What are some of your favorite lyrics and why?

Postby Callenby » 30 Sep 2013 22:53

(I haven't seen anything like this but if there has been then I apologize.)

I don't think I've ever started a thread here before, so why not now?

Post lyrics from absolutely ANY song you want. Doesn't matter if it's fanmade or not. It can be anything from a single line to the whole song (unless it takes up a ridiculous amount of space).

For example, here's some of my favorite lyrics, from Simon and Garfunkel's "The Boxer".
In the clearing stands a boxer
And a fighter by his trade
And he carries the reminders
Of ev'ry glove that layed him down
Or cut him till he cried out
In his anger and his shame
"I am leaving, I am leaving"
But the fighter still remains

This is the final verse of the song, and the entire time beforehand it was told in first person. Why the sudden and unexplained change? It's as though Simon no longer wants us to be able to relate to the boxer (or at least not as intimately as we did before). Are we to assume New York City has caused him to become so alienated that we have to now follow along with it as though it were a biography?

Also, the "I am leaving, I am leaving" line offers the last semblance of first person narration and it doesn't seem coincidental that it also indicates the boxer's desire to flee (though he clearly does not act on this impulse). I know that that has been interpreted as representing perseverance but to me it sounds more like stubbornness or even denial. He's filled with anger and shame and he the way he deals with it is by proclaiming that he will run away. I think he's unable to leave because he fears if he returned home they wouldn't recognize him at all.

I could write some more but I don't want to bore anyone any more so I'll leave it at that.

How about you?

My hope is that people will share lyrics that have been profound and meaningful to them but if everyone just wants to post some they think are funny too then that would be fine I suppose.

Panic! at the Disco - Turn off the lights wrote:I've got my heavy heart to hold me down
Once it falls apart my head's in the clouds
So I'm taking every chance I got

Fall Out Boy - Just One Yesterday wrote:Anything you say can and will be held against you
So only say my name
It will be held against you

Panic! at the Disco - Oh Glory wrote:I can only hope it's true enough
That every little thing I do for love
Redeems me from the moments I deem worthy
Of the worst things that I've done
And saves me from myself at times of envy
When I'm missing every one

If I wake in the morning
I only need two more miracles to be a saint
Everything I promised everyone I'd be
Well I just ain't

Lately it seems like everybody's sick everybody's dying
Build myself a wall of unhappy hearts
And only my heart knows my head is lying, lying

Yeah...you can't tell what my favorite bands are at all.....Seriously though, I'd post the whole Vices & Virtues album by Panic! at the Disco.

Tell me 'bout the color of your soul
If part of your solution isn't ending the pollution
Then I don't want to hear your stories told
I want to welcome you to Scatman's world

...Everyone's born to compete as he chooses
But how can someone win if winning means that someone loses
I sit and see and wonder what it's like to be in touch
No wonder all my brothers and my sisters need a crutch

I want to be a human being not a human doing
I couldn't keep that pace up if I tried
The source of my intention really isn't crime prevention
My intention is prevention of the lie, yeah
Welcome to the Scatman's world

Scatman John has always had some beautifully raw language in his songs. And I don't mean that in the sense of slang, but in the sense that he contrasts scatting, which is literally nonsense syllables, with straightforward, simple, punch-to-your-gut verses. It's what makes his songs truly beautiful.

"You've got one more chance to do right" - and it's tonight
Now go out there and show that you love 'em before it's too late- Eminem

Too many sins
I'm running out
Somebody send
Me a well for the drought
See, all I know, is taking notes
On taking this life for granted
Granted, if he provoke
My best days, I stress days (Lord forgive me for all my sins for I not know...)
My best days, I stress days
Say "Fuck the world, " my sex slave
Money, pussy and greed what's my next crave
Whatever it is, know it's my next grave- Kendrick Lamar

She says It's only in my head
She says Shhh I know it's only in my head
But the girl in car in the parking lot
says "Man you should try to take a shot
can't you see my walls are crumbling?"
Then she looks up at the building
and says she's thinking of jumping
She says she's tired of life
she must be tired of something- Counting Crows

Oh, mirror in the sky
What is love?
Can the child within my heart rise above?
Can I sail thru the changing ocean tides?
Can I handle the seasons of my life?

Mmm Mmm...

