Rainbow & Rooted: One Last Shot

Current events we're participating in.

Alright.

So we can't submit our rejected R&R songs.

In that case, I think I'm out.

No way in hell that 12 days will be enough for me to write an entirely new song.

MAYBE if I'm allowed to spend these next two weeks mixing and mastering my original song then I'll submit it.

Sounds like there's some tension between Circuit and Aviators/Omni...

Well, from what i'm getting, a VIP of your submitted song would be alright, then I guess I can give it another go. Funny thing is, this album made me realize how much I suck at mixing and mastering...I've never had a good EQing ear

Okay; this is going to be more or less my track. I'm going to be adding a few vocals later (a short thing at the beginning and end; and during the sections before each drop (the octave jumps) on the higher note there is going to be just a short "BANG"). I know there is something weird going on in the bridge section with the resonance of the main synth sounding really wet, and I'm trying to fix that up. As a base, though, how does this sound? I'm trying to go for a kinda chaotic/ fast feel

This is all just my opinion, and considering the aim of the album I'm not gonna even touch how good the mixing and whatnot is. (considering I'm not very good at that myself)
Also, I'm not trying to say the song is bad, it definitely has potential but there are a few things about it that could be better.

Important things:
- The kick drum is panned to the right; it's very distracting and awkward.
- The lead synth doesn't seem full enough, like it doesn't have enough stereo spread or reverb or something. Try boosting the highs (maybe around 5 KHz?) or cutting out the lows (500 Hz and down) a little bit to help it have more presence.
- The transitions between the climax and the bridge and whatnot sound forced and a little out of place, a short drum roll right before the switch might help a bit.
- The noise sweep at the beginning shouldn't go down and then back up, it should start with the filter completely closed and then sweep up, in my opinion. Also, the resonance on the filter for the noise sweep is too high, when it reaches the completely open state the noise is very piercing and uncomfortable to listen to. Or at the very least, have the resonance decrease as the filter opens.
- I don't like the tempo change at the end, it's too abrupt and only really works if you're changing genres in my opinion. It's also beyond evil to DJs.
- I didn't notice hardly any bass. The majority of the sub was taken up by the kick drum and it really overpowered the rest of the song, so if there was an actual bass, I didn't hear it.

Nitpicky things:
- At the end, I feel the lead should have some sort of delay or long reverb on that last note, so it transitions out of the song a little better, or perhaps a subtle noise sweep in the background.
- The song is really short. This is fine most of the time, but it makes the song feel rushed, not to mention the fact that the verses and bridge are very short and don't give a sense of suspense before the next drop hardly at all. Sometimes making a song at a very fast tempo makes it difficult to make it a decent length, but I generally have no trouble making dnb or hardcore songs 3 - 5 minutes long. I think it's really a matter of preference and also the style of producing, though.
- The drum pattern seems a little awkward. Hardcore music usually is kick snare kick snare kick snare kick snare (with kicks playing with the snares as well), but your pattern seems to be kick kick snare kick kick kick snare which takes away a bit of the rushing feeling.
- The filter for the lead at the beginning goes up and down and up and down; this might be by design but it doesn't really help bring in the intro to the song very well and it's a little distracting.
- This is more of a personal preference, but I don't think the kick was sidechained to anything. It's very important in EDM to sidechain your kick with everything (especially bass) so its sub doesn't mess with the sub of other instruments. In house music, it provides the characteristic pumping sound like what you hear in deadmau5's music. In hardcore, it helps give more of that bouncy, fun sound because of how fast it is.

Not terrible, but not great either. The melody is cool though. Also, I'm not much of a hardcore person anyways, (I mostly listen to and produce dnb) so the things I pointed out might just be characteristic to the genre. Again, this is all just my opinion and I'm not trying to be blunt or harsh, just stating the things I think could be improved. :3

I talked to Cfry on skype last night and while Rainbow & Rooted : One Last Shot is very much mixing and mastering IS less important, the next comp will be very much FOR the argument that mixing and mastering is ESSENTIAL, as well as an entirely different tone (IDM)).

Twilight is by the book and about perfection so study up in the next year or don't enter..... :|

Wow, man! Thanks a ton for taking time to write this out! I'll definitely work on these things. (I've been having problems getting the resonance to sound right; this is actually really really low resonance right now, but it still sounds high :\ )

Well, luckily I heard of it before it is too late ^.^

I'm already in the process of making something new and it has some feels. Maybe even a bit more than some, we'll see.

I have two WIP's at the moment:
http://soundcloud.com/r-y-s-e/momentum-update-wip
http://soundcloud.com/r-y-s-e/thin-air-early-wip
I only wanna work on one for this but I'm not sure which is more suitable/better.

If some of you are already posting WIP's so will I, then.

I have no title yet, but that'll come soon.

Haha I'm now already getting ready for next year.
Practicing my beats, gonna make it all messed up. IDM AWAY! (I'm dead)

100% change that the team of violence (Dave! and Supersaw) want Breakcore. Or perhaps Hardcore Breaks.
Well that'll be easy enough xD but that's not now yet.

You know guys can you please not post WIPs when you see someone else posting a WIP, can you rather COMMENT on his WIP? How the hell can you expect to get feedback on your WIP when you just ignore someone posting before you?

Ocular's wip is pretty uneventful and it sounds like really stock drag n drop kicks, it's very nice once it gets going, the transition is a bit sudden when the piano comes in, need a longer noise sweep, it's not too bad but I'm not all for moombah in the first place mate

The other WIP sounds nice but it all sounds like one big intro, it doesn't seem like anything went down in that mix yet

I would really recommend using skype chats as the way to get feedback on tracks if thats what you're after. MLR has a plague of people dropping their own tracks to get seen but w/o people planning on giving feedback or ever doing so. Until that changes just stop embbedding every thread with your tracks OR make a concentrated effort to listen to others and give that feedback (not just one track but several) throughout. This place can't work if people don't GIVE and take.
