Side lags behind Mid

Postby cplbradley » 03 Sep 2013 16:28

So on my master, I've noticed after soloing the side that the side on some synths tend to lag behind the percussion. Here's what I mean:

Notice how the side lags behind on some instruments, but not on the others?
I can't figure out why it's doing this.

I'm using Massive for the synths, Samples for the percussion, and Ozone 5 for mastering.
Can anyone help?

Are you talking about how it sounds like somebody recorded that playing through some speakers with a microphone? Because it really sounds like... Waaaay off into the distance in the mix. The snare and I think the kick have almost no low end either.

Also, please be more specific. "after soloing the side that the side on some synths tend to lag behind the percussion" doesn't make any sense to me. Did you pan it all to the left? Sum it all up into mono? And then when you did this action, did the synths sorta drop out of the rhythm a bit, causing percussion to sound like it was misplaced and not quite hitting on the beats it was supposed to?

the kick and snare are mono. the percussion is on beat, but the synths fall behind. what you're listening to is just the sides, not the mono.

So you solo'd the stereo, muting the mono so that anything that is panned can be heard, but not anything that is centered? I've never heard of that. I must be really confused right now.

But if that is the case, it may be because your bass is centered, so what you're hearing is any effect that is panned or widened on the basses insert on the mixer. That may have some delay attached to it, making it sound somewhat out of beat.

Mid - Side in this case refers to the phasing in the track. The mid signal is the part of the waveform that is identical to both tracks (left and right tracks) at the same time. The side is the part of the waveform that is different from the both tracks (left and right).

Its not about whats panned where although that may possibly be part of the problem.

Now OP, what is it that's creating the 'side' signal? Is it reverb/delay effect?
Also make a copy with the just the mid signal and another as a whole, I might get a better understanding if I hear it those ways.

The side is created by multiple voices spread apart

I've noticed this too when Mid-Side mixing with vocals.

But have just worked around it before. What causes this?

See my above post, it's the difference between the left audio channel and the right audio channel.

Left side + right side = the 'mid' signal (essentially summed to mono)

Left side - right side = the 'side' signal (subtracting it either way (L-R or R-L) creates the difference, everything but the center signal)
