But really, how the hell do you get the drums to have that dark, filtered sound? I've tried nearly everything and I just have no idea how.

Do you call that song Hardcore? It's clearly Techno. With a Latin vibe 8-) (I really, reeeaaally like that song :D )

But anyways, I got my submission right here:
https://soundcloud.com/exobasstix/time-for-innovation
BAM! Owned, I win. :P jk

So now I get to choose a next genre. I got a few ones ready, I'll just choose one (that I'm currently into a lot).
I choose: Bassline, aka. Bassline House and Jackin' House. The wiki-page'll explain the characteristics of the genre.
This is not that much of a known genre. It is very wide, as it has a lot of different sounds, of which I will give a few examples (it aren't sounds with a name-tag or anything, but Bassline just has many different sounds). One of the provided examples is the one Wikipedia calls the 'best known' Bassline song. I don't know it myself, and I don't like it either, but it's still Bassline so I'll let you hear it.

Examples of Bassline:
T2 ft. Jodie Aysha - Heartbroken (this is the 'best known' Bassline song. I don't know any song that sounds like this one, but this is still Bassline)
Route94 - Forget The Girl (my favorite of the genre)
Pete Graham & Lorenzo - Windmills
DJ Alex Grand - Businessmen Dancing (this is probably the best example I can provide; it's a 1hr-mix full of Bassline - plus it's my favorite mix ^-^ )

I'm might join in on this in the future if I get the time, and it's a genre I can work with, and if I'm not to occupied with ToastBeard.

Is there some sort of synclisten like tb?

Would you believe me that I was sitting in Astronomy lecture today thinking, "I bet Exo is going to vote for baseline for the next genre" :P

But yeah I'll be totally down for that next week if I've got time. Apparently I've got another computer science project coming up :S

I actually wanted to bring up Epic Trance, but I figured it's too big. So I went for Bassline. 4x4 Speed Garage. An improvement of life. Lol :P

I'll think up some other deadly unknown genres. Recently I've been practising my Extratone skills...

I hope Exo and I aren't the only one's submitting ;D

I'll have mine up soon, just going to let my ears rest before I master. I'm actually really happy with how it turned out. Fucking love this genre lol.

Not submitting this week. Too much work/lack of motivation/inspiration. Maybe next week.

Here's my submission: "FULL THROTTLE"
https://soundcloud.com/hackdsounds/full-throttle

I'm not going to contest Exo's suggestion of bassline for the next genre, but I would like to encourage someone to vote for psytrance down the road.

Thank you OcularInvisible for the inspiration <3

I'm sorry to disappoint you, but that isn't Schranz. It sounds more like normal Hardtechno, and I'm not even sure of that.

So I can't really judge it. It doesn't mean I don't like it (even though it sounds very odd imo).

So the week's passed already. Does that mean that this competition is dead? Or just ignored?

I find this one of the best competition ideas, so I'd be sad to see it die after the first round already.

Let me explain.
Every week, there's a genre that you need to make a track in. With your submission (which you can post in this thread when done) you include a genre that you want for the next week. If your track wins, your genre will be chosen.
Not sure about judging.

Earlier I had a big, biiiig plan to make a website for this, which would include possibility of voting for submissions, a clear display of what's what, a countdown till end of week, submission forms, a system that takes care of informing people which genre to do, automatic posts containing all week details, etc etc etc

Ok. That sound like an INSANE amount of fun because I love genre hopping. We should at least get SOMETHING like this started up. Perhaps start a new thread called "<whatever this is called> 2.0" CptKick you can like add in all the doo hickys and new fangled ideas you youngsters have :P

Its a great idea guys but it really has to take off on mlr first and then in a larger sense for it to really work. It's like a Toastbeard 2.0 so its important you get a "REGULAR" batch of people who to contribute. A weekly schedule though really isn't going to work tho, maybe every other week? Again great idea but be realsitic about what you guys can pull off and how many contributors you REALLY have.

I agree, especially to the "every other week" part.
I don't know exactly about Toastbeard (never really done anything with it), but I want to make this pretty big for sure. We just need to find a way to make this attractive for everyone.

And the Toastbeard 2.0 thing ... I consider this to be a Toastbeard with a twist.
Toastbeard is based on themes. Whatever we're gonna call this (I'm thinking about that) is based on genre. It's a bit less restricting at least, though less inspiring. Though I do think it has potential to drag more attention than Toastbeard in the end.

I'll get to thinking out some details at least.

So, some ideas as to a title:

- Hop The Genre Competition
- Battle Of The Genres
- Genre Galore
- 2genre4hop (nevermind me)

As discussed above, that fits only if we decide to go with "weekly" anyways.
Which would be difficult, at least for the moment. I really like the idea of doing this every other week.

Just to let you know. I had before wanted to revive this. It's even been on my to-do list (huge white-board in middle of my room) for all these months.

And I had an idea for it, way back then.
Right now, the idea is to aim at productions in a certain genre. But why stop at just productions? Why not DJ mixes as well? We could make separate categories, like Toastbeard has WAT and ZIQ (once again, dunno might be mistaken), we could do separate rounds for both Producers and DJs. It'd pull even more attention.

I think the best thing to do if you're serious about this, is to set up a team of people who want to help, and make a Skype group for said team to discuss things. Then you can go from there.
