The Reese Bass Thread

Postby Ocular » 28 Aug 2013 09:02

k since the old one is getting deleted soon I'm making a new thread (unless a mod wants to rescue it) so here goes

I made this yesterday. It was fun. I originally tried to model it after Diplodocus by Noisia.

https://soundcloud.com/theocularinvisible/reese-bass

Frequency shifting, camelcrusher, 2 instances of wow filter, a low pass filter, vocoder, another EQ, and a phaser. Then resampled and added some reverb.

The main sound was made in BeepMap with a WMill wallpaper, played at C2 :P

Sounds okay. I think u could add some additional distortion for dirt, but it's very easy to get 'overdistorted' and undefined sound. Also, wow filter is a pretty expensive plugin, and u could easily make vowel effects with only phasers. And applying reverb on the final sound isn't really necessary, because u could do that on the mixing stage, while making your cool neurofunk song.

I didn't use WOW filter for vowels, I used it for bandreject filters and some light distortion. This is supposed to be a cleaner reese.
I also didn't put reverb on the final sound, I left it dry for resembling. This is just the bass without the drums, which I already made.

Some sick stuff you got going on there! :grin: I want to hear a full song with that bass.

I make Neuro every now and again but I'm not so good at it. I used IL Sytrus for my source reese. It's literally 2 saw waves detuned by a pitch ratio around .0200 .0500. I resample using harmor because I'm lazy and massive effects chains to me are unnecessary. The effects I use when I resynthesize the audio in harmor are usually unison, prism, distortion, compression, phasers, and very occasionally chorus. I also resynthesize the audio into harmor on both sides A and B so I can have two reeses at the same time and I can blend between the two to get more of a unison effect. After I repeat this process about 2 or 3 times I just export it, frequency split, reverb the high end and add filters. Like I said I'm not that good at Neuro so this lil diddy will have vengeance atmospheres, a sampled break and other atrocities but the bassline is pretty twisted.

@Trixiee that sounds really sick! I love Harmor as well :3

I made this little thing whilst messing around today. I did it in Massive this time and it's not even resampled (2lazy4u).
I made the original patch and routed the lows, mids and highs to their own bus. I added a little bit of reverb to the mids on a send channel, and then each frequency is routed to a Bass Output, which is linked to the master. I added chorus, distortion, flanger and did various EQing to change the sound to my taste. I also added a lowpass filter for some modulation and a highpass filter to give it some movement as it continues.

@Propeller
Dude that's pretty sick for not even resampling. I personally think you should have added a band reject filter instead of a high pass to give it a little vowel movement but not as much as a band pass. Resampling this bass through harmor would get it unbelievably twisted especially if you added phasers. The base reese you have here is really good own but light resampling wouldn't hurt :p Finish the song while the idea is still fresh in your head ;)