Well, I've been afraid of changing
'Cause I've built my life around you
But time makes you bolder
Children get older
I'm getting older too- Stevie Nicks

Love
So many things I've got to tell you
But I'm afraid I don't know how
Cause there's a possibility
You'll look at me differently
Love
Ever since the first moment I spoke your name
From then on I knew that by you being in my life
Things were destined to change cause......
Love
So many people use your name in vain
Love
Those who faith in you sometimes go astray
Love
Through all the ups and downs the joy and hurt
Love
For better or worse I still will choose you first - MusiqSoulchild

I've been there, done it, fucked around
After all that - this is what I found
Nobody wants to be alone
If you're touched by the words in this song
Then baby...
U got, u got it bad
When you're on the phone
Hang up and you call right back
U got, u got it bad
If you miss a day without your friend
Your whole life's off track
You know you got it bad when you're stuck in the house
You don't wanna have fun
It's all you think about
U got it bad when you're out with someone
But you keep on thinkin' bout somebody else
U got it bad - USHER

Together we can overcome all the odds
It's never as hard as it seems
Everyone can do something special
The secret is sharing your dreams

We can make it if we all stick together
We won't give up, not ever
And every thing's going to be alright
We all bring out the best things in each other
Together we are stronger than anyone else could be on their own
So much better than alone -Ted Poley

When you walk away
You don't hear me say,
"Please, oh baby, don't go."
Simple and clean is the way that you're making me feel tonight
It's hard to let it go

Hold me
Whatever lies beyond this morning
Is a little later on
Regardless of warnings the future doesn't scare me at all
Nothing's like before - Hikaru Utada

These next two are dumb

I may seem crazy
Or painfully shy
And these scars wouldn't be so hidden
If you would just look me in the eye
I feel alone here and cold here
Though I don't want to die
But the only anesthetic that makes me feel anything kills inside

Plumb - Cut
Mainly the last 3 lines. Kind of a obvious drug/alcohol reference but I like the concept of a reverse anesthetic. Depression numbs you to feeling so you take drugs/alcohol to feel anything, even knowing the consequences.

It started out with a kiss
How did it end up like this?
It was only a kiss
It was only a kiss

Now I'm falling asleep
And she's calling a cab
While he's having a smoke
And she's taking a drag

Now they're going to bed
And my stomach is sick
And it's all in my head

But she's touching his chest now
He takes off her dress now
Let me go

And I just can't look it's killing me
And taking control

Jealousy, turning saints into the sea
Swimming through sick lullabies
Choking on your alibis

But it's just the price I pay
Destiny is calling me
Open up my eager eyes
Cause I'm Mr. Brightside

I never thought about these lyrics really until I heard that the song writer wrote these lyrics after listening to another band and throwing out all his old lyrics. Basically replace "she" with success and "he" with another band.

Enter Shikari - System... wrote:There was a house in a field on the side of a cliff
And the waves crashing below were just said to be a myth
So they ignored the warnings from the ships in the docks
Now the house on the cliff is the wreckage on the rocks

Nothing could fix the buildings flawed foundations
The scaffolding and stilts were the laws of legislation
This house was doomed, but they didn't care
They'd invested in the system that was beyond repair

When I was little:
I dressed up as an astronaut, and explored outer space
I dressed up as a superhero, and ran about the place
I dressed up as a fireman, and rescued those in need
I dressed up as a doctor, and cured every disease

It was crystal clear to me back then, that the only problems that I could face
Would be the same problems that affect us all
But of course this sense of common existence was sucked out of me in an instance
As though from birth I could walk but I was forced to crawl

So this is such an exciting time to be alive!
Our generation's got to fight to survive!
It's in your hands now; who's future?
Our future! Our future!

30 Seconds to Mars - Hurricane wrote:The promises we made were not enough
The prayers that we had prayed were like a drone
The secrets that we sold were never known
The love we had the love we had
We had to let it go

Tell me would you kill to save a life
Tell me would you kill to prove you're right
Crash crash
Burn let it all burn
This hurricane's chasing us all underground

TSTM - Kings and Queens wrote:Into the night
Desperate and broken
The sound of a fight
Father has spoken.

We were the kings and queens of promise
We were the victims of ourselves
Maybe the children of a lesser God
Between Heaven and Hell,

I absolutely love 30 seconds to mar's lyrics. All their songs can either punch you in the gut or lift you up, and sometimes both.

