A reasonable price for an album

Postby Injustrial » 01 Mar 2014 20:37

Not sure if this is the right place, feel free to move it if it doesn't fit.

What do you think is a reasonable price for a digital album? Most people releasing a digital only album are indie and hobbyist musicians, so naturally those releases tend to be priced lower than professional releases. I've mostly seen them around the 10 dollars/euros/pounds depending on the region. I feel this is usually a fair price, since they often contain 12+ tracks and last for a good 45-60 minutes.

What's your view on this?

I just post mine for $0.35/song, with cheaper prices for whole albums. Apparently bandcamp doesn't do lower than 0.35 anymore, so $0.50/song is fine for me. Of course, I offer all my songs for free download and just sell songs as a form of extra support.

I have never really given much thought to it, but just to get my word out there, I believe what you say, around $10 or whatever for a 12-track album could be toned down a little imo. Maybe $7,50. But I don't know really.

(Also, you posted this thread twice, you should remove the double.)

Yeah, I just noticed it.
I wasn't exactly thinking about my own upcoming, but prices in general. iTunes seem to usually sell their full lengths at 10$ a pop. Bandcamp is more of a wild west, with some going for as much as 20$ and others ast a measly 5. Production quality does play a certain role, but amount of songs doesn't even seem to a factor.

Typically it's 7-10$ for albums, 2-5$ for EPs, and 1$ for singles, or the closest equivalents in other currencies. 20$ is usually reserved for either physical copies with booklets, or albums which are really damn long without losing any quality.

I still see quite a few go for less, though. For instance, C418's full albums seem to go around $5 and his EPs are almost all $1.
Notebook Memories, the debut album from yours truly, is currently up on my bandcamp for free. Any feedback, encouragement, hate mail, etc. is highly appreciated! Even just listening is pretty cool of you tbh.

I'd say about 10$ for an album 7$ for a shorter album and 5-2 for an ep ^^ (a little less than 1$ per track is usually standard for non-record/itunes/beatport releases from my experience)

I think 10 euros/dollars would be good price for album. Not too high but not too low.

Ten bucks is never a bad option for a reasonable-quality album, and five bucks for an EP is just splendid.

Can go lower and leave the buyer an opportunity to pay more thru bandcamp. $10 for a cd for brony / non label musician seems a bit steep to me. Was gonna charge $2 for mine but maybe that's really shafting myself. $4-5 could be quite fair. Then again bandcamp's default is $8 if i remember right (which is what it defaults to if you run out of free credits)
