Recording without a computer

Postby senntenial » 17 Mar 2014 11:26

I actually have a bit of a problem - I have some condenser mics with an audio interface. I wanna record stuff, but I don't have a laptop anymore.

I wanna buy something that will allow me to just plug in my mic and record onto, like a fancy hard drive. What are these called? I went through a multitude of Google searches and I could figure out the name....
Also put here for future reference, anyways.

Field recorders and multitrack recorders can do that. Perhaps you're thinking of those.

Multitrack recorders look like what I'm going for - I only wish they came without all those fancy knobs and buttons. Maybe if I hook up a raspberry pi to a harddrive....

I've heard about raspberry pi before, but I have no idea what it is. From what I've seen it looks like a mini motherboard with a built in processor, graphics and other ports. Somebody want to correct me?

Actually, it's a full computer. Very tiny though - but it's very fun for experimentation (and hard to beat at $35).

Only big things that differ it from our nice computers is that it runs Linux (Arm7[?], so no Ubuntu), has GPIO pins for doin shit w/ transistors (still gotta figure that out), it only has a 1ghz processor (after overclocking), and it's run on an SD card (though I've moved all my filesystems to a USB so it doesn't corrupt).

Still, totally awesome for little projects. Currently have mine working as a local webserver, but there's a lot of fun uses for them that I have yet to try out. Maybe I should buy another....

That actually sounds awesome as hell. Perhaps I'll get one some day. Although I don't know what I'd use it for, haha.

If you're looking for a very low cost, although not greatest quality, you could get a tape recorder/mixer like one of the Fostex multitrackers. I used an X26 for recording without my computer and it worked quite well, especially considering you can pick one up on eBay for $50 or so.
I'd like to apologize for all the absolutely stupid threads I've made in 2013/2014.
