The woody kick sound can be made from nearly any kick by EQing out the lower frequencies. Just take a high-pass filter and put the cut-off at around 200Hz to leave only the upper harmonics and mids. As this will get rid of most of the kicks power, you'll need to compress the sample (I see you use FL studio; open the limiter, switch to Compression mode, lower the threshold so the line is about in the middle of the sample peak, then adjust the ratio to about 4:1 and raise the gain until the loudness is about where it was before processing)

Thank you, man! Quick question: Could you use the same technique to make kind of a fluttery laser sound? They did that in the video too. I haven't tried harmor before, but I'll give it a shot in this case, Thanks again!

Its the same basic principle. In this case you'll still want the pitch bend, but it goes on for a little longer, and the filter looks more like this:
Image

Then to get the fluttery sound you'll want to right click the Cutoff and select "Edit in articulator" and set it to an LFO, and adjust the speed to taste:

Okay so honestly for the longest time I've been wondering how this sound is made and I understand that Joel has access to a multitude of hardware synths and effects and whatnot but there must be some way to get close to this sound.... The sound I'm talking about is that slow rolling pluck that you hear in the intro of the song https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R_uwZZB5Yv0&feature=kp I'd love to know how to do this because I just love this song so much.

It's strummy, so the direction I went was to try to synthesize plucks in rapid succession.

Here's a preset. I didn't obsess over getting it to sound just like Fn Pig, but hopefully it'll help.
http://www.mediafire.com/download/3232q1y74nzt7b8/PL_Rollypolly.nmsv

If you use this, I recommend automating the "decay" macro and an external lowpass filter to get the evolving sound similar to the one in Fn Pig.

I'd imagine better results could probably be gotten if the plucks were not programmed into the synth patch but rather in the midi piano roll or whatever.

if you have NI Massive:
https://www.mediafire.com/?8w8yp6pg4i9j71p

Basically a supersaw with a low pass filter at about 800 hrtz with a little EQ peak at about 1900 hrtz, long attack and long release on the volume envelope, and some reverb.

How do I get the sort of vox synth at around 3:35 in this song? I'm not looking for the portamento or delay or whatever, just the sound because I feel like it'd make great drone-ish work

In massive:
-Any waveform
-Bend -/+
-Filter 1: Pick a filter for vocal sounds
-Pass your vocal filter through filter 2
-Set perimeters for vocal sounds, map to a macro.
-Filter 2: Lowpass for pulsing

That'd be the way I'd go about it anyway.

Could be ring modulation, could be vibrato at the most ridiculous speed. Either way it's a rad sound and I'm going to have a go at recreating it later.

Pretty simple. Set oscillator to PWM. Set a slow lfo on the pulse width. For the harsh sound, set a super fast lfo on the pitch. Modulate the depth of the lfo to your liking. Sounds like there is a bit of glide set on the synth, too.

OK, so I've already looked into how Omnipony's bass growls are done, but I'd like to know how to make these "whine" sounds from Run, specifically the ones at 28 seconds and at 50 seconds in:

The synthy sound in Flight at Dusk from this page.

The more you can tell me how they created it, the better. It's probably really simple but hey I'm still a noob to synths.

EDIT: Link stopped working for whatever reason. Fixed it.

You mean that oscillating, helicopter-y sound at the beginning and end? I don't hear a lot in the way of synths in that piece.

I used a sound like that at the beginning of this piece. I'll list its primary constituents:
1. Saw wave played in low register
2. FM: frequency=24.8%, depth=31%
3. LP and BP filter in parallel: BP cutoff offset a smidge over 100Hz and the LP cutoff offset a smidge under 100Hz. 0 resonance.
4. LFO modulates both cutoffs: depth=5-10%
5. There's a flanger in there with settings I don't know enough about to be comfortable reporting. (Mixed at 25%, though.)

My particular synth had other settings that I don't want to bore you with, but the above should get you close.

Guys this might sound oddly specific, but the three notes before the drop at 1:00

It sounds like a distorted triangle wave but there's no harshness associated with distortion...
