Chiptune

Full List

"Chiptune is a style of electronic music where all sounds are created using vintage computer or video game console sound chips. Initially the sound was popular in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s in the form of specifically 8-bit Video Game Music, for example, the Space Invaders, Super Mario Bros. and Mega Man 2 soundtracks. More recently, the term has also been used to describe music that sounds like genuine 8-bit chip music but that is created using more advanced technology, such as software emulators. This has meant the creation of chiptune has become more widespread in an underground culture of amateur composers.

Chips provide a small number of channels to work with, each creating a different sound wave. For example, the chip in the Nintendo Entertainment System has 5 channels: two pulse waves, one triangle wave, one white noise channel, and one DPCM channel which was also capable of pulse-code modulation (PCM) sound. Composers developed techniques to overcome limitations of the chips, such as using fast arpeggios to mimic chords. These all come together to provide the distinctive 'bleeps' and 'bloops' of the chiptune sound. "

Trance

"Trance is a style of electronic dance music developed in the early 1990s. The trance sound beyond this acid-era genesis is said to have been an off-shoot of techno in German clubs during the very early 1990s. Germany is often cited as a birthplace of trance culture with most music labels Frankfurt based. Early trance shared much with techno in terms of the tempo and rhythmic structures but also added more melodic overtones. These early forms of trance are now referred to as classic trance and were often more hypnotic, longer, and slower progressing then the trance that was to follow. By the end of the 90's commercialization of the sound made the tracks less hypnotic and more anthemic greatly changing the sound and increasing its popularity. Various changes and movements are part of the overall parent Trance genre and this list highlights the chronology and changes within Trance as an overall genre and community while likewise showing classic tracks of the genre.

Full List

Part 1 Classic Trance (1990-1994)

Known as the classic period of Trance, the only connecting factors were a primarily 4/4 beat; a spacey, ethereal, hypnotic atmosphere; long songs; and a slow progression of layers as tracks unfolded. The trance sound beyond this acid-era genesis is said to have been an off-shoot of techno in German clubs during the very early 1990s. Germany is often cited as a birthplace of trance culture. Trance labels like Eye Q Records, Harthouse, Rising High Records, and MFS Records were Frankfurt based.

Age of Love - "The Age of Love (The Jam & Spoon Mix)"

1990's "The Age of Love" is the (arguably) recognized first Trance track although there were a few proto-trance records before it. 1992's Jam & Spoon mix is when everyone noticed however.

"In 1992, a massive trance tune made by Bruno Sanchioni (who use to release under some of the respectable New Beat alias such as Dr. Phibes, Bazz, and Chico Crew) with Guiseppe Cherchia hit the dancefloors all over Europe, and then the World. The sensual and sweet vocals saying "Come on...dance with me, move your body..." melted with the hypnotic mellow pianos made this tune a true classic, specially in the Jam & Spoon versions 'Watch Out For Stella'. A wild growing and distorted 303 bassline is at the top of the 'Watch Out For Stella' version, perhaps the most played on the underground venues at that time."~Alain_PAtrick

Dance 2 Trance - "We Came In Peace 91 Mix" (1991)

"It's canon that this is the first official Trance track. That's arguable because there were several other obvious Trance releases in 1991 as well (The Age of Love, Cosmic Love, etc...) or even earlier (What Time Is Love (1988 Pure Trance Original). But this track is credited to have started a phenomenon that made Trance an overused (by as early as 1995) and too serious a word (to some people) by which describe the genre."~madragoran

The Visions of Shiva - "How Much Can You Take? (Physical)"(1993)

"In 1992 after Paul van Dyk's mixing style drew the attention of Cosmic Baby (who also recorded 93's Cafe' del Mar as Energy 52), the two collaborated as The Visions of Shiva, on "Perfect Day" on the renowned Berlin independent label MFS Records. In February 1993, the second and final Visions of Shiva single "How Much Can You Take?" was released and van Dyk and Cosmic went their separate musical ways.

