Open up a synth (I use Sytrus), and mess with the ADSR until you have a 'kick'. Make sure you're using a square or saw (or a mixture) for 'buzz'. Make an effects chain alternating between EQ and dist (starting with EQ) and mess around until you achieve desired result.

Been trying and failing to recreate the bass that starts at ~0:56. I can't get the 'ripping' sound behind it, and I can't seem to automate it to get the 'wubs' the same way.

Any ideas? :3

@pyr3

It sounds resampled, especially with the part where they utilise volume automation. You could try a setting up 2 saw waves with some slight phase detuning, and resampling that, but I'm probably wrong.

This guy.

i'm guessing the 1st osc lead is a formant saw or a triangle wave, but I can't figure out the rest.

There are many sounds I would like to be able to replicate from this, but the main one is the bass. I have no idea how to bass.

It starts at around 0:26

Mad tunes on my channel yo.

It would help to know what synths you're using or at least what daw you have, by the way.

For plucks in general: Set your synth to sawtooths and put multiple voices of about 5 or more per oscillator, and increase the unison detune (or pitch cutoff) value until it sounds the way you like it; I usually go no further than 15 cents of unison detune. Then modulate the lowpass cutoff filter with a very short envelope so that the filter quickly sweeps down from the high end to the low end on each "pluck" that is played. You can also adjust the volume envelope in your synth to a very fast attack and a short decay with no sustain; that usually works pretty well.

For these plucks right here in this song, it sounds like pulse width (PWM) square waves instead of saws, and there seems to be less unison detune and voices than in other plucks I've heard.

What do you guys think?

If you don't feel like sampling these sirens, go in massive and make a basic supersaw with multiple unison voices and increase the pitch cutoff value until satisfied. Then modulate the pitch of the oscillators with a slow-moving LFO, slow ATTACK/DECAY envelope, or perhaps the Stepper with glide turned on. Or you could just make a midi sequence and increase the glide TIME in the OSC section of Massive. Also I encourage you to try other waveforms other than sawtooth to see which one you like best.

I've been wanting to make drums like in the video below for a freaking eternity, the real scratchy, phasing ones.

Actually, this song has a lot of what I want to make in it. I just suck horribly with synth.

Too much posting "how do I make this sound?" and not enough "this is how you make this sound..." on this thread.

I sounds like those drums might just be processed samples, so you might not need to make them in a synth. I hear some heavy clip distortion and then a filter on the drums that is cutting out most of the high end while leaving most of the mids intact. Other than that it's pretty hard to tell because the drums are mixed very quietly instead of loud in the mix, plus there's just so much stuff happening in the song which makes it pretty hard to hear the drums. So basically lots of clip distortion, on an acoustic snare for example (like 30dB of input or more), reduced volume (to compensate for the loudness from distortion) and then put a high-cut filter at around... 760Hz or so. Put resonance (or a peak) on this filter too, and then sweep it up slowly with each snare hit, and you should get pretty close!

I'm looking for some drum samples like Pendulum or TLT but I can't find a thread on here about it. Is there a sample pack I can download somewhere?

Those snares are very much layered, and quite often heavily processed. The trick is to find (or make), say, a snare with a similar high end to the one you want. Then mids, then lows. EQ each to only have the frequency range you need, then layer and process each part.

No. You're going to have to try actually working for it rather than having it handed to you on a silver platter for you to sample like some sort of fancy cheese.

Yes there are. The Living Tombstone is famous for using the Pendulum Drum Kit drum samples, especially the pendulum snare. I don't know where the link is on MLR, but surely you can find them somewhere on here, like I did a long time ago.

I wanna learn more about how to make basslines similar to some of Excision's work. I don't know much about multi-band distortion and it seems like to get anywhere close to that super filthy tone you obviously have to smash it to hell. I've tried to make it within Massive and FM8 a couple of times and I got fairly close through extremely long signal chains. I would like to see if someone has more of a clue on what they're doing to achieve a similar sound ie. general signal chains, some EQ theory behind it, maybe essential plugins?

He heavily processes those. I have that kit and found the sample he uses for every song's snare and it only sounds a little like the one in the songs. He processes it a lot and possibly layers it, so Electric Velocity might still have to do some work.

Actually no. It's just heavy compression and then EQ to boost the low mids. That's really it.

Fuck it, I'm done trying to persuade people to do some work on their own instead of copying others.
