Rate My Wubs!

From scales and semitones to pentatonics and cadence patterns. It's all about the science behind the expression, here.

I got one coming up in a bit. It might be quite funny, considering I've never tried a drop before.

Ever.

I've never heard a good sounding atonal dubstep bass. NEVER.

In one hand, dont agree that all sound atonal, but I think It sounds badas as hell when they are (when they are used in a good way)
By the good way I mean used in the right context, the song is more based on rythm than melody.
Kinda like this

Im quite sure this is good atonal bass used in dubstep, if not I have no idea what the word good or atonal mean.
(thats the only song I know uses it, and I love it)

I like it. Dont have any direct critisism or feedback... but if it was an experiment, I declare it a success!

This post won't give nor take.

The concept of the thread is great. I love it. Still, it's gone a bit messy and will continue to, if nothing is done.

I think a whole subforum and a thread for each sound-bunch for this would be perfect, but that's not gonna happen.

We need more organisation still. Rules for things such as formatting even. The small things.

I had a hard time locating the original post when reading the reply's, and knowing what exactly was an entry. Discussions (such as the one about sub-bass) will occur, and they are for the better. Just as the general feedback, they contribute to every who's reading, but distinguishing them from the entries, and (later on) navigating through several discussions and sounds, was, can and will be difficult.

Clarification. I think that's all we need, or at least I. (selfish eccentric me)

Reply's. How can we safely refer to other posts? Entire quotes takes too
much space, but small one only containing the essential? (my suggestion)
Discussions. Keeping them relevant. (which is knowing where a discussion post belongs in context) I'd say quotes (like those, but place consuming), links, or *shiver* hashtags. #MySuggestion (or...or...OR, both of the last two)
Formatting and classifying. I think some standards, just to make it easy finding within posts. Nothing too restricting. Perhaps just the order of the different segments (entries, reply/feedback, etc). This can be combined with previous suggestion. Neatness, all in all. (my suggestion)

I know much of this has already been done, and I haven't covered all, but I think standards would be neat.

These are all suggestions passed on to you. Ultimately, it's up to you (GhostXb and else), and you've done a pretty good job om this so far. I will probably format it better once when I get back on my computer/remove the post entirely, since I'm stupid.

Cross that last one.
Constructive criticism is more than welcome. I embrace it.

I rarely make any sense when I post from my phone. And I post from my phone.

Yeah Seven, you bring some good points. A post format will help keep things cleaner, and I will update the main post accordingly. Also, for anyone else reading this, please be more vigilant in keeping your post's relevant. This thread has gone off on a tangent, I could care less whats atonal or not.

I'm gonna redo the main post to clarify a few things and make it easier to read.

Oooh that's really nice! Needs some kind of melody/chords in my taste. I would imagine that sounding better if the drums would be snappier and more clear, maybe some sidechaining?

I have no clue how to make them sit in the mix to be honest. I want to put some pads in there, but I have no clue where to begin. I was listening to Storm's "Lunatic" earlier and was wondering how I could do something like those melodies in the back of the drop. I just have no clue how, haha.

And sidechaining maybe could fix the issue, but I just have to learn to manage the low end better. Either that or layer my drums better.

edit: http://dl.dropbox.com/u/84260720/wubs%2 ... odizer.mp3 I mixed it again WITHOUT a soundgoodizer on the maser. Any better? I also sidechained the kick and eq'd it a bit.

My only crit for yours is that snare. Maybe a tad too much reverb?

Some of the wubs are way too loud compared to the other sounds. Bring those down a bit.
A good thing to remember is that the kick drum should always be the loudest part of the song.
Also, don't forget to compress the master; I hate it when some of the sounds are much quieter than the others.

Whoops, forgot to give feedback.

GhostXb: just a generic, one osc wobble. Personally, I hear it too much and it's really boring. Experiment with filters. Modulate EVERYTHING

XXDarkShadow79XX: You might benefit from messing around with the noise OSC. Your "bassline" reminds me of the "paper" noise.

Nexaka: Very clean and professional sounding. Did you design all those sounds yourself, and how long have you been working in Massive?

@Nexaka: Dayuum, that's very nice, it's all put together very well. Though some of the sounds are too quiet or too loud, try to make them all at the same level of volume.

Here's a wobble im using in a smooth dubstep song of mine. There are meant to be other sounds with it, but I figured I'd only show the actual wubs.

No lie, I like it cause I love the farting bass. I'd suggest a bit more variation on it here and there. a 1/8 wobble is good but gets kinda boring after a while. Then again I don't listen to much smooth dubstep. Its usually over-the-top all the time. Unless smooth is supposed to be 1/8th the entire time then hey, there ya go.

So while I was trying to make a Drum & bass remix of Mr. Bigglesworth's Crash Course, this happened. Wat? Anyway, I decided to actually make a bass sound since its easier to use but...ya rate my wubs plz? >:3

Hey guys. I made some wubs.

http://soundcloud.com/chromatic-chaos-pony/wub-wub

I started out with something basic in Synth1, and then started layering effects until it sounded like Downlink (or at least close enough).

What do you think?

Hey guys, first post here

I've been lurking for a long time now (mostly in class, to be honest) so I figured I should sign up and say hello. Is there an introduction section or anything? I can't see one.

ChromaticChaosPony wrote:snip

I like the idea you've got there. Perhaps there is a little too much white noise and/or distortion going on. I'd say clean it up a bit and you've got some really, really nice wubs. Just remember that every instrument doesn't have to fill out the whole mix, if you were to layer three or four of the synths you made together it would sound very messy.

Anyways, here's a WIP of the drop from my latest track. Tell me what you think! Please nitpick, I don't take offense to any criticism at all. Personally, I'm thinking the mix sounds a bit cluttered at points, perhaps I could take out an instrument when it gets to that point. Ideas? I'm gonna play around in Ableton with it for a while.

https://soundcloud.com/omegastick/modulate-drop-wip

Ooh, just noticed I need to bring the kick up in the mix too. EDIT: Actually, I'm not entirely sure about that, what do you guys think?

@Chromatic Pony: Really like the low end, but the mid to high range is lacking. Maybe EQ that up, or maybe layer another synth on top of it? If your going to use it in a song, you can also layer some melodies or leads on it to make it sound more complete.

@Omegastick: Yeah the kick does need to be brought up a bit. Other then that I can't say much unless I was tinkering with it myself. Also, the introduction thread is in the community forum.

Also, I haven't been contributing to this thread much, even though I started it. That's because the last few weeks for me have been absolute hell, but the worst is behind so w00t! Back to making music!

I'll probably layer another synth later. This was just a quick test.

In fact, I'll probably use Massive instead of Synth1 next time.