Union Jack - "Two Full Moons & a Trout (Original Mix)" (1994)

"Originally began as a collaboration between Platipus’s legendary label boss Simon Berry and Claudio Giussani, a trance music project from England. Founded in 1993, the duo has focused on acid and tech trance and has been closely associated with the Platipus record label."~wiki "There is no denying that not only is this one of the all time trance classics, but possibly more than any other track it will silence even the most hardened trance cynic. The original is a lush journey deep into a rainforest with the sound of tribal drums and tropical animals setting the scene. This is interspersed with ethereal wailing and profound soundscapes. This builds for several minutes as it takes the listener deeper into the jungle until it all comes crashing to a halt and the most epic new age film score type break before soothing itself out."~Universe

Trance

Disc 2 - Epic, Progressive, Dream, and Balearic Trance (1995-1998)

"Starting in 1995, Trance (which had never to that point been extremely popular) began to gain worldwide attention. Part of this was due to the change in the music itself with rather larger changes in style and the beginning of the superstar dj's (producing tracks, remixing, and touring . Several particular strains were now present; Epic and Progressive trance differentiated from the then "regular" trance by more breakdowns, less acid-like sound & bass chord changes that gave the repeating lead synth a feeling of "progression". Ibiza summer vacationing by hordes of Uk adults and dj's led to Balearic / Ibiza Trance were melodic and mellow and often sampling seaside elements like seagulls and ocean waves. Finally the most commercial and least respected element called "Dream Trance" was kicked off by Robert Miles "Children" and a flood of imitators that made the sound even more gentle and detached from its techno roots.

Hightlights

Nalin & Kane - "Beachball" (1996)

"Gorgeous, elegant, and never tiring. It's quite possible that I've listened to this track more times than any other, probably my personal favorite. Built out of tribal, yet melodic beats (the "Nalin and Kane sound"), relaxing and inobtrusive vocals, and a slow, subtle build that takes its time to breakdown. When it does breakdown, air strings and seagulls wash and flow around each other as if musically taking flight to a Mediterannean sky over a sunset-golden beach. When the breakdown ends, "Beachball" slowly floats back to earth, before spending the remainder of the track rippling back and forth between the sky and the sand."~darktremor

An example of what is often called as the Ibiza Trance/ Balearic Trance (ie Chicane, Salt Tank, York) which is not vastly removed (beat-wise) from "Dream Trance" (Dj Dado, Robert Miles).

BT "Flaming June (PVD+BT Remix)"

"ESCM is stronger all around, with a more varied sense of overall rhythm dynamics than the basic build-and-release trance climaxes that were the bread and butter of Ima."~AMG

"One of the very best trance records ever made. The BT & PVD Mix was recorded in conjunction with their mix for 'Forbidden Fruit' by Paul van Dyk. The track builds with piano keys, interspersed with powerful kicks, before the pumping beats start in earnest. A prog style acid line drives it along to the well deserved breakdown, where heavenly bliss takes over."~Universe

Three Drives - "Greece 2000 (Original Mix)"

"Greece 2000 is one of the defining tracks of trance, and it will be for years to come. Anyone who ventures into the world of trance must listen to this song at least once in their lifetime, as it is a compromise between the two realms of trance music - progressive and uplifting. It's lead melody comes out like an uplifting trance track, except without supersaws and instead a unique synth and some great background pads and riffs. But in the breakdown, it still maintains melody, and in this sense it is a progressive song. One of the great trance masterpieces of our time."~Discogs

L.S.G.- Netherworld (1997)

"The best trance producer is pretty much indisputably Oliver Lieb, by far. He is consistently credited with inventing progressive trance, then popularizing it and producing one of the overall best tracks in the style (L.S.G. - "Netherworld"). He debatably created "anthem trance" in a certain form (listen to his old Paragliders tracks, especially the club anthem "Paraglide"). Under his own name, he is often credited with creating ambient trance, and later on, tech-trance (with his later L.S.G. albums). His acid trance albums under the Spicelab moniker are widely considered the very best the genre has to offer (especially the full-length 4-track albums). In fact, to this very day, his tracks and remixes are found in DJ sets."~darktremor

Disc 3 - Anthem + Progressive Trance (1998-2000)

While Trance was picking up steam in popularity in 1998 it began to peak. Trance began charting in the UK (in Europe it was already very popular) and getting global attention across the pond. Part of the reason for the success was the superstar stature of the dj's themselves who were coveting these tunes and partially due to being spotlighted in the main rooms of Britain's largest clubs (Gatecrasher, Cream, Ministry of Sound, Home). Either way from 1998-2000 Trance had a much bigger audience and sound. Tracks were less about a trancey vibe and more about creating huge uplifting anthems.

