General EDM/IDM Disscussion

Postby Ricky Denzel » 12 Sep 2014 06:25

I found it pointless to talk about EDM/IDM sub-genres in separate threads. So I've decides to combine all the sub-genres into one thread. Hopefully, this is a good idea. If you feel like this isn't necessary, feel free to lock or delete it.
-Ricky

PS: ALL EDM sub-genres are welcome, INCLUDING IDM (Industrial Dance Music). So no pointless asking questions about "Is hardcore talk allowed" or "can we talk about trap." All of it is allowed.

IDM stands for "intelligent dance music". I think you're referring to IBM, which stands for "industrial body music". :)

Is it just me, or do you think there are too many people who complain about how most of the fandom music is EDM?
In general, just forget genres, it's all music. Listen to whatever sounds good, don't restrict youself from listening to great songs just because they're classified under a certain genre. :)

(I don't mean to start an arguement, but I just had to get that off my chest :P)

It seems like it's mostly pop vocal music which gets the attention though, sure there's a lot of smaller edm musicians but most of the bigger people seems to be pop oriented, there actually seems to be a lack of "good" edm music imo (except for maybe house).
I'm not a very good looker though.

NullPointException: generality doesn't apply to situation.

People are bothered that the fandom music scene can tend to be too monolithic, which I think is a valid critism. It represents a lack of diversity among both the creators and consumers of pony music, as a whole, which sometimes means that good music of other genres is overshadowed by significantly worse EDM simple because it's in a genre that the majority of fandom listeners are already most familiar and comfortable with. In other words, it creates an echo chamber of sorts.

In general, I agree with the sentiment that specific genres are too much focused on and aren't all that important or useful most of the time, but in this case I think the complaints are reasonable.

Okay, now I know. Thanks guys.

Now, what's the deal with jungle terror. It's basically like big room house. There's no need to make it a different sub-genre. Like dubstep and glitch hop. Almost basically the same thing.

But glitch hop and dubstep are very very different genres =\

Never heard of that "jungle-terror" stuff though.

Glitch hop is dubstep slowed down and a bit glitchy. That's my opinion.

A genre is a certain sound in a certain way, but a certain sound in a certain way isn't necessarily a known or yet-defined genre. Not the other way around.

Stuntdude, lemme be frank. You're not very good at 'discussion'.

See, Ricky says something, maybe it is slightly incorrect but that doesn't matter. What should you do? Well, glitch hop does have some dubsteppy elements, the sound design especially, and hey, it's glitchy. That's 2 things he's right about, but you only focused on him being slightly incorrect and as a result pretty much killed any discussion that could have happened as a result of what ricky was putting out. Not only that but you made him feel like an ass, so you kill a discussion in it's tracks and make someone feel like an ass. Not really contusive to discussion methinks

Whether or not one genre is a subset of another is typically not a matter of opinion, it's a factual claim. That's what I was pointing out. I'd apologize for being blunt, but I'm not actually sorry.

Can we please get back to talking about EDM? I don't want this to turn into a whole "I'm right, you're wrong" battle.

I checked out one of them, it was neat but it didn't really get me all that interested. I actually haven't listened to any Aphex Twin, I should probably go do that at some point

Oh lordy.

Aphex Twin is one of the biggest names in who helped create the IDM scene. He was very prolific early on, very diverse in what he did, went by the beat of his own drum (or in the case of SAW II the lack of), and often injected some quirky humor into his work and life. He used a ton of pseudonyms when he started (, AFX, Blue Calx, Caustic Window, The Dice Man, Gak, Polygon Window) so there's a load of ep's and singles out there that he technically made although it's his albums under the name Aphex Twin from 1992-2001 that he's known for. He's taken over a decade off since Drukqs but put out a new album this year.

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/finulanu ... _just_now/

https://rateyourmusic.com/list/FatherMc ... ms_ranked/

First album is solid ambient techno, SAW II is staright forward ambient, dark ambient. From there he goes into a lot more diverse and non ambient areas including stuff like drill & bass (early breakcore). A well known musician that's often overlooked as it wasn't really popular music. At least know and see the videos for Come to Daddy and Windowlicker as they are the closest thing to his "hits" and are also amazing videos.

I think "Windowlicker" was the first YouTube video I ever watched, honestly, way back when. Aphex Twin is a huge influence on the electronic music community, and the music community in general: Skrillex has cited "Flim" as his favourite song, Kanye West sampled "Avril 14th" for his song "Blame Game", "Windowlicker" was apparently a major measuring point for Daft Punk's album Human After All, and it's no doubt that Radiohead's evolution circa Kid A was at least in some part influenced by his sound. He's an essential artist to go to for any EDM/IDM discussion, so I highly suggest you check him out, Ricky/Rod/Whatever you go by now! Along with the songs I mentioned, my personal favourite is "Girl/Boy Song", although "Milkman" is pretty mint for the lyricism alone, and "Bucephalus Bouncing Ball" is perhaps the most mathematically beautiful song you'll ever hear (you'll understand when you hear it lol)

One of the most popular electronic musicians and also one of the best IDM/braindance musicians. Also contributed to the ambient techno genre with his first album.

I really want Knife Party's "Abandon Ship" EP so bad. One of the songs was already leaked from the album and it is already sounds promising.
