Old time radio effect

Postby JSynth » 29 Apr 2013 07:58

Does anyone know how to simulate an old radio?

I can tell that there is some EQ that will need to be done, but I would like to know how to add that crisp, low-quality noise to it.

Sounds like just precise EQing with some slight noise to me.

I can't listen right now, but try the EQ and a tape simulator.

Usually you just add an EQ that is focused more on the center frequencies with two narrow peaks along with some light white noise in the back. If you want to give it a slightly harsher radio feeling, put it through a very gentle overdrive, and you should be good.
DAW: FL Studio 10, Ableton Live 8
Main VSTs: Harmor, Toxic Biohazard, FM8, Sylenth1, Nexus, Sytrus.

there's eq preset settings in fl studio that are telephone and radio. Have you tried those if you use that DAW. A good starting point.

Or if you're just lazy you could always try Speakerpone or Izotope Vinyl.

There's also an EQ thing in Audacity that has a preset for an old time radio effect

And if you really, really want that old sound then you should get an old radio, play your song/sound through its speakers and record it back into a DAW with a microphone.

^^ was going to suggest that. nothin' like the real thing.

There's some interesting results that occur from FM multiplexing. I won't try to explain them or theorise on how to emulate them (sorry, due to complexity and missing parts of my own knowledge).
Look for an emulator or run it though an old radio.

--> notice the distortion every few seconds.
--> noise is very distinct... run though a random amp LFO?

remember that the type of distortion is analoge, so bit reduction and resampling aren't the right sort of FX. Obvious, I know, just thought I'd say ^^

Just use an eq, cut off high and low end, distort a very small amount, compress, add clicking samples and voila. radio voice.

or alternatively load into audacity and change project rate from 44100 hz to 16000 or 11025 hz.

Record with a terrible old microphone. Preferably from a dusty thrift shop.
