Granular Synthesis. How does it work?

So...I'm curious about Granular Synthesis. Like, I know the basic idea behind it in that it's sample based and works off sound grains, but I don't know the how or why of it. I'm also thinking of trying it some day, but I have this condition called 'flat-ass-broke' so I wanna check out something free first.

Last question, does FL have anything Granular capable as standard?

LMMS's Audio File Processor has basic granular synthesis...

But it might set your computer on fire, so be careful

Seamless just made a short video on the Granulizer. He's got a bit of a speech impediment, but is very knowledgeable. You should definitely check out his stuff if you want a quick overview over the native plugins in FL Studio
