I've been trying to wrap my head around this sound in this https://soundcloud.com/viperrecordings/seven-lions-below-us-smooth-remix
I've been using massive and a few sounds in the digital/hybrid section with a low bass...and I got nothing.

Which sound specifically? I could probably recreate all of these, but which one are you after? :)

The Gritty Bass sound heard through out the drop, also would you have any tips on how I could learn oh to reverse engineer these sounds myself cause I feel like such bother asking how to make certain sounds.

It's basically just an overdriven reese. I layered up two reeses I had lying about and ran one of them through Camelcrusher. If you have Massive, here are the patches plus one extra: https://www.dropbox.com/s/szea4o2971d4qgn/reeses.rar
If you don't have massive, here's what I did for the basic sound:

3 oscillators, each one is a square/saw with a slightly different wavetable position. 1 is pitched -12.04 semitones, 2 is -24.06 ST and 3 is -11.96 ST. There is ringmod on osc 1 with an LFO modulating that. I added some tube distortion and some slight EQ to taste. I used two band reject filters with different cutoff frequencies.

The second one was just nearly the same but with no detune (all set to -12 ST) and slightly different EQ.

I tried going at it with a low bass filter and like three different wavetables for the digital hybrid and I guess I forgot that reese basses are usually Detuned sawtooth waves so I have not Idea where my friend was going with "It's like and Electro house bass just lowpass it bro" , but anyway thank you very much I shall mess about with these settings and see how close I can get.

Try making the wobble sound from the drop, but then putting a comb filter on there and mess with the pitch and damping until you like it. You could also automate the resonance to get an effect sorta like the one above. Really short delay might also serve to add some texture. Some light overdrive wouldn't go amiss but be sure not to actually distort the sound to much.

Alright, so you know those types of Reese basses used in dubstep that have less of a gritty neurofunk sound, and more of a "distant, detuned, and hollow" type of sound?

I've got no idea how they make em. I know the Lunacy wavetable in Massive with phase modulation produces a decent sound that's used quite often, but I'm wondering if anybody knows the theory of crafting unique Reeses.

Here's an example of what I'm talking about:
*The sound I'm referring to is most prominent at 1:39*

DAW: Cubase 6.5, Ableton Live 8
Preferred Genre: Industrial/Trance
Hardware: Schecter Diamond Series Bass, Yamaha Acoustic Guitar, BP355 Effects Pedal, Keystudio 49K Keyboard, Akai APC40, Korg nanoKEY2 25k Keyboard

Take a sine, attach an envelope the the pitch (decreasing) and set the same envelope to open up a lowpass if you want.

Failing that, take a bubble pop sound (maybe like this for example http://www.freesound.org/people/blue2107/sounds/59978/) and turn it into a sampler instrument. Set a slightly slower attack and bam. Bubble lead. :)

I'm gonna have to spend more time with this one .. Are you referring to the machine-gun bassline or the growls etc interspersed between?

I'm talking about the growls/slides mixed in, not the main bass.

The song is listed to be 88bpm on beatport, so starting the 1:39 section off as measure 1, the following is the sound I'm referring to:

Measure 1 - Beats 2.5, 3.5, and 4.5

Measure 3 - Beats 2.5 and 3.5

Measure 6 - Beats 1 and 1.5

Measure 8 - Beats 1 and 1.5

Sounds like Massive to me. Much Chrome, very Sonic, such Bend -/+, wow. For the vowel sound it's probably double notch and low pass 4. Sample & hold is usually the go-to effect for yoi sounds too. I think I have a patc like this somewhere. I'll dig it out for you later.

Well if it's FM then I'm very unlikely to do it exactly how he does. But you can achieve a very very similar result by using the Massive method I gave. :)

I'm looking for whatever they did to the vocals right there in the begining. I'm guessing it's a synth following the pitch of a sample and the volume of the synth controled by the volume of the sample, but I don't know how to make that happen :/

Hi. I'm new on here. And the first thing I'd like to do is ask a question. I've been screwing around with Massive, Harmor, Sytrus, and FM8 for the past 8 hours or so. And I'm utterly and totally stumped about the synths in a song I'm trying to cover. The song is Aviators' Shadows, and I'm stumped on three synths in particular. One is the higher pitched synth that plays during Glaze's part, and the other two (or three?) synths play around the 3:14 mark, during the pre-bridge. What are they? How can I make them? Help?

If it's that higher pitched sound I hear at first @ 3:14
then you can 3xoSC with a square wave inverted with a flanger (pretty accurate)
If it's that other sound at like 3:2something then I'm thinking sine waves frequency modulating sine waves w/ comb filter
Nice.

Well, there's no hard and fast rule. You can probably get away with a single oscillator saw wave, put the attack for both volume and cut-off at their lowest possible values, and give them very fast decays, with sustains at their lowest values. Adjust as necessary. As you grow, though, there's a bunch of techniques you can use to get them sounding beefier and more unique.

On another note, I totally know a couple dudes from the Shelby area. One of them's one of the best players of Super Smash Brothers Melee for the Nintendo Gamecube in the world.

There's something there that sounds like a staccato string bass sample. Other than that there's some percussion edits. I'm not particularly sure what you're looking for.
