How Lo Can you Go: Lo-fi meets Mainstream

Postby Viricide Filly » 21 Jun 2016 08:21

Me and LemonLoser were brainstorming in pinkamena party and decided that it would be a cool idea to lo-fi the shit out of the more popular and less-ruined genres in popular music.

So we're pleased to announce HLCYG (pronounced halkeeg)

In this really dumb, stupid compo album that will be a disaster, we're asking for participants to apply as many lo-fi techniques as you can to the following genres:
    Dubstep
    House
    Glitch hop
    Future bass
    neurofunk
    Liquid DnB
    Trap
    Future garage
    Any other popular genres you can think of

We also accept non-electronic stuff such as rock, folk, orchestral, punk etc, but we'd prefer if it had electronic influences or parts or samples.

If you're wondering what the HECKING HECK "lo-fi" is, it's basically music that applies any of the following effects, rules and techniques;
    Compression
    Low bitrates
    Compression artefacts
    Tape hiss
    Audible vinyl crackle
    Small noise influences
    Messy percussion placement
    Samples from tapes/vinyl/whatever
    Bad mic recordings of aforementioned samples
    Muddy mixing
    Clipping
    Hard limiters

Basically, we're asking you to produce your favourite overdone genre, except forget everything you knew about good mixing, mastering and make it sound BAD (in the good way, of course!)

We have a few rules that submissions MUST ABIDE BY;

    Nothing that would make your ears bleed
    Music must have some semblence of either a beat, a rhythm, a melody, a tempo or a polyrhythm
    So basically, no EAI, no lowercase, no harsh noise, no extratone
    We DO accept genres other than the ones listed here, so if you're more comfortable doing a genre that's commonly lo-fied such as instrumental hip-hop, folk, old school dubstep, UK garage, footwork etc, go right ahead, but please keep in mind the theme of the album is to apply lo-fi to genres that don't normally have lo-fi applied to them.
    Please remember to make music. Lo-fi DOESN'T mean absolutely garbage shitposting.
    Please submit your tracks in either WAV or FLAC (if you give me flac I'll be very happy)
    If you're wondering how you get that sick bad bitrate feel from a flac or wav literally just export it as a low bitrate mp3 and then re-export that as a wav or flac, it works
    We do not accept anything that uses the fucking FL studio stock samples, if you can't make good drums, just sample them from another track. Use your imagination.

DEADLINE IS SEPTEMBER 1ST PLEASE TELL ME IF THIS IS UNREASONABLE I'VE SORTA NEVER DONE THIS BEFORE

If you are still unsure how to make lo-fi music, yours truly has some excellent examples in the spoiler below
