I Think This Is The Right Place...

I'm trying to learn to do impressions...and they aren't that great except for AJ (simply because AJ, Fluttershy, and Rarity are my best...)...I was just wondering if there was some sort of trick to it...:/ I think this is the right topic because I want to learn to sing in this voices maybe, and the other one that seemed appropriate was locked...if this isn't the right place I would be grateful if someone pointed me in the right direction. Thanks!

Not too many voice actors here. Don't know what i can recommend other then study the voices, their phrasing of words (AJ-deep south, Rarity-prissy, RD-studly), and simply try to emulate that. Helps if you're a girl if you're trying to do impressions of their voices too. ;)

Freewave: Of course I'm a girl. ^^* I wouldn't be doing girl voices if I wasn't...:/ Thank you for the advice. I do intend to use it soon. Perhaps I could even help with acting or singing maybe?

Also, when I do actually get good, do I need a specific type of audio driver or microphone to be able to record my voice nice and clear?

Most condenser mics and pre-amps will do fine.
I personally use a Blue Spark Mic and an M-Audio Mobile Pre. The Blue Spark works great, but I have had some issues with the Mobile Pre.

Also be sure to get a pop filter. Its quite irritating to hear air pops in recordings. Especially when the recorder is using a good mic.

JSynth: Thank you so much for the advice...maybe if I ever get money (if it costs anything) I could get it. Eventually I'll be able to do things effectively and perhaps contribute, but for now...practice. ><

It would be helpful if you could link us to some samples of you attempting to VA as any of the ponies that you said you were best at.

But imma say this quick, if you can't sound like them, you can't sound like them. I haven't looked too much into it, but I'm pretty certain there's no way to morph your voice into their voice via software unless your voice is already really close to theirs. So go ahead, record a sample of you saying something that perhaps AJ would definitely say, then link us to it so we can listen, then critique.

Just a few tips now: Listen to the pitch of the characters voice, try to match it. If you can match it, you're part of the way there. Replicate the accent, and then you're real close. It's really difficult to make yourself sound like somebody else if you don't already sound somewhat like them.

itroitnyah: I honestly think the only ones I may have trouble with are Rarity and RD (cause RD is a little scratchy with her voice and Rarity has an accent...maybe Pinkie too cause she's loud and...how can I practice a loud voice in a home full of people?), out here in the country I'm positive I have the AJ down, and I can sing in Twilight's and Fluttershy's voice...it's just the normal talking. And oh I wish I could record for you guys, but sadly I can't do that without a camera or a mic...though I do practice somewhat daily...when I have the ability I certainly will record myself and post it somehow.