I'll post again later, but Coheed and Cambrias entire discography tells one massive story, every album is part of this massive scifi story called 'The Amory Wars' which is actually really, really good. Along with each concept album, there have been comics, Novels, etc. There's even a movie potentialy in the making.

The first album is a little heavy. Not musically heavy, like, emotionally heavy. Terrible things happen and there is no way I could have made the decisions the parents did.

...
That's all I can think of right now, but I love when songs tell stories :3

Alex Kidd - Love Of Loops wrote:I remember back in the 80s when I first heard electronic music
I knew back then this illegal computersound was gonna be my call
My heart got hooked on four-by-four beats when House took it's journey with Jack, Chicago and Acid House

Now my heart is hooked forever.
It's in my soul, in my veins, on my mind 24/7
Don't care if it's Jazz, Soul, Tech, Minimal, Funky, Vocal, or Hip-House
You name it. I love it.

I don't understand people who're satisfied by ordinary pop-music
They just listen to whatever radio-stations decide they should like
And my god. They like it.

Some people even think that House clubs are for weirdos only
Maybe they're right. Maybe we are weird. Maybe this music is weird, and maybe the clubs are overrated
But we're in this together
We're in this for the love of beats
For the love of loops

Maybe they're right
Maybe we are weird
Maybe this music is weird
And maybe the clubs are overrated
But we're in this together
We're in this for the love of beats
For the love of loops
It's in my soul

It's all about the House music, and it always has been
If you're in the House music, DJ seems like a natural path to follow
And back in the days, DJs were weird people who like music in a weird way
Back then you would have to be a nerd to become a DJ
Nowadays, everyone wants to be that DJ
It sickens me
If you're not in it for the love of music, would you please fuck off
Hate those smart asses who think DJ'ing is an easy way to get laid
Well, get a life

I wonder what House will be like in the future
I wonder what the clubs will be like
Now that technology has taken over the DJ world, what will a DJ be like in the future
Lets just hope that House music will keep its soul
Lets just hope that DJs will keep their skills
But actually... I don't give a shit
We don't give a shit
Cause it's not about how you do it
But why you do it
It's all about the House music, and it always will be

These lyrics mean a lot to me. They remind me of who I am and how I'm gonna make it big one day.

Will post other set of lyrics later, just happened to have these on a mobile note.

Sparrow - Simon and Garfunkel wrote:Who will love a little Sparrow?
Who's traveled far and cries for rest?
"Not I," said the Oak Tree,
"I won't share my branches with
no sparrow's nest,
And my blanket of leaves won't warm
her cold breast."

Who will love a little Sparrow
And who will speak a kindly word?
"Not I," said the Swan,
"The entire idea is utterly absurd,
I'd be laughed at and scorned if the
other Swans heard."

Who will take pity in his heart,
And who will feed a starving sparrow?
"Not I," said the Golden Wheat,
"I would if I could but I cannot I know,
I need all my grain to prosper and grow."

Who will love a little Sparrow?
Will no one write her eulogy?
"I will," said the Earth,
"For all I've created returns unto me,
From dust were ye made and dust ye shall be."

Showtek - Memories wrote:The power of the moment brings memories back to life
As this night ends you're like a summer bird taking flight
The power of the moment brings that sparkle in your eyes
Like cloudy climes and starry skies
The power of the moment gives you that feeling to move to the track
Yeah, and tonight we're gonna bring all those memories back

This track has a very, very special meaning to me. Always, I am reminded of the destructive power of human feelings and emotions. Reminds me of of the flaw, or better said, lack of flaw in the way we, as humans, work.

Everyone has a special song. A song that bonded with one's heart through exploiting our body and state of mind with unheard chemical changes that hold the raw potential of the emotions moved at that very moment.
This is mine. It holds my destiny, my history, my endless sins and victories in life, but also the power to adapt, shaping my weaknesses into strengths, and the power to unfreeze time when the timeless journey ends.

Wait-waiting for the bus in the rain.

Flipper- Life wrote:It's life, life, life is the only thing worth living for
Yes life, life, life is the only thing worth living for
Yes life, life, life is the only thing worth living for
Life, life, life is the only thing worth

Flipper is so inspirational. This song reaches almost as high of lyrical heights as the seminal "Sex Bomb!" Seriously though, the message of this song is good, if a little tautological.

I love that song and Satellite High. I got "Made us Grits" and "Beebee on the Bus" after first hearing it.

