And then a few topics below this one, Senntenn did a post about his friend's channel "knobs" that reviews free synths.

Are they any particular kinds you're looking for? That'd help narrow it down.

Off the top of my head, here are some places that offer free stuff:
http://cinesamples.com/retail/ (scroll all the way to the bottom)
http://www.wavesfactory.com/
http://embertone.com/

Seconded. KVR has some awesome free stuff to choose from. Back in the day I particularly liked a synth called String Theory that I found there. I still go there if I want to find some new effects.

Tone2 FireBird 2 is an absolute tank of a free synth. Synth1, Zebralette and T-Force Alpha+ are also pretty good.

I just came across this really great VSTi sampler that does one thing and one thing only. Slice up the Amen Break. And it does it insanely well.

Check it out

Use an actual sampler instead. Why is this a thing?

Workflow, lower CPU usage than most other samplers, built-in effects. It's not a necessary thing that you have to own but it's good to just have it.

Also it's a 7 meg download and there's literally nothing wrong with it so why not?

It's actually a pretty neat idea. Given the Amen's status in the dance world as a veritable instrument in and of itself, this just makes it more accessible.

the drums in it play like only half of the time you playback your project and nothing under d3 work. I would say thats at least something wrong with it.

Id still say using a sampler and getting aquainted with that would be a million times better option, but I guess its a thing that "works". Soundgoodizer also '"works".
