Edit: Decided to release it, couldn't sit on it any longer ;)
Ayyy.
The drum pattern changing on every other beat at the beginning is cool. I love the japanese style vocal shouts!! That snare sound needs more resonance on it's (well, it's most resonant point i guess) and more low end, the drum sounds all need to have a place in the EQ that they sit in comfortably, far apart from anything else, having their own strong frequency band to make sure nothing is lost.
There needs to be a louder more interesting bass to go with the lead. I appreciate the uniqueness of the idea however and the overall energy and style the tune has.
Now that was fun. The intro seemed kinda dead to me, I wasn't convinced that the rhythm motif could develop...and then somehow the piece is transformed into a funfair of...I dunno. Almost like a mashup between SGaP's Pinkie Pie Swear and the type of brutal techno pieces we used to hear from Alex S. It's clearly experimental so I'm not going to be too critical, I can see some features (like the way you handled pony samples) transferred to more mainstream titles. This review sounds like I'm not too keen but I really, really like it, I'm just not sure why. Maybe that's a good thing?
No idea how this'll sound on your equipment because my mastering skills aren't really up to scratch. My monitors (headphones in this case) are fairly low-end as well, so there's that.
The track Ponevolution has a nice solid sound design, and the mixing/mastering isn't that bad at all. All in all, I'd say it is a great track :) My signature is my newest track "Rage". It does have a bit of some "offensive language" in it, so be warned. This is probably my most heavy and filthiest track yet.
These are good sounds. I sorta picture most of them as being similar style to a lot of the sounds you hear in Portal 2. I can't really offer much critique, though.
@Sexorcist
The mix is very muddy, and could definitely use a lot of work. There are some synths that are significantly quieter than others. The kick and snare are also pretty weak in the mix. The song is overall pretty boring. It's also very repetitive.
I'm under the impression that you took inspiration for the drop from either Knife Party or Skrillex, but I don't remember which of either of their songs has that style drop.
Decent sound design, but the texture seems kinda thin, even through the sections with percussion. Some of the instruments could have benefited from using a wider range of notes and denser chords, I think, and the binary structure means the piece lacks direction and, at least ATM, feels like a WIP.
The mixing is good though, and if your aim is to slowly improve with these 'practise' mixes, rather than do any full-scale 'production-quality' mixes yet, then you have progressed since the Sugar Rush piece of almost two years ago.
As for me: my intention is to abandon Logic 9 and it's stock instruments, as well as shift away from mundane EDM. I intend to make a sort-of 'promenade pop' piece, but in the meantime I have a short solo-piano comp with ideas I might use later on.
@itroitnyah:Like Paspie said,it's decent but the track lacks something but i can't find out what is...
@Paspie:First-off,it totally lacks of dynamics & it gives some empty feeling(but if that was what you were going for,nevermind.) BUT this one was pretty good despite this whole lacks.
I like the composition, but it needs more instruments imho. Like, I would totally love to listen to a slower Orchestral Version of this. I hope something like this is planned :) Can't say anything about the mixing at this point...
@Skull
I like the touch of it, reminds me of Yuyoyuppe, except you could actually make it maybe faster or a bit more exciting. It being ambient doesn't mean it needs to follow the slower sound only. Otherwise I like it a lot, the tune got me and I can't hear any bad mixing so far! Could be my speakers though... Still a nice work :3
Okay, here wo go, Liquid Dubstep (Chillstep) Remix of mine:
That snare needs a lot more resonance around the 1k mark (or somewhere where you get a sort of pitch out of it) At the moment there's just too much high end and it doesn't go with the geetar. The strings are nice but need a boost at the highest possible frequency. Like the choir. Could really do with some lyrics but i can't tell if it's finished or not. The moment of silence is really cool at 3minutes but it's far too sudden, lead into it with an ickle crash or something....
@Dreamland200 I'm not too familiar with schranz but whatever
-the amen break at the beginning is pretty cool (i kind just really like the amen break) -the little arp thing that comes in at ~30s lacks presence so you should do something with that -the little "dodo" clips are fun but kinda gets a little repetitive -I would say the drums sound kinda muddy but my headphones are broken so take that as you will
I too am completely unfamiliar with the genre. I have no idea what's going on half the song, to be honest. The snare sounds like it could be louder, but once again I'm not familiar with the genre so I don't know if that's the way it's supposed to be or if my ears are deceiving me and there isn't a snare. The little girl/boy voice that you have spliced throughout the song sounds really off at some parts, that's about all the critique I can give.