They Might Be Giants- Don't Let's Start wrote:No one in the world
Ever gets what they want
And that is beautiful
Everybody dies
Frustrated and sad
And that is beautiful

The way this sung definitely makes it even better. (Yes, I know these lyrics were tongue-in-cheek/for rhythmic purposes. Still like them) In general, TMBG has very good, if strange lyrics.

Slint- Washer wrote: Goodnight my love
Remember me as you fall to sleep
Fill your pockets with the dust and the memories
That rises from the shoes on my feet

I won't be back here
Though we may meet again

I know it's dark outside
Don't be afraid
Every time I ever cried from fear
Was just a mistake that I made
Wash yourself in your tears
And build your church
On the strength of your faith

Please
Listen to me
Don't let go
Don't let this desperate moonlight leave me
With your empty pillow
Promise me the sun will rise again

I too am tired now
Embracing thoughts of tonight's dreamless sleep
My head is empty
My toes are warm
I am safe from harm

I actually prefer "Good Morning, Captain" more, but my favorite lyrics from it are from the end and are best in the context of music (AKA, you have to hear them). That being said, "Washer" has nice depressing lyrics.

Two Inch Astronaut- Zones wrote: its not what you think, only what it looks like
too terse when i drink, you like those longwinded types
puffing out their chests, talking circles round our eyes
mapping out their bodies in erogenous zones
bloody hands in pockets c'mon everyone knows
don't be too hard on your parents they really tried
don't curse while you eat, it is unbecoming
i said trick or treat and you left me with something else

I really like the lyrics of this song, though I'm not sure what the meaning is.

Dead Milkmen- Stuart wrote:You know what, Stuart, I LIKE YOU. You're not like the other
People, here, in the trailer park.

Oh, don't go get me wrong. They're fine people, they're
Good Americans. But they're content to sit back, maybe
Watch a little Mork and Mindy on channel 57, maybe kick
Back a cool, Coors 16-ouncer. They're good, fine people,
Stuart. But they don't know ... what the queers are doing
To the soil!

You know that Jonny Wurster kid, the kid that delivers papers
In the neighborhood. He's a foreign kid. Some of the neighbors
Say he smokes crack, but I don't believe it.

Anyway, for his tenth birthday, all he wanted was a Burrow Owl.
Kept bugging his old man. "Dad, get me a burrow owl. I'll never
Ask for anything else as long as I live." So the guy
Breaks down and buys him a burrow owl.

Anyway, 10:30, the other night, I go out in my yard, and there's
The Wurster kid, looking up in the tree. I say, "What are
You looking for?" He says "I'm looking for my burrow owl."
I say, "Jumping Jesus on a Pogo Stick. Everybody knows
The burrow owl lives. In a hole. In the ground. Why the hell do you
Think they call it a burrow owl, anyway?" Now Stuart, do you
Think a kid like that is going to know what the queers are
Doing to the soil?

I first became aware of this about ten years ago, the summer
My oldest boy, Bill Jr. died. You know that carnival comes into
Town every year? Well this year they came through with a ride
Called The Mixer. The man said, "Keep your head, and arms, inside
The Mixer at all times." But Bill Jr, he was a DAAAREDEVIL, just
Like his old man. He was leaning out saying "Hey everybody,
Look at me! Look at me!" Pow! He was decapitated! They found
His head over by the snow cone concession.

A few days after that, I open up the mail. And there's a pamphlet
In there. From Pueblo, Colorado, and it's addressed to Bill, Jr.
And it's entitled, "Do you know what the queers are doing to our
Soil?"

Now, Stuart, if you look at the soil around any large US city,
There's a big undeground homosexual population. Des Moines, Iowa,
For an example. Look at the soil around Des Moines, Stuart.
You can't build on it; you can't grow anything in it. The government
Says it's due to poor farming. But I know what's really going on,
Stuart. I know it's the queers. They're in it with the aliens.
They're building landing strips for gay Martians, I swear to
God.

You know what, Stuart, I like you. You're not like the other
People, here in this trailer park.

No song attempting to tell a story will ever reach the greatness of this song.suck it concept albums and stuff like that

My lyrical choice make me look more emo than I am. Oh well. I listen to a lot of stuff where the lyrics aren't as important, or I can't understand them. Also, I'll probably end up posting more as I think of them

Scatman John has always had some beautifully raw language in his songs. And I don't mean that in the sense of slang, but in the sense that he contrasts scatting, which is literally nonsense syllables, with straightforward, simple, punch-to-your-gut verses. It's what makes his songs truly beautiful.

