Help Mixing Orchestral [Urgent]

Postby Conduit » 11 Aug 2013 17:37

I'm leaving on a road trip tomorrow, so today is really my last day to finish this.

I've been working on an orchestral track for a friend, and I've finished all the composition, but I have no idea how to properly mix it. For my past tracks I've normally just thrown a slight compressor on the master and called it a day. I've done a whole bunch of level balancing and whatnot so far, I just haven't put an EQ or compressor on any tracks. I've also already fixed a few of the volume issues.

Anyway, so my question is how should orchestral be mixed? Should I put a compressor on each individual track, or leave them with their current dynamics? Is it necessary to EQ, even though the instruments are selected to work together? Are there any other things I'm forgetting, or tips that would help?

Heres the track for reference (I put a limiter on the master, so that it would be at a reasonable listening volume):

You need to make sure that the bass is centered so it sounds good on subwoofers. What tends to happen is the cellos and basses are put on the right and all the bass is then panned. TP Bassline is a good VST for your master channel and is an immediate fix for that problem.

Another thing is to not compress your instruments much besides just to volume boost. up to industry standard volumes. If your track sounds similar to the dynamics and volume of a beautiful Zimmer or Jablonsky piece, you've done it correctly.

It is better to have a quiet instrument than a muddy mix... always. Sometimes that means adding extra EQs to your individual instruments to make them shine only their sweet frequencies. It's mostly trial and error, but once you come up with a method that works for you- it will stick with you for the rest of your untrained mixing and mastering life, and it will sound very nice to most anybody.

Thanks!

Unfortunately it looks like TP Basslane is only for pc, so I guess I'll settle for just centring the cellos. The not compressing beyond raising volume is pretty much what I assumed was right, but its good to have some confirmation. Time to go play around with some EQ!
