NI released a free synth over the holidays called Skanner. It's sample-based and it seems to be pretty optimized for dubstep production. I've gotten some pretty cool basses and soundscapes from it so far :D

I'd recommend Sugarbytes 'WOW' (not free, $99) for filtering if you're going for a dubsteppy synth - I find it really awesome to route Massive through it, specifically for vowel basses.

I'm going to go ahead and 1-up this. EXTREMELY versatile filter, the vowel filter is the best I've heard so far. Great for talking bass as well as general processing/resampling. I use it on almost every track.

I posted a download link somewhere here. They made an updated version where you can run multiple instances, but for some reason, it's not in the official website.

If you can't find it, I'll upload it when I get home tomorrow.

Skanner is really impressive, and if you have a recording plug-in like Edison, then you can use the live modulation to create some absolutely crazy sfx. It works great for those unimaginable high tone sounds and also for low bass melodies. Its unbelievably versatile.

Also, I would like to recommend Kairatune for the list. It's by far my favorite VSTi. It's great for melodies, and despite it being a primarily treble instrument, you can get a surprisingly large range from it. I recommend using it for pads, lead synths, and ambient sounds. It also has a very easy to use LFO feature, for volume and for cuts, so you can get a nice wobble.

Kairatune: http://www.futucraft.com/kairatune/
(Page has a demo of a track made using entirely Kairatune for just about every sound. Gives you a good idea of its power.)

Uh... Dude?
Skanner is free!
I was referring to the fact that I can find the serial off of NI's webpage - I just need the download.
It ain't pirating.
( NI's Serial - http://co.native-instruments.com/index. ... nerdlmacpc )
They just don't have the DL anymore.

Did you check your email? I think when I got my copy of Skanner, NI sent the download link to my email address.

They give you a serial key, but no download link. I can confirm that. I'm pretty sure there's no legitimate way to get it right now.

Yeah they sent me the serial and download link when I registered for it, although it seems now you can't even find traces of Skanner on their website.

Either they plan to sell it (likely with some added bonuses those with the free version won't get), or they scrapped it completely (for some odd reason).

I believe I remeber it being a promotional kind of event, even the software its self was not a full version and merely an extended demo. Your right I can't find any trace of it on their website, too bad.

For the sake of adding to the op a vst I am using a lot on my basslines is called CM Waveshaper, it basically raises or lowers chosen Db points on a graph which can make the harmonics come out louder then the fundemental or just added plain noise/ distortion. It really brings out basslines and strong leads.

Also I have the installer for Skannar if anyone needs it, since you need a serial key to use it anyways I doubt it'd be illegal to pass that around since it's just the installation.

Just message me on skype or send me a PM and I can pass it your way

Note you can only use the built in sound samples in the free version of Reaktor, you can still make some pretty surreal tones with it regardless though.

This was most likely said already, but the itchy synth freeware pack is nuts. There's some great lead bass synths, huge wobble synths, one... weird synth, and one HUGE EPIC AMAZING SUB SYNTH. For Vstis there's tweak bench,as said many times before, (Cairo and grumble bum to be exact) tridirt, which is great for kick drums and will DEVOUR YOUR FREQUENCIES. I might edit to add more later.

I've searched the whole thread and didn't find a hint to Lennar Digital Sylenth 1.www.lennardigital.com
It's like Access Virus in plugin shape. It's not free though.

Other than that: EastWest Quantum Leap Orchestra Free Edition. Great source for strings. Unfortunately no more available it seems...

Korg Legacy Analog Edition. Because you can never have enough virtual analog synths. ;)