My favorite Scatman lyrics are to his self-titled song

Everybody stutters one way or the other
So check out my message to you
As a matter of fact
Don't let nothing hold you back
If the scatman can do it
So can you
Everybody says that the scatman stutters
But doesn't ever stutters when he sings
But what you don't know
I'm gonna tell you right now
That the stutter and the scat is the same thing
Yo, I'm the scat man
Where's the scat man? I'm the scat man.

It's meaningful when you know Scatman's story, with his stuttering. He turned his greatest problem into his greatest assist, and the"If the scatman can do it So can you " becomes so motivational.

In Flames - Take This Life

It's not so much the pain
It's more the actual knife
Pretending the picture is perfect,
I cut myself to sleep
I close my eyes for a second
And meet a fragile soul
I scream to hide that I'm lonely,
The echo calls my name

If I ever... if I never...
Make me understand the thought whatever
Make me see... make me be...
Make me understand you're there for me

Take this life
I'm right here
Stay a while and breathe me in

Take this life
I'm right here
Stay a while and breathe me in

The water drops
Just beg to hit me
Why now? Haven't rained for days
No time to play hide and seek
I call upon you to take me on
Break me down to pieces
Put me back,
Do it right this time
Struggling to fill this empty stream
Burn my efforts in the end it means NOTHING

If I ever... if I never...
Make me understand the thought whatever
Make me see... make me be...
Make me understand you're there for me

Take this life

Neaera - Liberation

The house, the storm
Feather and tar

Art, existence
The flower in the sewer

The day of mourn are pass
All sorrow aside
I finally arrived
In a realm I thought not be true
Here I dwell forever
Eternal ease
Found a lotus in the sewer
A lake for the sword
No longer sick of running
- no longer scared of burning

The world has silenced
The voices are gone
I made oil my water
And dust my air
Found relief, salvation
Quit the downward spiral
Sad years, bygone
Future - the brightest white

Grand, imperial peace
I left the wretched, the scarred
Despise all grief
Antagonism obsolete

Great In Flames song with great lyrics. While I don't think the song is In Flames's best, I think The Quite Place has some of their best lyrics:
Spinning further, deeper
I know you're out to try me
I'm not in this to be a slave
Push the dirt, make me feel
Locate what swallows life
Night bird you build my world

..and then I close my eyes
..and then I close my eyes

Judge me now
Used to be afraid to let it show, bow down
A king in my own mind
Everything's in place so much brighter from today

Drown the monster
Make all bad dreams go away
Whatever it takes to keep your hands free
Open scars, the quiet place
All the bridges fall to the ground and you say you sacrificed

..and then I close my eyes
..and then I close my eyes

Judge me now
Used to be afraid to let it show, bow down, bow down!
A king in my own mind
Everything's in place so much brighter from today
A king in my own mind

Judge me now
A king in my own mind
Judge me now
A king in my own mind

Judge me now
Used to be afraid to let it show, Bow down, bow down!
A king in my own mind
Everything's in place so much brighter from today
A king in my own mind

I just like and need my quiet place. Also it doesn't really make much sense if I think about it, but I feel like a relate to the chorus of Clayman.

How come it's possible?
I wish there was a way
I feel so invincible
I'm the sculpture made of clay

Maybe I'm subconsciously picking up on the rest of the lyrics. I also like the lyrics to "Pinball Map", "Come Clarity", and "Crawl through Knives". Sometimes I just feel like I'm crawling through knives. :P

Anyway, Tool and System of a Down also have lots of great lyrics. I'll start with Tool. Some of their lyrics are just pretentious drug addled mystic nonsense, but other ones are actually really clever. Stinkfist is one of the songs. I really like the one line "Relax, turn around, and take my hand". When I learned the alternative interpretation of that line, it just really struck me, and ultimately it means there is two ways to take the ending of the song, a cynical and an ideal one. Another great one is vicarious:

Eye on the TV
Cause tragedy thrills me
Whatever flavor it happens to be
Like
Killed by the husband"
"Drowned by the ocean"
Shot by his own son
She used a poison
In his tea
And kissed him goodbye
That's my kind of story
It's no fun until someone dies

Don't look at me like
I am a monster
Frown out your one face
But with the other
Stare like a junkie
Into the TV
Stare like a zombie

While the mother holds her child
Watches him die
Hands to the sky crying,
"Why, oh why?"

