Hardcore-Techno (and similars) Discussion Thread

Postby ExoBassTix » 06 Jan 2014 04:30

This thread is for discussion about Hardcore (the gabber one), Industrial Hardcore, (Fast) Frenchcore, Speedcore/Terror (and above), Noizecore, Darkcore, Doomcore, Acidcore and whatever else electronic Hardcore derivative (I guess Crossbreed fits here too). I think it'd be a bit much to make separate threads for these, but do tell me if you disagree.

For those who don't really know the description of these genres, let me take a shot at spelling it out for you:

Hardcore features the well-known distorted kickdrum to make hard pounding beats at a relatively fast pace, packed with energy and moderate up to heavy aggression. Leads are commonly really heavy, but still relatively clear. It is not unusual to have rap in a Hardcore track, which lyrics usually have a violent or deeply angered theme.
Example

Industrial Hardcore could be described as on average slower (but not necessarily slow), and a lot crunchier than normal Hardcore. There is more focus on the general atmosphere, which tends to be a bit more dark, or mysterious. Vocals are rare with Industrial Hardcore.
Example

Frenchcore is quite a big change (at least for sure in scene and following). Frenchcore takes its power from the off-beat distorted bass that follows a (usually) clicky-bouncy kick (note that the kick still sometimes packs a good distorted punch). It is also faster than average Hardcore, hanging around 200BPM. It is not uncommon for Hardcore addicts to hate on Frenchcore, seeing it as Hardcore's weak, younger, disregarded sibling. The general attitude of Frenchcore is carelessly having fun. Take this example (which is arguably the most well-known track - at least from the most well-known producer).

Fast Frenchcore is not at all too different, except that it goes faster. Yea, that easy. It doesn't go below 250BPM (though not often higher).
As far as I know, only a few producers make this genre (I've found Speedcore Dave! to be one of them).
Example (it's, imo, not that good though)

Alright, Speedcore. Speedcore is Hardcore, above 250BPM, below 600BPM. Usual for Speedcore is much, much more power in the attacknoise of the kickdrum. Vocals are not uncommon, though it usually are speech segments, not singing (though it does ever so occasionally happen). Speedcore knows many atmospheres. Most dominant are mocking something and destruction.
Example

Splittercore is mainly the same, except its leaning more towards the destructive atmosphere, and has speeds between 600 and 1000BPM. It is not uncommon for Splittercore tracks to have ambient and/or noise elements.
Example

Extratone is the centerpoint of devastation. Attitude now gains a new sickly doomed atmosphere, as if trying to destroy the listener. BPM is above 1000.
4000BPM example (I want to warn you, this is evil)

Noizecore is kind of the combination of a faster Industrial Hardcore and Noise. I also gotta admit that I know next to nothing about it that I can use to describe it besides this, but boy do I recognize it when I hear it.
Example

Darkcore is Hardcore, but more often than not at relatively normal speeds (not much higher than 160BPM). Kicks tend to not have as much power, but have a focus on darkness. Darkcore is largely a Satanic genre. Vocals are there quite often, if not always, which are dark and destroying, oftenly wanting you dead (not kidding).
Example

Doomcore is Hardcore, only then with an atmosphere that clearly represents doom, and slow speeds (rarely hitting 140BPM, but can go as low as 60BPM). Kicks are long and drawn-out, ambiences tend to be very strong and apocalyptic.
Example (this guy is having a new track out in the near future, he told me)

Right. Acidcore. As the name suggests, it's Hardcore with Acid focus, less on the kick. Not much to say about it really.
Example

Alright then, get to discussing :P

1. So... What about other genres like Breakcore, Happy Hardcore and Trancecore?
2. I thought darkcore belonged to jungle.

1. Yea them too. Didn't cover them for reasons, but do talk about them if you need to. They're *core too.
2. Just like you got a difference between Hardcore (gabba), Hardcore (punk) and Hardcore (Hard Trance), there's a difference between Darkcore (jungle) and Darkcore (gabba).

Just a remember that there's a genre called Slowcore that bucks the hardcore terminology tree. I think it was around before UK Hardcore took off. Likewise there's Hardcore Punk, and a a rock genre that's called Hardcore and then Post-Hardcore that's what some people call true "Emo".

http://rateyourmusic.com/list/rainshine ... _slowcore/
http://rateyourmusic.com/list/nomorehyp ... _hardcore/
http://rateyourmusic.com/list/devildog1 ... core_punk/

But yes just about everything after this with -core means an extension of Hardcore (electronic).