@Ohffy
That sounds really cool. I'm not sure how I'm supposed to critique it tbh. There isn't anything I can say.
> feels bad bcuz cant critique other peoples work but expects people to critique his
I need advice on how I can make the drop more dramatic. I feels like a real lackluster. The risers also seem to not give enough tension, sort of an empty suspense if you get what I mean. Then the sound design. I feel like some of the synths might not be working together very well which is just a minor part of the issue. My biggest concern is with the wobble bass in the drop, how should I modulate that? It seems like I can't figure out how everybody else can modulate their basses and make them sound good, so I would love tips on that. I currently have an LFO on the pitch and cutoff which I increase or decrease either of the modulation effects of either LFO to achieve the wobbles, which I feel works but I'm not really doing it correctly. And then of course if anybody has tips on how I could improve composition or mixing or both, they would be strongly appreciated.
I should also point out that I haven't completely mixed it. I've done some quick volume mixing, but I haven't sidechained, reverbed or EQed anything yet, other than in-synth effects.
So far, the WIP has a good composition, nice instruments you used and all. Hope the finished product comes out nice. :3 *btw what samples seem off on my previous song?
Anyway, I went ahead and made this weird song i made in 2 hours because I was bored, and it's non-pony for once under the XIL alias.
Still needs a lot of work in terms of processing, and mixing. but overall it's sounding kinda cool. Sorry it's not really my thing so can't comment any more
I NEED A GOOD NAME FOR THIS TRACK! Suggestions welcome and very much appreciated!

I really like the ambient vibe in the beginning, it set the moods for the entire track, not really sure about that change in 1:00 though, without the heavy reeverb pads the song kinda gets dry. Overall i like it, it sounds clean and i love what you did with the vocals and pads, it just that i am not sure about the direction it took after the first minute.

An intro song for a collab album we are working with a group of friends, what do you think c:?
Wow, that was really well done. The bells have a real nice blend of natural feel but a synthetic sort of sound that mixes really well. The bit where it drops the just piano is a bit too abrubt, and it feels like an intro to a larger song, not a standalone intro track. Maybe if it segued into another song it would work a bit better, but as a standalone it falls short just a little bit. *********************************************** https://soundcloud.com/overlord-of-darkness-1/run-remix
Nice! Sounds like boss music you would find in an indie game (chiptuney leads on top of rather non-chiptuney drums). I would say add variation, it tends to get repetitive with just the two sections calling and answering back and forth.
Art of Doing Science: Hey, looks like it's your first posting on the forum, welcome! seems to be an influx of people today, p cool
as for the track itself, right off the bat, i can't exactly make out what exactly those vocal samples are saying. now, when you use long vocal samples such as those, with dialogue, it's important to know where in the song, structure-wise, you're putting them to make it intelligible to your audience. a good example of properly mixing (both technically and in music theory) the two, vocal samples and music, together, is "Internet Friends" by Knife Party. judging by your synth work, i'm sure you're familiar with them, but that song itself does a masterful job of bringing forward its samples where it's important; at the very beginning ("come now"), the backing beat is run through a high-pass filter so that the lower frequencies don't make the vocals muddy or anything like that. Likewise, the vocals return at a comparatively quiet midsection of the song, again making those the star. In this mix you have, it seems you've done the opposite: your song starts rather bass-heavy right out the gate, with thick, low synthwork. Not only that, but the sample seems to have a liberal dose of delay effect on it. You certainly know what you're doing, judging on the whole song, but I'd dial back on those two aspects if I were you.
Aside from that fairly easy but extremely important fix, i'd also like to add that the drums have been pushed too far back in the mix. in general with electronic dance musics you want the beat to be at the forefront of your mix, but it's drowned out here by your (admittedly good) synthwork, especially after the drop. Composition is decent for a Halloween-style song, and I particularly enjoyed the area from 3:45 onwards, particularly the dnb breakdown you tried out briefly, that part was sweet! also liked how you made "love is in bloom" a sample, it somehow worked pretty well. however, overall in the wubwubwub drop thing, your synths seem to be overlapping with each other. for complex drops and glitchy sounds, that's a fairly big nono, as it prevents you from getting a nice, crisp, clean sound. (muffoxx suggests trying out nixing reverb altogether to give more impact to glitch-type tracks, though i wouldn't suggest that for Halloweeny, spoopy themed musics) there's also one synth pad thingy, i think it's run through a phaser or flanger, some similar effect, but it sounded weirdly cheesy and did not fit the vibe of the track at all, so if i were you i'd get rid of that i guess..but the structure and the sectioning off sounds like a complete song, it has a decent flow and the music actually goes somewhere, the effects on the sample after the drop are well-executed, just mess with your levels and try to make it crisp, and you've got a p good track! hope that wasn't too overwhelming, just wanted to make sure these things were fixed bc they're not too difficult to pull off once you're aware of them!
