hope i helped :S

On the bits following the "WOWww"s, I'd definitely add something with more mid-range body. After having something like the first part, the bits following it just feel underwhelming in a way, like they're harder to notice comparatively.

Overall, though, I really like the sound. Can't wait to hear the finished product!

Nothing to complain on here! Only improvement I can think of would be the drumms, the snare is a bit to loud/ sharp, and maby ading some more percusion would lift it even more.

Nice. A bit repetetive though. I would turn one or those high pitch "WAaoo" slides so it slides up instead, and posibly ad some more sounds. But yeah, good job.

I did some experimenting with useing delay set to a very low time to make the effects. (and I added Fluttershy crying at the end, because fluttershy, and because its a nice way to end it)

Well, it's certainly an interesting sound, but the sub isn't very prominent. I suggest adding a bass boost. Would be good to high-pass that and add sub in a different channel (unless you already did that).

It's definitely loud, but even just by itself, it sounds muddy. Way too much going on in the 250-500Hz region.