Yea but those aren't derivatives of Hardcore (the gabber one).

Exactly, he was just pointing out that there exist genres that end in -core that aren't derivatives of gabber/rave/whatever. Sort of a not-all-rectangles-are-squares dilemma.

Does breakcore fit into this category? That stuff, and a bit of speedcore, is the extent of my knowledge and involvement in the hardcore scene.

Yep it does. Most all this TBH also fits in a very generic "Breakbeat" parent genre as well.

A few weeks ago, Boris S. (one of the most well-known and respected Schranz/Hardtechno DJ/producers) released a Hardcore track on his Soundcloud, with a kick that is interesting at the very least:

http://soundcloud.com/boris-schalk/hardcore-boris-s-not-from-this

At first I didn't really like it, but eventually I found the kick to be pretty charmy :P
Whaddya think?

EDIT - oh and yes Breakcore fits here.

One true hardcore

Techno posers, stealing names which don't belong to them, tsk tsk.

Anyway, the thread title is problematic because any metalhead would think of metalcore derivatives when they see the title, the proper name isn't *core music, it's hardcore techno. In fact just calling it the techno thread would probably be less ambiguous than the current title.

Thing is, if I'd called it the Techno thread (which I should create too btw), people would expect Techno, Deep/Dub Techno and Tribal Techno. That's not Hardcore at all.

Okay. Alright.
I'm okay.

That track is impossible.
PERFECT ambience, chilling to the bone, epic glitches, and a monstrous devastating industrial kick.
I cannot believe it. So good.

Without any hesitation my favorite Industrial Hardcore track ever.

Listened to the Extratone example... I thought it sounded cute :I

Srsly, it had a not to harsh noise (the kick) and a little cute bell thing. If that's not cute...
I think a better example would be Round Wave Crusher - Born in 1600 (BPM)
Now that's some evil shit!

Very interesting thread.
Personally i listen a lot to Renard happy hardcore / cheesy speedcore alias these days (Quick Brown Fox), and i found some hardcore tracks in the brony fandom but it's interesting to explore the "main" hardcore genres and artists.

So we're like discussing labels and stuff we listen to? Alright.

I mostly listen to crossbreed and frenchcore- both the light, bouncy hardtek/tribecore frenchcore that Exo linked earlier as well as the heavy, raunchy stuff (that's the absolute best yo).

For crossbreed I mostly go to Union Recordings, PRSPCT Recordings, and Digital Plague Records. I've got two super solid frenchcore albums, one off Beat Syndikate and the other also off Digital Plague.

Recently, I've been listening a lot to both Mikromakine and Switch Technique's albums (I got the CDs but now they're available for digital download) which are super cool. Both have a very tribal, darkcore (like the dnb) vibes with the rapid 700bpm runs with the clean kick. Also Bit Reactors just released a sick four track frenchcore EP on Audiogenic Records so I've been giving that a lot of play time.

I'd love to know what everyone else is listening to. I still really need to check out more from The Sickest Squad. I'll be sure to include links to some of the stuff I was blabbing on about.

Well, I know I enjoy the five old releases from the GGM RAW label, as well as a few releases of GGM Digital (Dave! released there too).
Also Supernova Records 005.

I'd love if you can share some of the raunchier heavy Frenchcore. I really lack that in my library.

So now I'll proceed to post teh beatz.

So far Starving Insect (Doomcore), Peter Kurten (Crossbreed), and especially Sei2ure (Crossbreed) have been AWESOME. Raum 107 (and Starving Insect a little) was the only one I've seen truly enjoy his music so far, but sadly the sound during his set was utter shite.

Oh, and I'm at Cubic Nomad now, and god is he rocking it!

Oh oh, and I bought a NORAD shirt and the two present Embrionyc CDs :D the limited edition Dark Descent shirts were sold out, just as the posters ;3;

And I'm pretty surprised by seeing all these people wearing Fifth Era and Darkside shirts :D

EDIT - oh and I've stood 1 meter away from whare Embrionyc was raving during Starving Insect :D
Might post pics of stuff later.