Full List

Binary Finary "1998 (Paul van Dyk Remix)"

"The original version was always a better than average tuneful high pitched trancer. However Paul van Dyk's remix is nothing short of astonishing. He quite rightly pretty much so keeps the original as is, but adds a sense of toughness that was somewhat absent from the original. The attention though is placed firmly on the massive breakdown, and its subsequent surge to euphoric heaven. This remix became the basis for countless pale imitations."~Universe

System F - "Out of the Blue(Original Mix)" (1999)

"In February 1999 Ferry Corsten's second solo project, System F, was released on the Tsunami imprint along with the album Out of the Blue, including the same-named melodic tune that became a hit on dance floors all over the world, achieving a top twenty position in the United Kingdom single chart. His growing popularity in the late 1990s led to cooperation with many famous trance DJs and musicians like Tiësto (Gouryella, Vimana), Vincent de Moor (Veracocha), and Robert Smit (Starparty)."~wiki

Bedrock - "Heaven Scent" (1999) [Single]

Along with 'Xpander' by Sasha , 'Heaven Scent' reignited interest in progressive house and inspired countless producers to make wonderful music. Don't be fooled by the progressive tag though, 'Heaven Scent' has in fact as much in common with euro trance as it does with the type of progressive house that would be championed at the Bedrock club nights. Indeed in terms of style, this record saw Digweed in particular start to move to a tougher sound compared to the epic house style he was championing in his Northern Exposure days. This is a quality euphoric anthem that is special to both progressive and trance lovers. "~Universe

In case you don't know, Bedrock is the long-running collaborative project between big-circuit DJ John Digweed and producer Nick Muir.

Delerium - "Silence (Tiësto In Search Of Sunrise Remix)" (2000)

"Nearly all the attention was given to the Tiësto remix. Vocal trance is a difficult genre in which to succeed. Many try, but nearly all fail, miserably it has to be said. Somehow or another, DJ Tiesto manages to take his 'In Search Of Sunrise Remix' to the very point of commercial unacceptability, without crossing the dreaded line."~Universe

Disc 4 - New Faces (2001-present)

After the millenium, Trance began to rescind in popularity from its over-commercialization and Top 40 charting (in the UK at least). Trance more loyal to its roots has begun to rear its head on the internet with the abundance of legal music download sites (Juno Download and Beatport) enabling enthusiasts to avoid having to track down hard to find vinyl. As a result, both commercial and progressive trance now have a much more global, if not chart-bound, presence. There was new territory to be charted in the genre called Neo-Trance, Mictotrance, or simply Minimal (which is in a seperate list). This sound departed from the traditions of the previous decade but for the most part though most of Trance continued unchanged except for new artists and dj's sharing the spotlight. 2003 and 2004 were especially standout years as the output became rather deep, progressive, and melodic, leaving overly sugary-sweet songs at a greater distance than some other years.

Full List (see the prev post)

Highlights

Solarstone - "Solar Coaster" (2002)

"Solarstone is Rich Mowatt, producer and DJ. Producing and releasing trance, progressive and chillout since 1994 under various aliases including Young Parisians, Z2 and Liquid State. As the first trance wave peaked in 1999 Solarstone left an indelible mark on the scene with the Top 40 hit ‘Seven Cities’. The track was one of the very first Balearic Trance anthems. Most popular releases to date include 'Late Summer Fields', 'Solarcoaster' and 'Rain Stars Eternal'. "~Discogs+Wiki

Whiteroom(Andy Moor And Adam White Present) - "The White Room" (2004)

"When people look back on the decade that was the 2000s, they will see that 2004 was one of the greatest of those years in trance. Among dozens of other reasons for this, The Whiteroom is one phenomenal track and has already established itself as a classic born out of that year.

