Reaktor Discussion - Synth and Effect builders

Postby Lavender_Harmony » 20 Mar 2013 21:15

So I've been dabbling around in Reaktor for the past few days, trying to familiarize myself with things mainly, and there is an annoying amount of trial and error involved, but I'm enjoying messing around with the structure of existing instruments and adding in things that weren't there previously.

Anyone else dabble?

Everybody here is discussing awesome and expensive synths, and I'm just sitting here with Massive.

I've dabbled with Reaktor. I want to learn how to use synths I already own first before I go build something custom.

Reaktor is a good thing to learn how synths are made, though.

I haven't gotten Reaktor yet, but I have played around with the SynthMaker that comes with FL which does allow setting up various routing, setting up a GUI, etc. Usually I start from scratch, and build from the oscillators up. If nothing else, it's a lot of fun to mess around with.

haha, well, Massive is pretty good and way too expensive, but everybody seems to own it, so whatever. It's ok, and it works well. Jealous of Reaktor though.

FTFY

I know nothing about reaktor but after what kyoga said about it I am interested in learning about it and maybe getting a copy myself.

I actually once had a really powerful free digital modular synth, but I can't for the life of me remember what it was called. If I could, I'd probably have redownloaded it already.

I think it started with a K, though.

You should do what I am doing and save up for Komplete 9. Get most of the fancy, expensive synths by NI for a sick deal.

That's the one. Sucks that it's paid, now. It was a rare, high quality free synth.

I'm on about if you try and make a mono instrument stereo, it'll just die on you unless you throw AVC's everywhere until it starts working again. :\ I've got a couple ensembles I really like, but can't get them to play in stereo no matter what, I try and route everything into a mixer or stereo spreader and put it in stereo, no output. It's killed a lot of my enthusiasm xD

I LOVE reaktor, its so much fun. I basically just searched reaktor tutorials an clicked the first one and there was a whole series of them and I watched all of them and then I remade massive in reaktor.

EXCEPT

I made it so you can put whatever waveform you want on the wavetables, so you get all the wavetables!

And it has the two filters with the fader inbetween them. Idk how to make a drive tho. Or any of the special stuff Massive has. But as of right now it's pretty much massive.

I'll upload it tommorow so you guys can check it out.

Also to work in stereo you gotta get out of the instument, and hook it up to a panning thing where there's the left and right outputs. But yeah, macros are fuggin great, everything's great. So far the only thing I can't get to work are the LFO's.

For anyone who wants it, it's in here

The LFO doesn't work, so yeah. [fixed]

Also it has a The Swag Knob, a sooper sekeret skrollex effect

And I slapped prism's reverb on it. Have yet to add an on/off switch for it.

I'd like to learn how2gui tho.

Reaktor is a good thing to learn how synths are made, though.

I second that.

One thing that I'm really intrigued by is Reaktor5 FX. Sometimes I apply other effects like distortion and compression that can make the modulation of the original synth seem negligible. I would like to see if I can create a panel of effects that I can modulate so that it applies after every other effect. I really like some of the filters in Razor, I would love to use those on other synths :)

Then again, it's easier for me to use something or customize it for my own use if I created it myself. Like java script, if I use the built in widgets of Dreamweaver, it's hella annoying trying to customize it for my own site. I don't like deciphering other people's code, but if I create it myself from scratch, I understand it.

I'm sure the same would apply for synths.

Notes:

-The LFO now works

-Added more wave choices

-Better layout

-Panning controls

Currently Reaktor is on sale for $100 but I have been trying to save up for audio interface. So should I go ahead and buy Reaktor and just wait longer on the interface or should I just purchase the interface?

First off I can't believe I made an account just to reply to this one post but meh...

Anyways it really boils down to mostly 2 factors and they are monetary value and general usefulness to you.

For the first factor money, you're looking at about 75% reduction since the normal retail price on their site is $399. That's a savings of $300...$300...$300. Not to mention if you plan on getting the Komplete 9 package later on the cheaper cross-grade versions can get you another $50-$250 in savings (depending on whether you get the regular or the ultimate version). So you could potentially save up to $550 that could be dumped into other things. Like another synthesizer, midi controller, samples, etc. Not to mention this is a limited time thing compared to that audio interface's price which is probably going to stay the same forever (unless its off eBay or something).

The other major factor, its usefulness to you, depends heavily on your musical style and willingness to invest a good bit of time to learn a new synth. If your not that into sound design or don't rely that heavily on synthesizers for music its probably better to get the interface as that will be way more useful then a synth you rarely use or never get into. If you do make electronic music or really like sound design then why not take advantage of the opportunity to get an awesome synth you're probably going to get later on anyway while saving dat hard earned moniez.

Hell I haven't even started producing (I don't even have a daw :/ just a demo I practice on) and I bought it as I'll probably be getting Komplete 9 (with all the massives and fm8s and kontakts...mmm synthlicious) when I do.

In the end though its really up to you but I hope this huge ass wall of text helps.