Cause I need to watch things die, from a distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all need it too, don't lie

Why can't we just admit it?
Why can't we just admit it?
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing
Neither the brave nor bold
Were writers of the stories told
We won't give pause until the blood is flowing

I need to watch things die... from a good safe distance
Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
You all feel the same, so

Why can't we just admit it?

Blood like rain come down
Drum on grave and ground

Part vampire
Part warrior
Carnivore and voyeur
Still have the transmitter
Synched to the death rattle

La, la, la, la, la, la-la-lie (x4)

Credulous at best
Your desire to believe in
Angels in the hearts of men
Pull your head of your hippie haze, and give a listen
Shouldn't have to say it all again

The universe is hostile, so impersonal
Devour to survive, so it is, so it's always been

We all feed on tragedy
It's like blood to a vampire

Vicariously I live while the whole world dies
Much better you than I

Besides the way he says "lie lie lie", the thing I love the most is the irony of the name. Vicarious implies an empathetic experience, yet the song is about enjoying hearing about others dying, which is rather sadistic and thus seemly the opposite of empathetic. The song is bold and illuminates a horror in our world, are unhelathy obsession with death in the media. Another good one is "The Pot", but my all time favorite Tool lyrics is "Right in Too"

Angels on the sideline
Puzzled and amused.
Why did Father give these humans free will?
Now they're all confused.

Don't these talking monkeys know that Eden has enough to go around?
Plenty in this holy garden, silly old monkeys,
Where there's one you're bound to divide it
Right in two

Angels on the sideline
Baffled and confused
Father blessed them all with reason.
And this is what they choose.
Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground

Silly monkeys give them thumbs,
They forge a blade, and where there's one they're bound to divide it
Right in two.
Right in two.

Monkey killing monkey killing monkey over pieces of the ground
Silly monkeys give them thumbs, they make a club
And beat their brother down.
How they survive so misguided is a mystery.
Repugnant is a Creature who would squander the ability
To lift an eye to heaven, conscious of his fleeting time here

Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two

Fight over the clouds, over wind, over sky and
Fight over life, over blood, over air and light,
Over love, over sun, over another.
Fight for the time, for the one, for the rise and

Angels on the sideline again
Been so long with patience and reason
Angels on the sideline again
Wondering when this tug of war will end

Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Cut and divide it all right in two
Right in two
Right in two

Despite being very opposed to organized religion and definitely not being Christian, Maynard uses religious imagery beautifully and mostly unironically (it could be interpreted as referring to religious wars) to deliver a great message to believers and non-believers alike. It even appears to be referencing Solomon's Story, showing that even Maynard finds there to be some wisdom in the Bible. Aside from calling people monkeys it still a respectful song when interpreted as being anti-religious. Well, anyway, great song.

With System, I think their lyrical height was around Toxicity, with lyrics the appear nonsensical, but the presence of a deeper meaning is subtle and drives you to want to investigate the song, and then you find out so much. They appear to have an intended meaning, but they can still be interpretted many different ways. "Spiders" had great lyrics with "The piercing radiant moon, The storming of poor june, All the life running through her hair" and " and "Dreams are made winding through my head", but I find the line about v-chips was too blunt, contrasting with the more subtle nature of the rest of the song. The problem with many of the lyrics on Hypontize is likewise they are also too politically blunt. Now, most of the songs on Toxicity have great lyrics, but I think the best is ATWA.

Hey you, see me, pictures crazy
All the world I've seen before me passing by
I've got nothing, to gain, to lose
All the world I've seen before me passing by
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore

Anymore... nananananananananana

Hey you, are me, not so pretty
All the world I've seen before me passing by
Silent my voice, I've got no choice
All the world I've seen before me passing by
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
I don't see, anymore
I don't hear, anymore
I don't speak, anymore
I don't feel

Nananananananananananana... (x2)

Hey you, see me, pictures crazy
All the world I've seen before me passing by
I've got nothing, to gain, to lose
All the world I've seen before me passing by
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
You don't care about how I feel
I don't feel there anymore
I don't sleep, anymore
I don't eat, anymore
I don't live, anymore
I don't feel

What makes it the best is that on it's own the lyrics are really general, just raw and emotional, but not in any way generic. However, when combined with the title a specific meaning starts to become clear. ATWA is an abbreviation for "Air, Trees, Water, Animals", which was the mantra of Charles Manson. This makes me wonder whether the narrator of the song is supposed to be Charles Manson or Mother Earth. Either way, I think it's pretty deep, and a rather stark message.

