What do you do when your mind goes derp when working?

Postby BronyMetalMix » 02 Jul 2013 13:25

Hey everypony, I wanted to know. What do you all do when your mind goes blank while working on a song? I personally found my mind seems to do that alot but I never figured out a good way to fix it. My mind seems to just go derp when I make songs. Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Note Wise.

Usually I either (save a copy of my project and then) do something completely unexpected - throw in a different chord sequence, new instrumentation, whatever.
Often I find that when I feel held back it's because I've added something that doesn't have much potential and I don't have the willpower to delete it, so there's that.
Otherwise, take a break. Do something else. If you concentrate on a creative thing too long and too hard your brain just ends up getting squashed against it and can't get its juices out so you need to step away and let your brain expand again before having another go.

I see what ya guys mean, For me, for some reason I find myself waiting until I got that "Ah-ha!" moment. That seems to have been the way my brain has worked even though I know it's not the best way. Each song I make I seem to get stuck on then after a while I just get that "I got it!" moment in an instant. It's very strange. BTW: Nice to see ya again Kyoga. :P

Switch projects.

I am always working on multiple projects. If I go blank on one, then I usually switch to another one.

Nothing.

If I realize a project's not going anywhere, I stop working on it. If I push it, it'll sound forced and be a pile of shit, so I abandon it once I'm off my roll.

I find them later, listen to them, and if I have a good idea for them, I'll work on them again.

I do what Kyoga said.

If I'm not doing anything productive, I should at least keep learning stuff for when the muse is with me next.

So today at work my mind derped and it was embarrasingly funny. I was scraping glue off of the board that we make sandwiches on at Burger King (don't ask me where the glue came from), and some of the glue shreds got into the ingredients so without thinking I asked a co-worker, "How much caulk would you like in your sandwhich?" wrong thing to say out loud.

Relating to musics, I just alt tab and play League of Legends.

I slur words when I go blank. Which is pretty inconveniant when you work in a studio.

"so you gotta compresisificon this part?"

"...yes"
