One [or more, as necessary] Sentence Music-Tip Dump

Postby Neu_KatalYst » 07 Jan 2012 06:20

IDEA...!!!!!!

i saw a thread similar to this on IDMforums, and i thought it would be a good idea to start one here, since i looked through and didn't see one (if there IS one, i apologize).

basically, the point is to attempt to post an only-ONE-sentence (using more only if you absolutely have to to get a point across) about some kind of universal DAW/music tip, regardless of genre, remix, style, etc that you have learned in your experience.

the point of a thread like this is so that, if somepony should get a writers block, or otherwise need inspiration, they can just look quickly over this thread, and read one or two sentences.

i'll go ahead and start:

-------------------------------------

MAKE PROJECT TEMPLATES consisting of plugins with presets loaded that you use the MOST - this way, your workflow isn't interrupted by making the same setup over and over again, and you can get straight to work.

While mixing, add a preferably similar mainstream song to make it easier to mix good

When you think you're finished a song, don't export it straight away; leave it alone for a few days and when you come back, you might find ways to improve it.

Quality over quantity, quantity being both length, and amount of instruments.

Always ask the opinion of other people, they might give you insight into something you otherwise wouldn't have noticed.

Properly mixing the levels of channels is more important to mastering, even the smallest change will make the whole difference in the world!

if you've been around a while, use the one song your fans like best as inspiration - what did the fans like most about it?

Write music for you. It's why people enjoy your work, because you do. As soon as you change your motivations, your music changes, and that could be a bad thing.

When EQing, try not to boost frequencies; cut the ones you don't need instead.

Also, Makkon, that's a wonderful tip/observation. c: Sometimes it's really easy to lose your focus, and you need to be reminded of what really matters.

When you're writing or mixing your music, make sure the master track won't peak any higher than -5 db. It's much easier to make tracks louder than to make them softer.

Save everything. Even if you think you won't ever make anything good out of a project, come back later. There's a high chance that you'll find a rough diamond you can apply later.

in your spare time (or inspirational down time), go through your massive library of downloaded samples, and categorize them into separate folders, so that you find what you need in SECONDS, and not minutes. for example: "kicks," "snares," "vox effects," "drum loops," "soundfonts," "pads," etc...

Try to listen to every type of music out there. If you like modern dubstep, try listening to some Mala, Coki, Burial, and whatnot. It's a great eye-opener and sometimes can inspire great ideas. Just be sure to write those ideas down if you're not near a computer 8-)
Software: Ableton Live 8.2.2, Sylenth1, NI Massive, FM8
Hardware : Macbook Pro, some altec lansing sound system, axiom 61 key midi keyboard, and a ton of power strips

Write ideas down! Whether you're listening to music on the go and notice a technique the Artist uses, or if you have a melody idea, it's good to write down things, chances are you'll forget them later.

Don't be trapped by "genre limitations." If you write dubstep, who cares if it's not 140bpm? Who cares if you write a metal song without a double bass drum?

The elitists will always critique your song according to the "rules," of the genre. Pay them no mind, for they've already limited their potential.