Oh, and Bounce
Jump, Bounce, Down, Up

I went out on a date,
With a girl, a bit late,
She had so many friends,
Gliding through many hands.
I brought my pogo stick,
Just to show her a trick,
She had so many friends,
Gliding through many hands.

Jump Pogo?..
Bounce Pogo,
Down Pogo, Up Pogo

Unannounced twister games,
All players with no names,
They lined up double quick,
But just one pogo stick,
Everyone gets to play,
Runaway, expose',
It was so exotic,
But just one pogo stick.

Jump Pogo?..
Bounce Pogo,
Down Pogo, Up Pogo

Oh, I like to spread you out,
Touching whoever's behind

Jump Pogo?..
Bounce Pogo,
Down Pogo, Up Pogo

If you trying really hard that song is completely innocent. XD

Now, this isn't quite System, it's from for Serj's solo career, but I think the single best line in a song is "i loved you yesterday before you killed my family" from "Empty Walls". I don't think the lyrics to the whole song are the greatest, but the way he sings that one line....damn. With each word the meaning becomes clearified and it's so haunting, especially after it's all put together.

My absolute favorite lyrics as a whole are actually from someone from the fandom, though not a song from the fandom. The song is "Burnout" by Tarby.

I know it’s hard when the world is changing
I know you cry yourself to sleep
I know that times are tough, you’re another diamond in the rough
With promises you always fail to keep
You’re losing touch with all around you
You’re giving up on all your friends
I’ve seen you waste away; there’s little I could do or say
To ever bring your problems to an end

Flying away, leaving your home, your dreams, and all that you desire
Throwing away everything you loved, you're burning in your fire
Burnout, Burnout. You're burning in your fire!
Burnout, Burnout. You're giving up again.

I know you’re feeling rather desperate
For answers you know you won’t get
You’re at the perfect age, with strength and spirit none could gauge
And still, you try your hardest to forget
Every secret, every answer
Every lie you’ve ever told
Every guilty sigh, and every time you fell to cry
Your strength became a weakness, in the end you became cold.

Flying away, leaving your home, your dreams, and all that you desire
Throwing away everything you loved, you're burning in your fire
Burnout, Burnout. You're burning in your fire!
Burnout, Burnout. You're giving up again.

You won, but at what cost?
The spirit of everything you’ve lost
Is haunting all your memories
You’re doing your best but they won’t leave you be!
But now’s the time to set things right
You gotta set straight what you call a life
And put it behind you, Now is the time to go!

Flying away, leaving your home, your dreams, and all that you desire
Throwing away everything you loved, you're burning in your fire
Burnout, Burnout. You're burning in your fire!
Burnout, Burnout. You're giving up again.

It's a subject which rarely comes up, but it's an important one. I feel like a relate with those lyrics far more than I should, and I just listened to it over and over to try to keep my sane in a crazy period of my life were I just wanted to Burnout. The other song lyrics I really like from Tarby is the chorus to "Sentimental".

I miss the days when all was fine
We'd walk the streets to our own time
But now reality has shown
That in the end, we haven't grown
And now those times are said and done
It seems the worst has just begun
Those days, they used to be so fun
Now we're left running from the sun

The chorus sounds pretty awesome too with that crunching riff and wall of guitars. Anyway, I relate to those lyrics, though ironically enough I find myself relating to the instrumental on the album more than anything. How do you even relate to an instrumental? The song is called "Furthest You've Ever Been From Home".