OuTbREaK, same applies to you about the drums! they're there, in a double time dubstep fashion, but just barely!? perhaps try sidechaining your synths as they're tending to just wash over everything rn. the snare in particular could be soo much juicier, the thing is sorely missing that :c in terms of composition, though, i do agree with AoDS here ye.. but it's an improvement upon the original imo haha gud
Oh man, I recognize that fuckbed sample from a flume song or some shit! Although its pretty cool, I feel its a bit overrused in this piece. I really like the stereoeffect done with the hats. I feel a bit of the lead at like 0:57 needs to be a little bit louder. This is like really cool and I hope you finish it.
Awesome track! Really chill, lovely vocal pads and stuff. The hats sound a bit too dead centre though; maybe put one or two individual hits hard left/right to spice up the stereo field? Pan other stuff as well. It's like you put in a stereo widener but there's still not enough stuff in the sides. It's only a really minor thing though; it took me a while to come up with that because everything else is great.
Ryanlauph wrote:https://soundcloud.com/neurophonicdnb/warp I never really make house... I'm a DnB kinda guy. So... advice would be greatly appreciated!
The first thing that's sticking out to me is that kind of plucky sound in the intro. It sounds like it has somewhat of a base note to the sound, regardless of how slight it may be, and it seems out of key or something. I don't know what it is about the sound, but it doesn't fit in right. I think that kind of sound would work, but something about this specific one is off to me.
Once the drop hits, though, that plucky business is right in place.
I'd suggest replacing that lead with something a little less bright, though, idk. Maybe cut out some of the upper harmonics, at least? It doesn't fit with the neuro bass that well.
With the drop in mind now, I think the melodic parts of the song are too melodic. Judging from your neuro sound design and the composition of the drop, you're quite familiar with neurofunk and the other neuro genres. Try to figure out what makes melodies in those songs work, I guess, and see how to apply those to here? That intro just doesn't sit right with me.
I started this last night and, for whatever reason, was so unbelievably motivated that I'm almost at the point I'd consider it finished. Would definitely appreciate constructive criticism.
Specifically, I'm torn on the first drop. I can't decide if tech house is supposed to be monotonous enough that what I have is fine, or if I should vary up the riff a bit. I have "producer's ear", too, as I've been working on this for hours straight, so some suggestions would be nice.
Ten points to whoever figures out the biggest inspiration behind this track.
Now Nyxus Soundcloud Genres of choice: basically just EDM Strengths: Compressing the shit out of already compressed stuff Weaknesses: All that other stuff you do in music
@Dr. Plague I must say I'm not a big fan of house and that kind of stuff, but I must also say I do appreciate some variations. When a house, techno, whatever else has some variation, I appreciate a lot more... And I'm probably not the only one. Buut, listening to your song, I don't think it actually needs much more variations in the riffs, maybe a little, but nothing to worry too much. So if you want, in my opinion, you can consider your song done! ^-^
Well, for mine, I would like some advice in this one, it's a hip-hop song, but I'm mostly looking for advice in the mixing part 'cuz I have a loooot to learn about this. ^-^ Btw, it's in Brazilian Portuguese, but there is a (bad) translation in the description, even though most of the jokes are completely off in English...
@TheSkullX2 It's a nice take on metal with some industrial bits and a cool riff. The biggest problem is that it's REALLY repetitive. It gets kinda boring and it would sound much better with some variety. Also, the screech near the end is a bit harsh on the ears. For an example of a song that you might wanna listen to in order to get a feel for how to make it less boring, try Corrosion by Bronyfied. You can find the original on his Bandcamp for free.
Really like what you did with the reverb and the drums... but if the whole thing is one track, then I think the transitions are too abrupt. I want to see how the various sections link together: 0.00-1.36, 1.37-2.48; the other transitions are fine. At least maybe a quick reverse hit before the next section begins; it scared me a bit the first time I listened (though probably because I had it on quite loud).
If that's the kinda effect you're going for (scaring the shit outta someone), then fine!
