Freewave's Genre of The Day Exploration

This isn't a forum for specifically talking about production or posting your own music, but it is a place to talk about the music you are listening to.

Glad you're enjoying it. We can always revive it if there's interest and new stuff people want to see. It just seems to run out of juice and interest from time to time.

I had to give up reading before I got there yesterday, since my brain was just too full :D

And thank you for not getting EBM and Aggrotech mixed up. A lot of people are tagging their cyber-industrial songs as EBM, which annoys the living bejeezus out of me.

Crabcore? (It's a thing, apparently)

All of the above <3

I could do Schranz though if people want me to. It'll be a bit different since I'm different, but I don't care and I hope you do too.

Also @Exo is this becoming a thing where everyone writes about certain genres in particular, or is Freewave still gonna be the sole author?

Well pretty much what i have been doing is looking at the masterlist and then finding the matching rym box set for the request and then taking the best of the box and putting that here and linking to the rest for more. If people want to follow that process for sets we do have that's great. Or you can do the same formatting (3+ classic examples) for ones we don't have and put them here too (anyone who wants to make a FULL new list for any genre ON RYM I'd be happy to add any missing genres as there's always a few.) Feel free step in and talk about exotic genres that don't have a rym box set.

Vaporwave and Psytrance hould have been posted already (i THINK) and Math Rock set is on rym. Would love to see a Neurofunk set although there is a big master drum & bass set that does talk a little about the subgenres. Just remember what we do on rym box set is look at who was there when the genre formed during the formation years, not years after when it mainstreamed (although we try not to overlook that either if we can).

Slowcore? Do you mean Doomcore or is Slowcore actually a thing? :P

Oh and I get the message.
I'll do a short bit on Schranz if you will (at a later time).

I actually have no idea how to start or what it should be like but I'll just do something

Slowcore is actually a thing. It has absolutely nothing to do with Hardcore tho....

"Slowcore is a subgenre of alternative and indie rock. The music of Slowcore artists is generally characterized by downbeat melodies, slower tempos and minimalist arrangements. With its roots in the late '80s it crystallized as a distinct genre in the early and mid '90s under the helm of critically acclaimed groups such as Red House Painters, Low and Codeine, despite remaining little-known to this day. An alternative name for the genre is 'Sadcore', though some argue that the terms describe different, albeit extremely similar, styles.

One of the figureheads of the genre, Low, have claimed that their quiet and minimal style came about in part as a rebellion against the loud and aggressive alternative rock and grunge sounds popular in the early '90s. This attitude was mirrored in that the band are said to have reacted to noisy and inattentive audiences by turning the volume down.

The genre was arguably shaped by a variety of musical influences which made it distinct from Indie Rock, including the progressive Indie Rock / Folk Rock genre-blending of American Music Club (popularly considered the earliest example of the genre); the minimal and gloomy tendencies of such Folk luminaries as Leonard Cohen; the slow, skeletal Post-Punk found on the likes of The Cure's 'Faith' and 'Pornography' albums; and the shimmering atmospheres and melodies of Dream Pop. In turn, its influence can be seen in the development of the Post-Rock genre. "

Full List

Codeine - 'Loss Leader' from The White Birch (1994)
"Codeine are one of the better known bands of the genre, and this track is perhaps the best example of their way of flipping between gentler sections and more alt-rock heavy sections."

Spoiler video:

Red House Painters - 'Katy Song' from S/T (1993)

"I pop for 'Katy Song' over 'Medicine Bottle' because it's both slightly more popular and slightly more representative of their style as a whole (the latter is super depressing, and worth checking out). This track displays singer / songwriter Mark Kozelek's trademark unhealthy obsession with women and nostalgia. This album (self-titled, but known as 'Rollercoaster' to distinguish it from another self-titled release ('Bridge')) and the prior EP are both considered Slowcore classics, rightly so. But this album is slightly more diverse, and Kozelek would move away from the style in future releases, whilst remaining perhaps the most iconic figure of the genre."

Spoiler video:

Low - 'Over the Ocean' from The Curtain Hits the Cast (1996)

"This, 'Shame', and 'Words' are all early fan favourites, and all had videos made. I pop for this one for reasons that can be found below. Low are one of the figureheads of the genre, and can't be neglected in any serious overview. I have a passion for their first three albums, and this is from their third. After this they would gradually move away from the genre, though they still retain prominent elements of it in their sound."

So I know this topic died a LONG time ago. I kind of a took more of a hiatus from RYM Box Set Project when I was most active making pony music and recently its been more of the opposite. I cleaned up the Playlists List so it better reflected what spotify and youtube playlists we have online (about 200 of our 500 genres already featured). Also put together a tumblr if you'd like to have a new genre hand delivered every day. Either there will be interest or there won't. Anyway feel free to follow if you'd like to check it out.
