Rate My Wubs!

From scales and semitones to pentatonics and cadence patterns. It's all about the science behind the expression, here.

Take that melodic wobble in the background out. It really just ruins everything. Instead, the effects you put on that should be applied to the main bass.

I'm Assuming your talking about Omegastick? If so, yeah, now that you mention it, it does seem kind of distracting. I'm sure the melodic wobble would sound just fine as just a melodic synth, maybe with some reverb or resonance to keep the roomie effect. I'd suggest maybe including the name of the person your talking about, to avoid confusion.

So here's something I've been working on. Making effective bass drops can be a real pain in the ass, but once I found something that worked, I had a blast with it XD!

Oh, and I used Native Instruments Razor for this one.

Loving that metallic robotic sound. You're clearly using Razor correctly.

Thanks, I spent a lot of time learning how to use razor properly. It's a very neat synth. I eventually want to start using Massive more often, but there are so many knobs and settings on it that I got a little intimidated by it.

That said, it is also very easy to fuck up the sound in Razor, it took me three failed attempts before I got this sound XD!

Don't be intimidated. It's actually a very simple synth that just has some deep features. Like the whole routing tab. I don't get that. :P

But seriously, just keep watching tutorials and screwing around with the synth. It'll become your best friend. :D

DarkShadow79 as others said, if you put a much punchier sub in there, it would kick ass.

(this really is a minimal amount of effort on my part, but i wanna see what you guys think)
plus pro tip for sub bass
sine wave, cut at 80 hz
saturate it a bit

Okay guys, thanks for the feedback.

Owing to my lack of a sound card I have developed a habit of re-sampling my particularly processor heavy synths after I'm happy enough with the sound. This makes doing things like changing synths hugely like you asked very difficult. I've done everything I can, though, to make the high-pitched wobble less annoying. I've gone and taken the filter off for half the song, brought it down in the mix, taken out some of the notes that were cluttering everything and a bunch of other stuff.

Killeramp, I'm loving the urgency and pace of it all but you really need some mids in the mix. The 1k-5k range sounds completely empty to me which means you can fit in another synth or two or some vocals in that area.

haha yeah, hence the lazy effort, if i was to spend more time, i would most likely have put a pad or light synth playing a repetitive pattern to fill the frequency range, also id probably add more sounds, but thanks!

I know this isn't a wobble bass, but dayum! Sound filthy.

No, I did not use modern talking. If you don't believe me, you can give modern talking a try for yourself. Good luck with that.

I actually used EQ automation to make it growl.

Still better than any dubstep I've produced. I'm not good at dubstep.

Meh, I don't generally do wubs that well, and here it shows as usual~

http://soundcloud.com/plaguedr/rate-my-wubs-except-there

Of course, it is 5:30 in the morning... on the day before a new pony ep... I should probably try to sleep.

Edit: Now that it's not 5:30 in the morning, maybe I'll remember to be considerate of the rules, blegh.

@KillerAmp: Agreed with Omegastick, love the sound, but it needs something mid-range.

@Omegastick: Dunno about the WIP clip you posted, but going by the track in your sig, you've got it down. I definitely like the melodic wub you're using around 1:25.

I'd say I made this in about 20-30 minutes. It's really just an experiment in resampling, so plz ignore the crappy mixing and sub. :P

https://dl.dropbox.com/s/bw8dnixkacvvlc ... 20Lewp.wav

Here's the sample I used. All I did was stretch it, pitch it, and distort it a bit. (This is from the Supalife Dubstep: Dark Edition sample pack)

So... yerh.

Cloud, your sound design is amazing, proper Knife Party quality stuff. You just need to work on the rhythm. As a general rule, dubstep drops 'fluctuate' (for lack of a better word) in rhythm. For example, the sound you have at the beginning (the whoooooooo) is fine, in the bar you want something with more of a pumping feel to it. Perhaps automate a lowpass filter to a mixture of 16th, 8th and maybe one or two 6th notes on top of the sound you have there already. As a guess, a square wave on the LFO would work best there, but a saw or sine would also work. I wouldn't know for sure without trying it myself. Your synths are perfect, though, you just need to throw some filters and gates on there to get that dubstep feel.

Well, I stayed up till 7:30 instead of 5:30 this time. Cool.

Anyway, started this little bit and got to a bit of the drop, at least. (Jump to, like, the very end for the drop. :P)

Edit: Ended up staying up instead of sleeping and played with it some more, so I'm just gonna update this:

The first minute and fifteen seconds are perfect. The drop could have some better sounds and a glitchier feel. The EQ and mastering seems fine, just a few of the synths need some work. Oh, and maybe add some sub bass. I couldn't hear much of it, but I was listening on earbuds, so that might be why.

Any suggestions on how to get a "glitchier feel"? Fair amateur here. ;)

Yeah, I don't have any sub bass yet (not counting what's provided by one of my kicks, though I guess I'll have to get figure out what to do with the conflicting bass).

This doesn't really have wubs, but I'll share something I just started working on a few hours ago. It's my first serious dist-bassy sort of attempt. It's really sloppy right now, especially the intro. I didn't feel like working much on that, so I just sort of went with a rough copy of Champloo by Mord Fustang, and didn't start on the build-up at all. And the melody is also written in a key that doesn't exist.
But here's glitch hop with moombahcore-style synths and sequencing:
http://soundcloud.com/pewter-robot/i-dont-know-yet
I used SoundCloud so the drop doesn't surprise you after the long break that I'll fill in with a build-up.
Anyway, this was made just now, so it's going to get a lot better. I just felt like sharing it. :D

I hadn't tried glitch hop (or any kind of real drop) until just a couple of hour ago, but it sounds like you don't have enough gaps in the sequencing, and it sounds like there's too much reverb. It just doesn't sound choppy like a glitch hop drop should. Sorry I don't have much advice. Maybe a more experienced member here can help you more.

Okay, here's what mine sounds like now:
http://soundcloud.com/pewter-robot/i-warned-you-about-mushrooms
I decided to make it a tribute to Super Mario Bros. (which I've been trying to beat) in stead of ponies.
All sounds, by the way, were made entirely by me with absolutely no help. I didn't recycle any old presets, either. :D
Any advice on how to make it awesomer?
