"I see you got Massive.
Try to mess around the woody wavetable (wt position all the way to the left) and full bend + at -24 semitones with some waveshaper insert and portamento.

RM works nice on this sound and you can also try a LP filter (daft is cool)."

Thanks I'll have to give that a try this weekend!

That's basically just a deep house pluck: take a saw or a square wave, add another one 12 semitones lower if you want to add some bass like in this video, put them through a LP filter with no resonance and put an envelop on the cutoff from 0 to halfway with an immediate attack and a short decay with no (or just a bit) of sustain.

Add delay and reverb and you're done.

In this video the guy has layered it with a distorted yaya bass though. If you also want this one you can get it with some LFO'd LP cutoff and a bit crusher/sample and hold effect.

intro synth. i know it's something super simple, square with an envelope on a low pass? i just wanna be sure. i can't really test it atm.

Sounds woodwindish, so might try triangles as well. Not an instantaneous attack. Fairly quick decay.

Oh whoops. I did this like a week ago lmao. I tried it the morning after, but I never would have thought of using triangles too. Thanks!

I've got a really tricky one here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m5PVf94CvmE

The chords in the verse.

I don't know if that's the one you're talking about, but to me the chords in the verse really sound like detuned square waves, one turned -12 semitones EQ'd pretty tight.
You can add some distortion, a top saw/square/pulse at +12 semitones (+detune) to add brightness, a low pass too cut some highs.

Wow, thank you, Kyoga! You're too kind! Ambience is one of my favorite types of music, and it's really cool to recognize interesting sound design like that in your music. I've also been reading your Cloud Synthesis Guide and it's been a hefty read but very interesting nonetheless.

People don't want to know how others make sounds so they can copy them. People want to know how other people made certain sounds because they think the sound is cool and can't quite figure it out themselves, and they're either just curious or are interested in using a similar sound (hopefully they make sufficient changes to it though, especially if it's a signature sound).

Get it?

It definitely sounds like an FM wub to me, so try fooling around in Sytrus or FM8 to make something really squelchy. (SeamlessR on YouTube has a video called How To Bass 36 that covers that pretty well in Sytrus) To get the roughness to it, add a ton of overdrive or something. Whenever I make basses like that I usually just take an electro bass, automate the filter cutoff and then add really heavy guitar distortion afterwards; the result is deeper and crunchier though.

So, anyone have any idea about how to make this bass? (0:28)

I know Pinkie Cake recreated it pretty well on Tumblr but that was ages ago.

Rack Extensions aren't like VSTs and AUs. Most VSTs do not have Rack Extension counterparts and vice versa; I don't think Etch Red (a fucking awesome filter RE) has a VST counterpart.

Basically, there is no RE form of Massive.

OK I have a similar patch right here Bradley

SCREENSHOT:

Also, add about 5-7 voices and move the pan position almost all the way left to add some width to it. And that Daft filter is entirely optional, it just removes some of the lower frequencies if you want to add a sub, and make the sound a bit cleaner

@propellerescape

Isn't the daft filter basically a LP? How does that free up room for a sub? I don't know too much about massives filters so correct me if I'm wrong.

I probably coulda worded myself better. It does remove some of the lingering low end in the sound if you have the filter changing from closed to open during the modulation, which is because it makes the 'roar' a bit more snappy. A slight addition of said filter makes a minimal change in the sound, but I have noticed it frees up a little bit more low end for a sub (this is without EQ btw)
I'm not that well versed into how everything inside Massive does it's job, so forgive me if I confused you :3

Yes, I have seen his masterclass on this very track. Still, I am curious how other people would begin to go about creating this sound.

Read this thread: http://mylittleremix.com/viewtopic.php?f=13&t=5945
Lavender got pretty close. However Alex S said it wasn't right.

But, in my opinion, Massive is Massive and you'll find hundreds different way to create those kind of patches.
For Ultimate Sweetie Belle's bass just mess around with Bend+/-, Phase Mod, Waveshaper Inserts, Bandreject and Notch (maybe scream) Filters.
Or you can try some fancy EQing or even highpass with resonance plus waveshapers.

I can think of a lot of ways to achieve those kind of sound in massive.

Depends on whether or not you phase them adequately as to avoid having hard peaks in the phasing. most Synthesizers will start them off-phase anyways as to avoid that.
