Rules for Music

Postby Makkon » 30 Dec 2011 00:47

-Youtube embeds, direct links, or any other format that is compatible with the board's phpBB code is acceptable.

-Please use external links, we have disabled attachments due to us only having 10 gigs of space. It's easier on the wallet.

-We're implementing a simple tag system, please use these tags in the titles of your threads:

<wip> Work in Progress
<nonpony> Somehow you managed to make a song that has nothing to do with ponies.
<original> Your own original work, not a remix
<remix> A remix of someone else's work. Also applies to remixes of the show. Remixes of your own songs don't need this tag.
<mashup> A combination of several songs in one that go together surprisingly well.
<troll> Not meant to be taken as an honest effort at music.
<parody> A song intended to be a parody or joke of some kind, differs from troll because it could be more than just music, and insinuating that actual effort was put in it's creation.

Some threads are expected to have multiple tags. Threads without <pony> tags are assumed to be non-pony related.

Surely a <NON-PONY> tag would be better suited? We're a community for pony music so I think it's safe to assume most of the songs here will be pony already. Those that differ from the norm should be tagged, not those that keep to it.

I really have to agree with this, especially since these are new changes. :ugeek: the other way around really does the pony community a disservice i would think.+

can i recommend <mixtape> for ... mixtapes?

Not sure if I'm following the logic here, there's the <pony> tag and the <original> tag for good reason. Even if this is a brony community, it's a music community first and ponies second. I feel it's a little silly for a song to be assumed pony until proven otherwise.

Well before the merge a lot of people were using non-pony subject tags for such releases which are the minority of what is released. i think we're in agreement that often there are many original tracks that don't sample, aren't show covers or remixes, but are still influenced by the show in theme or title or in loose imagery. i think its a real dangerous move to say that we should expect that music would be non-pony unless tagged as that erases what MLR is about. Being pony related is what still bring artists here vs anywhere else but yes it's a site for musicans (about pony related and occasionally non-related music)).

Not sure at all what the purpose of the tags are, except to make the collection of thread titles look somewhat sloppy and chaotic and hard to read...

What MIGHT be helpful is instead of a pony/nonpony/mashup tags or whatever are genre tags, so that when people want to come in and help, they'll be able to tell by looking at the thread title whether it's something they might actually be able to give meaningful input on! <Orchestral> is much more indicative of whether or not I want to click on it than something like <pony>

Unless there's some reason you specifically decided AGAINST genre tags.

Just some thoughts but I'm pretty sure I'm right yeah :3

There wasn't a reason brought up opposing genre tags, and I think that's a good idea. Any other thoughts on the matter? This might be a good discussion.

A <PARODY> tag might also be of use.

With genres it's sometimes difficult for people to pin it to one genre, or any genre at all. I say no.

genre tags might clutter the forum. i agree something like orchestral might have a more defined and limited audience but why limit who will look into the thread? if authors want to tag their thread titles with genre tags i don't see why they shouldn't be able to though.

[tag] looks nicer than <tag> especially when lots of threads have it.

Here's my question.
At what point is a song that samples vocals from a show song considered <remix> and not <original>? Is this up to the artist's discretion?

Also I agree that [this] looks neater than <this>.

I also agree with the stuff about the genre tags and that they should still be optional. Also, square brackets do make things look neater and fancey. C:

No point in not putting genre tags if you feel like doing it, but it should NOT be mandatory, or even suggested. It might help people find music they like, but I really don't like pidgeonholing the people that don't want to be confined to certain genres. Or the songs that defy genres.

Does it count as a remix if I dub over someone else's song?

Like *dubstep* over someone else's song? I dunno, that's a good question. Thoughts, anyone?

I don't see how dubbing over someone's song wouldn't be a remix. You're still taking an already-established track and doing your thing with it.

What does remix count as? Like when you use vocals or midis? Or does a rearrangement count as a "remix" as well?

OH, OH, and how about a vocal tag?
I don't like wondering into vocal tracks cus' I'm used to instrumental musik from Turhur arngz.
