Official Discussion Thread (Ghost Edit)

Sports, politics, movies, videogames, questionable hobbies, photos from your family vacation, etc. Talk about stuff that isn't ponies or music. But do try to stay on topic and respectful of alternate opinions.

Killing people isn't illegal tho. Murder is, and a most other ways to kill people to, but all forms of killing people aren't illegal... everywhere. Death penalty requires someone to kill someone else, and there are still places where that's legal.

That being said, I think death penalty is a retarded form of punishment.

I don't know if "retarded" is the right term for that, but I kind of agree to that.
Like, very long term solitary confinement would make someone crazy. (As in like 30+ years of it.) and that would make that person in solitary confinement extremely bored. For an extremely long time. That would be a worse punishment in my opinion. Being locked in an empty room for 30 years would drive me mad.

Also, if you're in certain groups of the military, there are lots of people you're legally allowed to kill. You're also legally allowed to kill people if it falls within a vaguely defined and mostly nonsensical criteria for self defense, or in even more vaguely defined criteria for "necessary force" if you're a police officer.

What use is that though really? Like besides society feeling justified and the victims feeling like they got some sort of weird "revenge"?

Like what use is it, in a broad sense, to keep people alive for no reason whatsoever, besides us feeding some sort of weird sense of "justice"?

It's useless, it costs to keep them living and fed, and it's not like you're trying to rehabilitate the person either, or get them back in society, so what use is this, like at all?

Not that I'm in support of the death penalty or whatever, but I don't really see the use of like lifelong sentences either. It doesnt help the induvidual or society.

Studies show that majority of people in solitary confinement commit suicide. So technically solitary confinement is still killing someone...

I hate it when I start arguments I never wanted to start... and this is one of those times...

I still wanna say my opinion though.
Death penalty is stupid, cause 1. it's cruel to the offenders, their family and their friends; 2. It doesn't benefit society in any way compared to imprisonment; 3. Because there is no way of saying, "Oops, sorry. I guess you weren't guilty. Here, have your life back, and have a bunch of money too for your troubles."

It's really just a big contraversy because everyone has their own ideas about it. Nobody here is right or wrong.
I agree with multiple view points on both sides for and against death penalty, but what am I going to do about it anyway? I'm not politically known nor do I plan on getting known in a political world.

Actually, taking into account the costs of the cocktail of drugs they use in lethal injection, pay for the medical staff that administers the drugs, and maintenance of the specialized facilities, and legal costs incurred by the process of prosecuting a death penalty case, the death penalty is more expensive than life imprisonment.

http://www.forbes.com/sites/kellyphilli ... h-penalty/

I see many reasons the death penalty ought to be abolished besides this, really. It removes the possibility of redemption in cases where the offender could eventually feel remorse. It removes the possibility of exoneration by new evidence down the road. It asks the doctors who perform it to flout the Hippocratic Oath. It is driven more by a desire for revenge than for justice. It forces one to ask the philosophic question of whether a society that takes lives as a measure of law has the moral authority to judge its members when they take lives.

I think that if you ever find yourself using "they deserve it" (or something similar) as part of an argument in favor of a serious punishment, then you should probably reconsider how much your views are based on practical morality and how much they're based on a sense of revenge. I've noticed myself falling into that trap a lot. It's hard to think about topics like this without letting a sense of retribution influence your conclusions.

That's not directed at anyone's posts so far. I'm mostly just agreeing with what people have already said here.

Surely, the discussion must have come up at some point in equestria too, though?

Just sorta like to imagine that being discussed in like a meeting room with Celestia present and shit.

By request, we will stop talking about the death penalty.
If you would like to continue this discussion, it' seems to have had enough interest to have its own thread (even if it's only going to be active for a few days)
Someone do that
