Started with a sketch, created the geometry, projected UVs, created textures, rigged it for animation, realized my proportions were WAY off, went back to the modeling stage, re-did my UVs, re-did the rigging, created ~30 blendshapes for facial expressions, spent 2 months figuring out Maya nHair, created a hat, and made a bump map for the hat.
Total time spent: ~4.5 months (2.5 months if you take out the time learning nHair). It was a lot of work, but if I decided to redo the same thing again, I could probably do it in less than a month, simply because I'm familiar with the program now.
I was so fascinated with the idea that you could take a simple 2d sketch, and bring a full character to life. It sort of feels like you're playing god in a way, giving life and soul to a character from the ground up. I wanted to create an avatar that looked like she was hanging over the edge of the avatar box, with a, "Hey you!" kind of expression.
Tada!
