Music Theory Analysis Partner

Postby Wittyname » 29 Jul 2014 13:47

Hello!

I am thinking of doing an in-depth analysis of all the songs from the show, and maybe some of the other more popular fan-made songs, and creating YouTube videos or writing documents which will present the analysis in an easy to understand way for people interested in the theory.

I'd like a partner or two who is knowledgeable about music theory to help me to analyze the music and make everything work. Please let me know if you're interested!

Hey!

Thanks guys for the feedback. I'll just PM anyone who posts saying they are interested or contacts me.

Just by the way, I'd like the people I'm working with to be fairly comfortable with the theory, since that's what we would be working with. So if you're comfortable with the idea of the mixolydian mode or deceptive cadence, that's great, send me a PM! If not, maybe you would enjoy watching/reading one of these things once they are made.

Edit: I will also be asking for advice.

Do you think it would be better as a YouTube video or a document? I'm leaning towards YouTube, but I don't really know how to make video stuff or use YouTube.

Edit: I guess you did say watch.

Yes please. This is what the music tutorial world needs, pony related or not. A scripted video detailing events of a song and breaking it down in order to teach a lesson in a subject of music, and not a kid going "and uh, we'll uh do this and um, maybe turn this knob a bit. Like this. Or uhhhhhh. Yeah, it sounds pretty good" in a low voice.

i'd personally love to see something like chilly gonzales' master classes on pop music, except longer and fleshed-out of course. great idea! as for the songs in the episodes, how would you be grouping them in the actual video? by episode or song?

I was thinking I would make a video for each song. Of course, if the song is particularly complex, like the This Day Aria, I would probably make 2 videos.

Any advice on how the video should be formatted?
Like should I have the screen be the sheet music, and I can point at it with my mouse and talk, or maybe I should have a piano for people to see so I can play chords, or maybe switch between the two?

Edit: I watched a Chilly Gonzales video, and I would be doing something way more in-depth than what he's doing. He's giving very high level analysis. I'm thinking much more looking at the piece measure by measure, and the harmonic progressions and stuff.

Why not both? At the same time? I suppose you don't always need them to be the same time. But doing both would be advisable. I think to keep it interesting, you could also do video of you, or somebody, talking and explaining what's going on so that not every video is just plain video of a top view of a piano or sheet music. Something like what LinusTechTips does, but for pony music. Something similar would be the most helpful. Because Linus's format for doing videos is very good, imo.

By the way, would anyone else actually be interested in watching this? I don't want to make a whole video that nobody cares about.

If anyone wants to post telling me if they're interested, and maybe how much music theory they know, that would be really helpful!

I'd be down for watching this, even if it just goes over kinda basic stuff. It would definitely help a lot of people

If you ever need something for it, I've had up to advanced harmony (modal modulation, non-linear structural analysis, jazz theory, that kind of stuff)