Also from the fandom, I really like the lyrics to "Someone Like Me" by Aviators.
I'm feeling like a photograph
Life never changes but it goes by fast
Far too fast for me to catch
They tell me I'm too insecure, that
I should believe in myself more
If only it was as easy as that

Sometimes I just feel like
A stranger in my life
Sometimes I don't feel right at all
I may be lonely
But maybe I'm supposed to be 'cuz
No one's there to hear me when I call

Things get complicated
So I've watched and waited
For the moment I'll find
Someone like me
I feel so underrated
Some just leave me frustrated
Feels like I'll never find
Someone like me

My wings feel broken but they work fine
I guess confidence never was mine
A harsh word can leave me stunned
Some say I'm unique and others strange
Some say I'm just living up to my name
But I can't be the only one

Sometimes I just feel like
A stranger in my life
Sometimes I don't feel right at all
I may be lonely
But maybe I'm supposed to be cuz'
No one's there to hear me when I call

Just when I thought I was all alone
You came and showed me I'm not on my own
I'm not that different, you've made me see
I've finally found someone like me

Things get complicated
So I've watched and waited
For the moment I'll find
Someone like me
I feel so underrated
Some just leave me frustrated
Maybe I've finally found
Someone like me

I wouldn't exactly describe myself as shy, more so in the past (though I think I've actually gotten more stage freight over time :P), but I still really relate to this song. Fluttershy is my favorite characters for reasons.

What else, I like the lyrics to "Supersonic" by Bad Religion.
Well am I making haste or could it be haste is making me
What's time but a thing to kill or keep or buy or lose or live in
I gotta go faster
Keep up the pace
Just to stay in the human race

I could go supersonic
the problem's chronic
Tell me does life exist beyond it
When I need to sate
I just accelerate
Into oblivion
Into oblivi yah yah yah yah yah yah yan

Now here I go again
everything is alien
How does it feel to be outstripped by the pace of cultural change
My deeds are senseless
and rendered meaningless
When measured in that vein

I could go supersonic
the problem's chronic
Tell me does life exist beyond it
When I need to sate
I just accelerate into oblivion
Into oblivion

I won't lie
it's exciting
When I try
to decide things
I just want to live
decently
meaningfully
I'm in misery

I could I go supersonic
the problem's chronic
Tell me does life exist beyond it
When I need to sate
I just accelerate into oblivion
Into oblivi yah yah yah yah yah yah yan

Find them somewhat relatable. Anyway, Bad Religion is great in that their lyrics are catchy without being stupid, like in songs like "American Jesus" and "21st Century Digital Boy".

Finally I'll finish with Boulevard of Broken Dreams, that should be enough for now.
I walk a lonely road
The only one that I have ever known
Don't know where it goes
But it's only me to me and I walk alone

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of broken dreams
When the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a-

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I walk alone

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ahhh-Ah
Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah

I'm walking down the line
That divides me somewhere in my mind
On the border line of the edge
And where I walk alone
Read between the lines of what's
Fucked up and everything's all right
Check my vital signs to know I'm still alive
And I walk alone

I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk alone
I walk a-

My shadow's the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I'll walk alone...

Ah-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah
Ahhh-Ah Ah-Ah Ah-Ah
I walk alone
I walk a-

I walk this empty street
On the Boulevard of broken dreams
When the city sleeps
And I'm the only one and I walk a-

My shadows the only one that walks beside me
My shallow hearts the only thing that's beating
Sometimes I wish someone out there will find me
'Til then I'll walk alone

Re: What are some of your favorite lyrics and why?

Postby FLAOFEI » 27 Oct 2013 06:55

I lived in Australia from age 2 to 6, and I got a lot of fond memories of that place. Amongst other things the songs :D
---
I grew up with this version of the happy birthday song:

Happy birthday to you!
You live in a zoo!
You look like a monkey!
And you smell like one to!

---
And this version of Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree:

Kookaburra sits on the electric wire
Jumping up and down with his pants on fire
OUCH!
Kookaburra, OUCH!
Kookaburra, hot your pants must be!

---
Tie me Kangaroo down sport
Tie me kangaroo down [x2]

Tan me hide when I'm dead, Fred.
Tan me hide when I'm dead.
So he tanned his hide when he died, Clyde,
And that's him hanging on the shed!

(I know that's not all the verses, but that's my fav verse)

(^Now that's nostalgia)

It's too bad I don't remember more from when I lived in Australia :/

Spoiler Song lyrics and stuff:
---
I grew up with this version of the happy birthday song:

Happy birthday to you!
You live in a zoo!
You look like a monkey!
And you smell like one to!

---
And this version of Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree:

Kookaburra sits on the electric wire
Jumping up and down with his pants on fire
OUCH!
Kookaburra, OUCH!
Kookaburra, hot your pants must be!

Kyte- Boundaries
Hear silence choking you, listen to the world
Run away speaking true, break down in the cold

That's actually all there is to that song. There aren't very many lyrics in it.
