Sharing Via Dropbox

Postby Injustrial » 17 Feb 2014 18:34

Hey, I've noticed that some of you link to a Dropbox file and I get a black window with a player, while other times I have to download the file to listen to it. I find the "Black background player" to be a lot more easy for on-the-fly listening and was wondering why there's a difference.

Anyone able to answer this in a simple way for me?

If you're using the downloaded version of Dropbox that's basically just a directory (as opposed to uploading through the browser), you should have a Public folder. Anything you put in that folder, you can Right Click -> Copy Public Link which gives you a share link to an in-browser player.

Although more recent versions of dropbox don't have that folder. Replacing www.dropbox with dl.dropbox does the trick though.

Really? Huh. Did not know that. That's kinda lame.

In that case, I wonder if it would work if you just created a folder called "Public"?

Weird that new dropboxes don't have the public folder. Anyway, as Pyre said you can change the url. There should be a button somewhere that copies a link to the player though.

Personally I still prefer soundcloud for sharing stuff on here simply because you can embed and play it without following a link.

Ah, so changing the URL or using the "Public" folder does the job? Thanks, I'll see about that the next time around

(Sometimes, I'm keeping stuff a bit under wraps before posting to soundcloud, so that's my reason for wanting this feature)

Thanks for the help, guys!

Nah, I did try but it didn't work. Ah well, changing the URL is easy enough

I like dropbox because it's more private, and I can post wips that I dont want to release to the public yet. I dont think soundcloud has a link only feature.

Soundcloud does allow you to upload tracks privately, giving you a private link and all that. I'm not sure if you can embed private sounds though.

And Dropbox is better for things like Skype chats where you can't embed anyway. The browser player is a bit less clunky than Soundcloud, imo.

Always worked for me. I usually use Opera but I've been using Chrome today without issue too. It's usually something stupid like you need to update flash.

It's not even really "their site". The browser player you see is just how your particular browser interprets a direct link to a sound file. Chrome's is different from Firefox's is different from whatever. IE doesn't even have one.

So try a different browser, or Google the problem, because it's on your end.
