If that quote in your sig from The Timelord the KLF one-shot Dr. Who theme side project or is it actually from an unrelated Dr. Who quote? Just curious and too lazy to use google. :D

Yeah, it was the KLF. From their book, "The Manual: HOW TO HAVE A #1 THE EASY WAY"

It's a completely hilarious deconstruction of modern music, and well worth a read. Link.

Like, wow, this site has changed so much since I was gone, and who else suddenly became a mod? And I'm honestly wondering, was I ever considered to be a mod, and are there reasons to me always being rejected? Not trying to sound like I'm complaining or anything, just curious... I try my best to be helpful

Anyways, what is your opinion over modern dubstep and older dubstep

inb4 this turns into an argument with elitist cunts Facade sorry telling us that it's not "dubstep", it's "brostep" and it's the worst thing to crawl onto the earth's crust.

Grooves, everyone is constantly talking about how music is going down the toilet. Like even Daft Punk jumped that bandwagon, okay? I know that when it comes to analysis on the history and social aspects of music that you are the expert, which is in addition to you being mature and professional on the forums (QUITE UNLIKE MY SAD REPUTATION) the reason why you are a mod here of course, SO I ask of you what you personally think of the current trend of musicians and people crying the end of the world for music as they fear the industry's recent morph from artistic roots into vapid product?

His maturity exceeds ours. But it would indeed be great to start up a conversation on the topic of commercialism of music. Or, that's what I interpreted what you said, CF.

I think that commercialism of music is just fine and dandy. If you don't like that large record companies are making pop music that you don't like and paying radio stations to play it, then you can bitch and whine all you want, but as long as those record companies have money rolling into their pockets and buying them Ferrari's, it ain't gunna stop. I don't even fully see the reason as to why you would think it necessary to complain. The commercialism of music isn't stopping you from producing whatever music you want, listening to whatever music you want, nor is it stopping other people from making the music that they and you like. There are still plenty of places where you can find the music you want to listen to, and if you think the radio is the only place to find new music, allow me to introduce you to: UFK, Soundcloud's explore feature, Beatport, Monstercat, Dubstep.NET as well as a whole plethora of other <musicgenre>.NET's, LastFM, Pandora and the list goes on and on.

Ok, rant aside, I think that some of the commercialized music that you hear on the radio is pretty good. Well mixed, well mastered, well composed, but the biggest problem is that the topics the songs are about have been worn down too far.

But seriously, I can understand 4th and Kyoga being mods, but I would appreciate knowing the thought process behind making DG a mod, given his history as far as I'm concerned, on this site. I'm not the only one, either:

I think the major difference between vintage dubstep and modern is the use of the term "dub". Dubstep originally came around with a HEAVY dub influence- delays, reverb, reggae-influence, zero emphasis on drop, etc... and eventually involved into something a bit more drop-oriented. Not that there's anything wrong with that. Groove-based dubstep can be just as fun as dropstep/brostep. Now, personally, I don't think the term brostep is derogatory? Since when has the idea of being bros been something to deride? Regardless, I think the separation is much like that between Jungle and DnB, or Disco and House. At the end of the day, to the average tone-deaf idiot, it's all just techno, so balls to it. Let's all just party and be buds, why not.

If anybody thinks the commoditization of music is a new thing, they have another thing coming. The idea of music as property owned by corporations and record labels is an idea that stretches back to sweeping changes enacted in 1974. For those seeking details, feel free to read FREE CULTURE by Lawrence Lessig. Appropriately enough, it's free!

The good news is today artists have more and better ways of marketing their music than ever before. Between Bandcamp, Etsy, and just about a million other online distributors, there is literally no shortage of clever, well-crafted music to enjoy, and the volume of people actively seeking out those sounds grows every day. There are still big changes that need to occur to ensure our works remain free (again, PLEASE READ FREE CULTURE), but we live in a time of relative freedom as creators. We are not slaves to radio stations who exploit us for payola, or to greedy labels, or to clubs hawking pay to play schemes. There is still work to be done, but anyone who thinks there has been a decline is a luddite at best and deliberately ignorant at worst.

Blue Yeti microphone. Stereo for spot recording, cartoid for vocals, and omnidirectional when I'm recording a band. I find it has superior clarity when I'm looking for it, but also has the warmth to take a band and make a really appealing garage rock sort of tone.

I get samples from three places, generally. Freesound for drum loops/field recordings, youtube for movie quotes/sound FX (Normally you can find whatever line you happen to be looking for in isolation, and then use one of the many youtube to mp3 web services) and in the rare occasion I'm actually looking for MLP sounds, I can normally turn to this website for pretty clean versions. When it comes to samples, share and share alike. I also grab stems when I can find them, and renard has some pretty decent stems on his website?

I like sampling a lot from things that influence me personally. A song I'm doing right now samples Gaff from Blade Runner shouting "It's too bad she won't live- but then again who does?". It's simple, but means something deep, I think.

I know I'm a little late to say anything, but I'd argue that the commercialization and commoditization of music goes back even farther than you are saying; even into pre-baroque periods, where the troubadours and trouveriers would frequently be "hired" (and seek to be hired) by land-lords and royalty for the express purpose of private entertainment (usually with a few extra chains around the ankles and perhaps a "suite" that locks from the outside). Even churches since the collapse of 1st form Gregorian Chants (and the good-ol'-days of not actually needing words) would use their choirs as a symbol of wealth rather than as a symbol of how much they cared about music.
---

Anyway, the question I was going to ask was: "How do you feel about Wagner's opera's?" One of my friends and I were in a debate/argument whether they were "high-art" or simply "entertainment".

Well, regardless of how you actually feel about it, I got the impression that you thought that way of modern dubstep, just by the way you made multiple remarks indicating that you thought we shouldn't be calling modern dubstep "dubstep" and rather something else. You also blatantly insulted modern dubstep and then proceeded to tell people that you didn't hate it. Lol.

Alright, since when can high art not be entertaining? I think that's a very strange premise to begin with.

That said; Wagner. Kind of a dick.

I was arguing that Wagner's work was simply meant to be entertaining in the same way that a TV show is today. Not that high-art can't be entertaining. : P

I would consider a lot of the television in production today to be art? Game of Thrones, Beneath the Dome, Breaking Bad... Etc. I think we might have differing opinions on what constitutes high art. In fact, I don't think there is such a thing.

Take Shakespeare's work. During his day, his plays were regular debuted in the Globe Theater, a shithole so filthy the floor literally consisted of decades of discarded nutshells. That said, he's commonly considered to be the greatest english-language writer ever. The quality of music or narrative has no bearing on the class or volume of people consuming said media. I personally believe the idea of "high art" was one constructed by a snobbish upper-class in an attempt to stratify art and therefore is an idea that is meaningless, and harmful to creators. Is Watchmen a piece of art on the scale and depth of Hamlet? Verily I say, "Totes".
