Challenge: Exploring new dimensions of music

Postby Sugarholik » 27 Aug 2011 13:15

Got this idea while following a discussion regarding the limitations of western music...
...Let's brake them!

You have been hereby challenged to do a song! However, purpose is to favor time signatures, tunings and whatnot which are alien to music coming out of the radio today.
You should try for example:
-quarter tones
-any other time signature than 4/4
-polyrhytmics
-anything weird you can possibly imagine

The point of this is to learn and evolve. This is not a contest!

Anypony can participate at any time.

Your song can be either pony or non-pony. Genre and style is up to you.

For the sake of keeping things organized, please PM me a link to your song and i will embed it on this post with your username on top of it. I'd prefer soundcloud embeds because youtube can be very slow sometimes and soundcloud player is much smaller. Either one is accepted however.
I check this site daily, so your submission should be here within 24 hours.

Rest of this thread is for questions, advice, general discussion etc. related to subject.

Ready! Set! Go nuts!

apparently it's about to get nasty. would start rightaway but my psp doesn't allow for any kind of music making, let alone quarter tones

I do this on a regular basis with my non-pony works...(aka music I enjoy writing for University!)

This be my fancy pants piece played by a professional chamber orchestra! There's a few quarter tones here and there, but non-conventional harmony is everywhere! Polyrhythms are everywhere! So on and so forth...enjoy!

I have far more unconventional stuff in the works though, so when I get round to recording them, I'll put them on MLR...

As a reminder to everypony: I'd like to have all songs on the first post so they can be found easily. So posting embeds yourself won't be necessary.

Anyway, thanks a lot to Dr_Dissonance and PinkieGuy!

Also, i'm planning to go experimental with electronic but i'm pretty busy at the moment, so don't expect it to be here soon.

Hope to hear more!

If you haven't got a pitch wheel in your midi controller... Yeah. But you can always try to change midi to audio and use pitch shift +-50 ct. Most DAWs should have that. And pitch shifting in that small intervals shouldn't alter timbre at all.

Yes, I noticed, I don't have a Pitch Bend, but I might go building an Instrument rack,
Or else, There's still a lot to change, apart quarter, or even micro-tones. (polyrhytmics, 9/4, and stuff)

I guess most of my music is like this *nervous-look*
Please let me be in the OP and pick one? In increasing order of bad craziness-
http://soundcloud.com/applejinx/you-are-cleared-for-takeoff
http://soundcloud.com/applejinx/a-plague-on-both-your-houses
http://soundcloud.com/applejinx/sauce-of-curdle

The first one sounds normalest but has a lot of funny hidden time signature stuff and sour intervals... the other ones are kinda pinkamena in the head... and you can TOO do quarter-tone midi, just program fixed pitch bends for it... (if you are in a DAW that lets you edit automation data on midi tracks or get to the pitchbend data somehow)

Oh thanks! I worked hard on that! :P

I quite liked your Sauce of Curdle, that was pretty cool!

Also, I'll update this soon, got a cello solo coming in the next few days that and I quote from someone who's heard it: "Cellos aren't meant to sound like that!"
