What genre is this?

Postby svett89 » 20 Apr 2013 04:23

I recently made a remix of Smile:

The problem is that I have no idea how different electronical genres are determined. Like... What should I call it when I submit it to different places? Is it Trance? Chiptune? I honestly have no idea.

Any help would be most appreciated. :-)

I'd consider it as undefined Electronica or maybe IDM. For Trance it's far too minimalistic.

Besides that there are a few musical mistakes and the mixdown is rather bad.

When in doubt, call it Electronica. It can pretty much be used as an umbrella term for any electronic music you can't tag a genre to.

I wouldn't personally say the track's minimalism is what makes it not trance, since trance is fundamentally minimal. That said, it's still not particularly trancey. It doesn't really have a hypnotic or driving rhythm, which is central to a trance tune.

I'd put it as somewhere in the interstices between IDM, chiptune, casiocore and anthem house. It'd probably be anthem house if the mixdown had a more clear intent to be danceable. (On that point, you probably want to sidechain the kick to the bass so that the kick punches through more, just to start with.)

Triptune sounds like a cool genre name.

You and I have totally different definitions of trance. *sigh*

I'm tired of so many people stuffing for decades every kind of music into "trance". Be it Scooter or psy-shit or whatever "spacey with a kick" track of the month they'll find.

Spacey with a kick is what Trance has always been. "Psy-shit" is typically closer to the original ethos of the genre than most of the stuff you would label trance, judging by the mix in your sig. Just listen to this track from 1990.

This isn't Triptune. This is Dark Psy. I think we may still have something.
