Welcome to my life... XD

No one here is trying to copy others. A user asked a question and I was more than happy to answer it. With my help, I'm sure that user will have discovered new ways to process drums - not just with that one snare sample from the pendulum kit. Compression + EQ can be applied anywhere else.

The opportunity to educate others is something I think should be embraced, rather than turning it down and just saying "figure it out yourself."

As for any other users on this thread, if nobody else on MLR is willing to assist you in understanding certain sounds and how they're made, I am happy to help and I'll do my best to answer any questions I may know about.

I don't know much about multi-band distortion and it seems like to get anywhere close to that super filthy tone you obviously have to smash it to hell. I've tried to make it within Massive and FM8 a couple of times and I got fairly close through extremely long signal chains. I would like to see if someone has more of a clue on what they're doing to achieve a similar sound ie. general signal chains, some EQ theory behind it, maybe essential plugins?

Yeah, good luck with that. Excision has a very distinct style that is very difficult to replicate. In addition, I can guarantee you 100% that half the sounds in this song are done by Space Laces, who is an ever more difficult to replicate producer.

How to make Silva Hound using Logic built ins.
1) Open ES2.
2) Remember that ES2 sucks.
3) Close ES2.
4) Buy NI Massive, just like Silva and Skrillex uses! <3
5) ????????
6) PROFIT!

Naw but in seriousness I'll be in college again on Wednesday so I'll have a go and get back to you :]

Hmmm, isn't that just a saw wave? With maybe a little bit of distortion/drive?

What about it doesn't sound right to you? I used ES2 in Logic with a plain saw wave, filter drive, and distortion (with the distortion filter set to maximum) and the only difference I was able to hear was that there was more high end at about 10kHz in the song, but I attributed that to how it might have been mastered/EQ'd. I also tried a PWM square wave and it didn't sound as close as a saw.

owl city seems to use very simple sounds. I didn't obsess with the sound, but it's quite similar at least.

I really want to make a sound like the synth in this song that starts at 4:30 or so. I have tried for ages in Harmless (only automation synth I own) and can't even think of how to do it.

Any pointers would be great, in either Harmless or Synth1.

I played around with the patch and replaced the lowpass filter with a bandreject filter. imo the sound got a little closer when there was a wider bandwidth and the resonance was closer to half way, but it gives the synth just that little taste of the high frequencies that help give it that 'crisp' sound.

oooh, I might like that better.

for Harmless:

You could probably get better sound out of Harmless than I did if you did the distortion and flanger with external effects. The idea was saw, distortion, and flanger. (Admittedly it is quite a bit different than from the youtube song, but maybe it can help with direction.)

I put a pluck sound in the zip for no reason. (pitch down and turn off pluck for neurobass)

I can't seem to make the very first synth. I've tried square pads, square pads with EQ and filtering and such, saw waves, and I can't figure it out.
It's likely to have been made in Massive, Sytrus or Synth1 because I'm fairly sure it's a Glaze synth and that's what he uses.

Cheers :D

So I have some basslines and synth loops in some of my sample packs. Does anyone know how I can recreate them in Sytrus with the sound files?

By learning FM synthesis, and then building basses that are similar. That's really the only way.

Actually, from what I'm hearing, it either might be a single sample (in which case have fun sorting through the ocean of samples), or two.

The first snare/clap is pretty normal, but its pitched down by a semi-tone, and comes in slightly before the beat. The second is actually a snap sample and is pitched to the song. Thats whats giving it that really snappy sound.

I'm probably wrong, but could you just use some dj software, and scratch a sample of a bass line?

OH MAN. I was fooling around in Massive just yesterday trying to figure this out. That is a super cool sound and pretty unique I must admit.

It does not sound like a scratch sound. To me it sounds like crazily pitch-modulated detuned saws. I failed at recreating this sound so anything beyond that, I have no idea. They may not even be saws, considering there are so many other waveforms in Massive to choose from. But yeah, it's not a scratch sample.
