<pony><original><orchestral> I Dream In 3/4 Time

Postby Callenby » 15 Mar 2013 21:51

(Working title)

Finally, I have something new to show. And by 'new' I mean structurally almost the exact same thing as what I posted last time, so once again it's in 3/4 (I know other time signatures, I swear!). It kind of unintentionally became a quasi-remake of that.

I've yet to build up a respectable library so I tried to do the best I can with what I have.

I'm not happy with it, but I seem to feel that way about everything I write so for right now I'll just ignore that feeling. Plus I'm starting to get tired of working on this.

The melody keeps going in the same direction of that one song from Pirates of the Caribbean and then not and I finD IT INFURIATING.

Griping aside, this is pretty. I'm not very well educated or versed in composition or anything musical for that matter so this is just an opinion, but I like it. It feels like it could use more before 2:20. Some harmonies in the melody or something, or a counter melody.
It sounds cool dude keep working on it and post it here when it's done.

Sounds really ambient and chill, I like it! It sets a really good mood, and the strings head everything in an ominous direction. I'm glad to hear something in 3/4 too, it's good to hear something that isn't in 4/4 once in a while. I would keep the strings going a little longer before the ending, but that's just my opinion. I really like the whole thing though, sounds like something you'd hear as a movie score or something.

Thank you for your responses, guys. I appreciate it!

@Genkar: When you say to keep the strings going before the ending are you referring to extending the pizzicato part or something else?

@DijiTwitch: It certainly wasn't my intention to infuriate the listener. Yes, I believe I know what you're referring to so I went and heard that song. I can definitely see the likeness, but my impression is that although it's similar at first (without being the same) it then goes off in a completely different direction.

I'm interested to know what everyone thinks, though: Is it too similar, and if so do you have any particular suggestions to change it?

Wait... I was talking about the pizzicato, but now that I'm listening to it again, I like it the way it is. xD

Ah, well, cool then.

I'm still interested in hearing whether or not people think it's too similar to that one song from Pirates of the Caribbean.

And rather than create a new thread I'll probably update this thread when I have something more finalized.

Honestly, both times I listened to it, Pirates of The Caribbean never really came to mind. Even after that being pointed out, it was still only something that was "Yeah, I guess I can hear that." No real distinct connection came to mind for me.

Ha, weird. I was listening and thinking "strings need to come in RIGHT HERE" and then they did. Cool!

So, I think this is really beautiful and awesome. My only real complaints are with dynamics: sometimes, some instruments tend to totally overpower everything, such as that one bell that comes in at 1:56 and especially the choir when it comes in (although this may be an EQ thing). Also, the drastic melody change at about 2:17 is pretty sudden, might be worth going back and making that more gradual if you're not totally sick of working on this yet.

But yes, I love it. Really unique, and I definitely get "dream" vibes from this. Nice job!

Wow, thanks for all the feedback, guys! I feel like the prettiest girl at the dance.*

@Magnitude Zero: I hear what you mean about the melody change. It's jarring, but that's partly intentional. My idea was that with all the full strings sounds and tremolo it seemed like it is building to something huge but actually would then pull back to a disquieting second theme before returning for the payoff. Sort of a bait and switch approach to building and releasing tension. Did any of that come through or do I need to rethink it?

The choir needs an overhaul in general so that will definitely change. But that's fine since it all makes for good practice. Hopefully I can get this thing done by the end of the month.

Okay, hopefully this stupid thing is done. It's not everything I had hoped it would be but I'm just so sick of working on it.

Aha, I know the feeling. Well if it makes you feel any better, it sounds great! I didn't hear a whole lot that needs to be fixed - the drastic melody change I still don't particularly care for, but it's not a big deal really. Mixing is good, composition is beautiful, and I'd really like a download link if you don't mind :P

But of course. I'm flattered! I hope WAV is alright. If not then I can upload pretty much any another file type except MP3, since my version of Cubase very sneakily doesn't allow for that.

I'm sorry you still don't like that part. It's a perfectly legitimate thing to think. Chalk it up to stylistic differences, I guess.

Anyway, hopefully now none of us will have to think about this silly little song anymore.
