[Electro House]Positive Vibes (Update: Released)

Postby AJYoung » 11 Oct 2015 13:39

Hey! Did an electro house song inspired by Make New Friends But Keep Discord. Unfortunately didn't make P@D, but I would like some feedback before I actually release it.

Edit: This has now been released! Thanks for your help :) You can find it here:

Now THIS...this is what I'm talking about!

Solid progression

Solid buildups and sweeps, loving them.

But be careful with the dubstep FX, they tend to take the "house" feel away a little bit. Also, watch when you stack some of those chords on the sawtooth. It seemed like you crowded a 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th in a couple of them. It sort of overloads the chord a little too much.

Other than that, very nice.

Thanks for the advice! Funny though, the Chords are basic triads, but spread across several instrument layers. I do agree they sound muddy though, so I'll work on cleaning that mix up.

Okay. Make sure you set the chords to background instruments like pads and bass leads. You can have a metal sawtooth pad run the chords, but make sure it isn't too loud.

You done good son, you done good!

I tell you, it just got even better! And you even stuck a Emaj7sus4 in there! Awesome!

Really liked what you did to improve this piece.

Now, the only gripe was that there was just a little something missing in between those sawtooth chords, like a little lick or a runaround arpeggiated pattern. Perhaps on that Emaj7sus4, right after, why not try a run around the Phrygian Harmonic Dominant?

Hopefully that last part didn't go over your head...

But anyway, just awesome! Keep it up dude!

Did you utilize compression and pay attention to how any and all time-based effects (reverb and delay) affected the sounds they were on? You have a great composition, the only thing thing holding it back is the mix! This is where your true style shines because you have a chance to really mix the colors of your sounds together!

STEREO LEVELS
Kick - 0% stereo
Clap, Hat, Snare, Etc. - Slight panning, maybe a little amount of stereo (for style) on the clap if you reverb it
Dubstep growl - 25% stereo
Higher floating sounds - Push further than the dubstep growl

PANNING LEVELS
Pan your sounds out more, something to the right, something to the left, give your mix breathing room! There is a lot going on in just one area!

VOLUME LEVELS
I would go through your mix again and solo sounds in to the mix one by one and really make sure that they coincide with each other, if they are muddy or don't translate correctly then focus on your volume, compression, limiting, etc.

In general these are just mixing tips for this song specifically but your composition is great man, you put detail in to that, now you need more detail in the next part!
