Vocal Manipulation Tips and Advice

Postby Symphon » 25 Mar 2013 20:19

So, I'm one of those people that has major trouble with voice manipulation, be it EQing correctly, glitching, or effects. They've always been difficult for me, and I know I'm not the only one that has this trouble.

There's this one effect I want specifically for a song I'm making soon. If you listen to Queen Chrysalis, she has a very interesting slight effect to her voice. Her normal voice is very noticeable, but there's some type of distortion-type-thing (I have no clue how to explain it) that is just behind it. It might be just the same voice clip with a different pitch and some very heavy chorus, but like I said, I'm bad with those types of effects. Could someone offer some advice on how to get that effect?
Here's an example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mfLQHW3_qVw

Also, if anyone else has questions on vocal manipulation, or want to give some random advice, you could place them here if you'd like.

1. Copy vocal track, keep one at normal pitch and volume
2. Lower pitch of second or lower the format of the voice with a vst (I use this free plugin)
3. Lower volume of the second voice so its noticeable but not intrusive.
4. Add whatever distortion you see necessary

Thats it in a nutshell

This thread has a lot of tips on vocal processing.

It's not exactly about the same effect, but you might find it useful anyway.

What I do to achieve a "Chrysalis-style" vocal effect is pretty much what the4thimpulse said. I'll take the original vocals and bring them into my autotune software. From there, I clone it twice and pitch one up a step or so and the other one down a step or a step and a half, and voilá! You are now King of the Changelings. I think the pitching up is what provides the sound of a little bit of distortion; the higher frequencies of the consonants pitched up even more tends to sound rather grainy, especially when the pitching-up is done in an autotune software.

Definitely play around with Vocodex if you have fl studio. A lot of ability to play with a variety of vocal effects there. Otherwise i think you've already rcvd plenty of good advice already.

This all definitely helps. Thanks a bunch! I'm almost done with the instrumental, so I think it should be done soon... Woo.
