<pony><original> Lyra (Ft. Skar)

Postby Legendary Emerald » 17 Jul 2012 18:57

First off, hello! This is my first post here. I'm an amateur music writer, and for the past few months I've been working on My Little Pony based songs. I just released my first finished track today, and I'd like to see what you think of it. Advice for the future would be helpful.

From youtube description:
This is the first song I'm officially releasing off of what I plan to be a 5 track EP. I'm just starting off as a brony musician, but I hope to entertain and to please!

Lyra is my favorite background pony, and when thinking about characters I wanted to write songs for, she was one of the first to come to mind. This was the third song that was written and composed, but I'm releasing it before the others since it is the only song with vocals recorded.

Which reminds me, I could use a singer or two for my other tracks that I have sitting on the back burner. I can do a lot on the creation end by myself, but my voice has been known to summon cockatrice. Just shoot me an email if your interested, and I'll link you to all the instrumentals, as well as the samples recordings I did.

Music & Lyrics: Legendary Emerald

Vocals: Skar ( http://www.youtube.com/channel/UC0G3kScBqX9o7HbNqhrPI8Q ) - This guy is awesome!

Sound Balancing: Cleveland Rock ( http://www.youtube.com/user/RockVonCleveland ) - Also pretty cool; doesn't do anything pony related.

The lyrics are a bit hard to understand, but it's a good song for a starter. Really good for a starter. You aren't supposed to be this good for a starter! Have you been making music previously?

Drums are mixed really low, and aren't very well defined. They sound like they need some EQ and compression.

It may be a conscious decision, but your enunciation is very slurred, and like itroitnyah said, it's hard to understand you.

Thanks. I'd made some songs in the past, though they're nothing I'm eager to talk about or show off. I actually left music creation for a long period of time, and pony is what inspired me to start again.

Thanks. Also, I love your name. Pretty sure I recognize it, so I might have heard one of your tracks before. :D

I'm not familiar with mixing, so I handed that job over to a friend of mine who said he was familiar with it. He did a better job than I could have done, but he's not a professional. It could be the drum loops themselves' problem, too, which would be my fault. I'll try to monitor this closer in the future.

Also, I'm not the singer. That'd be Skar. He was one of the first people to try singing for one of my songs, and I think that overall he had a good voice for the track. His slightly slurred delivery worked well with the semi-laid back tone that I was going for, I think, and his take on chorus' melody was light-years better than my own.

Also, he was dealing with a pretty crappy mic at the time, so a lot had to be done during mixing to make him sound as legible as he does now. He has a new professional grade microphone now, so if I do any work with him in the future, things might turn out a bit better.
