OKAY NO MORE OF THIS THE LACK OF CAPS LOCK IS HURTING ME

ALSO, AS PER GREAT SUGGESTION OF I THINK MALLARD, EVERY TRACK'S TITLE MUST BE IN CAPS LOCK FOR THIS ALBUM

also there will be some sort of tumblr or other organizational thing besides this thread soon so keep a lookout for that~

Eeenope. Captital effort, but no cigar. The amen slices are good, but that kick is simply ghastly, to put it in rarity's terms! All midrange and no low end thud, it just sounds irritating and doesn't have enough sustain. I gotta admit, I'm nowhere near as expert in high speed kick design as Supersaw is, but I can tell ya, this one's a nope needs to be an octave lower at least! The other kick you use is pretty neat tho, I think there's a name for that kind of kick? Zovi probably knows it.

I'd also just rather this tune wasn't remixed again but oh well. At least make the lead synth hoovers or something!

WORK IN PROGRESS INDEED.

Hm, strange midrange rattle here that really puts things off... maybe underneath a full tune it'd be alright, but yeah...not even sure what that is, it's like resonance or something. Anyway ON GOOD HEADPHONES ITS OFFPUTTING

I KINDA FIGURED THAT, YEAH. :P

I meant for a little rattle to be in there, but when I exported it and played it on a set of speakers it was suddenly MIDRANGE CRACKLES ALL OVER THE PLACE. D:

Damn these headphones.

I really don't know anymore. I might just replace the into kick with the one used in the middle. AND DAT HOOVER MAKES ERRYTHANG SO WEIRD MY VOCALS ARE OUT OF TUNE NOW.

If anyone wants I can give them a pack or two of gabber and speedcore kicks they can use. I use them as a base where I add distortion and EQing and such.

When was this?

I will take any and all feedback you can throw at me. I pitched down the drums, tried EQing them (gonna give that a better go later), and at least ATTEMPTED to make hoovers work (in the end it kinda screwed with the vocals).

Oh sorry, I thought that was the implication! Anyway, the hoover thing was just a suggestion of something that might work, and IMO... it does!

But that kick is now way worse than before, it's just become a total mess that provides more driving rhythm. I'd give more feedback but I'm currently on a coach on the way down to London, not an ideal listening enviornment. I'll leave Zovi to help ya.

You do not understand...

Sampling/stealing/ripping kicks in genres in which kicks are most of the work and the hardest to create is blasphemy and frowned upon. If a pro does that, it can mean the end of his carreer if people find out.

I'm serious, everyone can line up a few kicksamples at 250bpm and call it speedcore. Actually creating the kicks, however, isn't.

I'm serious. It's a no-go.

Okay uh to clear things up, Diss is basically saying that you shouldn't be lazy with kick design with this stuff because the kicks are what hard electronic dance music is all about. Kick design is kind of a pride thing and it is indeed someone insulting to throw simple distortion over a stock kick and call it a proper hardcore kick.

Now, that said, some genres call for just throwing simple distortion over a sample. We need to balance pretentiousness levels here between the more "serious" tracks (i.e. the ones that will be technically advanced, which I expect more from the seasoned resident hard-genre musicians here) but if you're making a silly as shit track or some kind of super-heavy-sampling joke track I could not care less how you made your kick because that is not the point of the song.

Now, if you're going to make a hard kick from a sample, I would highly suggest using a simpler sample like a simple 909 kick so that you have more control over how it sounds--and trust me, it will sound better than drowning a more complex kick in distortion haphazardly. Regardless, I encourage everybody to just keep working the way they're comfortable and we'll see what it comes down to when WIPs are posted.

tl;dr Diss is technically correct but we're not going to be anal about it because let's face it this is not exactly a serious album, despite having something of a quality bar.

Also, for clarification from the previous post (see bottom of last page of replies)...

Tremil wrote:soo....we can't use a premade kick that came in a pack or anything? Guess i'm out.

The concept here is that you SHOULD be altering the kick in some way. Using premade kicks without editing them at all is generally frowned upon in this type of music, yes. It's easier than you think, though, to make a kick entirely unrecognizable, and thus, your own.

"I would highly suggest using a simpler sample like a simple 909 kick"

Or get a 909 generator like Drumazon, if control is what you want. You can tweak the dry 909 in any imaginable way, from pitch to attack to tail length/decay to tune. I suggest imagining what kind of kick you want to create before playing around with it and let the dry 909 sound as close to that as possible before overdriving/distorting it.

And even after you've dumped dozens of effects on top of the Drumazon output, you can still tweak the decay etc. in the VST without damaging the character of the kick. :) (If you're doing it right, that is).

Practice makes perfect. :3

EDIT: Bonus points for people that manage to make proper pitch kicks and use them appropriately. :3
