What are some ways to figure out the key in an acapella?

Postby BronyMetalMix » 10 Apr 2015 18:02

I'm planning on doing a remix of a song from the show, using the song from tomorrow's episode. I've never done a remix before honestly and I would like to know if there's any ways I can figure out the key of a song besides ears? I'm not the best at identifying what note someone hits with a voice or instrument yet so are there other ways to figure out the key with a singing voice?

Relative pitch with an instrument in hand should help a lot, if you play along with it in guitar or a keyboard or whatever you should be able to easily determine a key. Software-wise, I'm aware of key detection being a feature of Melodyne; I've heard that there's this other free program called Show Scale that also does this, though I have no idea if it works well or not

In FL studio there's newtone which is accessible by clicking on pitch adjustment on a wav sample. Like melodyne it will show you which notes the samples falls under and you can even export that as a midi pattern. Melodyne has more overall features and use i must say.

Another option is to take a sample or a full song and have the website chordify analyze what the chords are for each portion. It's rather helpful and you can pay from them to create a basic midi or the chords if you want but it's often easier to just use it for free.

From there you can see the notes in use and calculate the key of the song, ask a fellow musician who's good at identifying them, or a webiste that you can plug that data into. There's also dj software that can identify not only bpm's of a song but also its key which is handy.

Don't forget that often first responders on youtube have a knack for creating acapellas, midi'sm and tabulations of songs in a few days (often in piano form). Those will often all appear at the same time the acapellas do. Many ppl get their remixes started from the efforts of these few people....

Thanks to both of ya. I gave newtone a try. I was kinda worried about it if it would give incorrect pitch. I think imma do a chill remix of "Hush Now, Quiet Now". I just put it into newtone, wrote down the notes that came up and put them into key. It looks like it's in D# major, cause even with pitch adjustments in the song it falls under the key.