To me, this track is the greatest hybrid of the stellar ambience of psytrance and the build-up/breakdown structure of progressive to date. A simple enough bassline plods along and its repetition is present enough to put you in a trance, but made subtle enough by all the other different elements that you maintain interest. Hypnotic, indistinguishable vocals, by 2004 already a legendary trademark of Andy Moor, are scattered tastefully throughout those nine, blissful minutes. Seven minutes inward, as the song's ever genuine build-up culminates to one steep climax, a much anticipated breakdown strikes and, even after the full-blown impact is delivered, the ambience is never lost, but rather grows. The vocals become intense and are backdropped by an utmost spooky melody played on the leads. I'll leave the rest to the reader's imagination. "~RoverTheOctopus

Above & Beyond - "No One On Earth (Gabriel & Dresden Remix)" (2004)

"I would almost describe this record as a sort of ballad arranged in a trance surrounding. The voice of Zoe Johnston is absolutely marvellous an full of drama. It carries the biggest part of the track and this is the proof that a strong vocal can be just as addictive as a good hookline. In another more progressive oriented side, You have the Gabriel & Dresden Vocal Mix with a remarkable repetitve slicing and especially with an awesome emotional break in the middle of the track."~Discogs

Yeah that may be the case. Someone brought up in Hands Up in a another thread and i thought the consensus was it was anthemic trance but i may remembering it wrong. If it's "Euro Trance" i honestly would need to know what would distingiuish it from other trance before i start seeing a change of styles and a name change. Trance is from Europe ANYWAY so that part is incredibly moot.

EDIT I guess its like a mix of hard house / eurodance with upper bpm's. Anyway i guess not too much crossover with trance i guess.

It could be me, but to give an example, I don't find this sounding anything like Hard House.
And that's Hands Up.

If I would have to describe it, I'd say it's Vocal Trance (because it almostly always has vocals - ironically this track doesn't though) but then happy.

Well listen to that rhythm in the song. That is very much a house groove that's going on there. Sure its got kind of a balearic thing going on but it's not really a trance beat style going on. It's much closer to electro house and eurodance and much further from trance. If that's hands up that's fine but its still not trance is what i'm saying or in that family. If you're asking me if i have a Hands Up list or a good chronology i don't and i don't think anyone does quite yet.

Yeeeeek Not sure i want to if most is like this

I do know that I'm in love with track #4 <3
I make Hands Up myself, so I don't really understand your last question.

Eh.

Can you do a piece about Bassline/Bassline House/Jackin' House/UK Bass?

Honestly man most of the RYM Box Set are written about well recognized genres that are covered by either fans, dj's, music lovers, magazine writers, etc. I can do something like Bassline or Uk funky which i have sets for and was pretty big at the time (briefly), but a lot of the stuff you're asking for is rather new genres or subgenres of subgenres and most haven't been well covered by those groups of people. They box set project is sort of a time capsule of how most of those genres have split off, who the essential artists are, and what those great tracks are. Something like hands up with that youtube clip can show the style but tell me nothing about the history or essential artists or chronology. Those i won't have sets for because i'd need someone who's enthusiastic and knowledgeable about that music to actually write them up. That's not me tbh and i haven't had any volunteers. If that changes i can get those sets added to the project.

Until then i can just cover what's part of the box set already and that's literally easily over more than half a thousand genres to choose from.

Bassline is a type of music related to UK Garage that in many ways is a second wave of Speed Garage (which became briefly popular in the late 90's). It has been argued that grime and dubstep originated from "an over-reaction - to the 'feminine pressure' of late-'90s 2-Step. While dubstep and grime have a predominantly male audience, bassline bridges the gap between these 2 subgenres of Uk Garage and 2-Step (but containing 4x4 basslines). BPM's are faster than 90's speed garage and the basslines are much larger (which is the biggest influence of dubstep on it). The style originated in Sheffield around 2002 in the Niche Nightclub, which was eventually closed down in late 2005. The sound eventually broke country wide in 2007 as a definable sound.

UK Funky is a genre of electronic dance music from the United Kingdom that is heavily influenced by broken beat, tribal house, soca music, electro house, and afrobeat, and UK + US Garage. It is a part of house music (although it has dropped the House in the title overall) but many insist it is still part of the house scene even with some wanting it to be called simply UK House. It contains a healthy club scene partly due to the perceived decline in the Bassline scene and thanks in part to DJ Marcus Nasty who in many ways championed the sound first. It has evolved to include modern r&b elements (often through often viewed videos rather than massive airplay), grime and skank mc'ing, as well as the soulful elements which existed in the beginning of the genre.
